First Impressions

edited November 2010 in Windows Beta
Just wanted to drop a few lines about my experiences testing current 1Password for Win Beta. I'm a current (soon former) Roboform user and was very happy to see this beta of 1Password for windows to replace Roboform on my 3 Win based Computers and 1 Mac + iPhone and iPad.

I am running 1Password 1.0.0.141 Beta on the following system:

Win7 Pro 64bit (German)

MSIE8 8.0.7600 ("32bit")

MS Security Essentials

Office Pro 2010 x64 (incl. all its browser addons)

Adobe CS4 incl. all browser addons

Windows Live Writer browser addon (part of the MS Live tools)

Issues found:

1)I seem to be missing a way to have 1Password enter login data automatically (for example when logging into this forum). When Roboform recognizes a known login prompt, it will enter the login data automatically without having to click a "Fill form" button first. 1Password seems to be unable to do the so?

2) I would like an option to keep my keychain unlocked permanently

3) I would like 1Password (the desktop client) to default to sorting my logins alphabetically by title - without having to click on title first.

4) I would like a "Edit this Login" button (or "Show details") in the browser extension window and perhaps in the search results popup window. For example: i got 2 Logins stored for the same site. 1Password shows both titles but if i am not sure which one is which, i gotta fire up the desktop client and look at the logins there. Another example: i am using the "Search Login" button to search for xyz, it displays a list of 3 matching logins but doesn't allow me to seeany further details that help me decide picking the proper one.

5) Win Basic Auth login screens (i.e, triggered by a standard .htaccess folder protection) seem to be not supported by 1Password? (Roboform can't do them either in Win7 x64)

1Password imported all my Roboform logins ( ~ 280) with just a minor cosmetic problem or two: Logins that were organised in subfolders within Roboform ended up having the folder name as part of the login title in 1Password:

Example: \mylogins\test.rfp ended up having a title of "mylogins\test" within 1Password (and no category assigned)

Since a lot of your competitors either crash or simply skip over them when they encouter subfolders in a roboform export, i am very pleased with the results in 1Password nontheless.

During the import, it seems as if the import process was stuck at around 30% with no more progress on the progress bar for quite a bit. I was beginning to wonder if it had crashed. (It hadn't but this is a bit unnerving). I had to use the website of one of your competitiors to find a tutorial on how to export Roboform Logins to HTML so they can be imported in 1Password. If i were in marketing, i would have some issues with that.

    Welcome to the forum, StephanK!

It's not so much that 1Password is unable to do that as that 1Password isn't designed to do it. Please see Can 1Password automatically detect a form and fill it for me? in the FAQ section of the user's guide.

Once you click on the Title column heading, 1Password should retain that setting across sessions.

Those are great suggestions, and it helps us to know you would find them useful. We may be able to look into improving 1Password in that area in a future release, though there's no information about what enhancements might be forthcoming or when they might be available.

Thanks for understanding! We intend to continue improving the import and export features in future releases. (That said, interpreting "\" or any other character as a foldername delimiter would prevent use of that character in folder names. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />)

You can read about the import process, including instructions on how to export from Roboform in our user's guide. See How do I import data into 1Password for Windows? in the FAQ section.
  • Thank you for your fast and detailed response.

Hmm.. Should being the keyword here.. I swear it had reset but it's working fine today. I'll keep an eye out for it and see if i can find a way to reproduce, if yes, i'll post a bug report. If no, we'll call it PEBKAC.

Thing that got me tripped up is the fact that I was trying to literally print, as the FAQ entry suggested - while having the output diverted to a file. RFs rather clumsy and in some aspects convoluted UI (one of reasons why I am switching to the imho way more streamlined 1Password) was where I got lost, I did not see/register the Save button in there until I googled and found a more descriptive step by step guide. So maybe adding another 1-2 sentences to the FAQ article when you guys get around to it would be a good idea. To me this is a crucial step in any trial period: if I can't get my data across, it's a No-Go, no matter how good the product is - my data always wins. But then again, could be I was just especially dense and I do know patience ain't one of my strong suits

    Anyway..

Just in case you're running out of new suggestions for future versions, here's another one to consider:

I sometimes find myself in need to fill a form with a login that was saved for some other form. Or the URL of the form changed and my password manager fails to recognize it anymore. In a case like that it would be nice to have a "fill this with.." button within the browser extension listing all logins in the keychain regardless if they match the current URL.

So in my suggestion the screen of the browser extension would look like this:

    - Fill.. (listing matching Logins)

    - Go and Fill.. (listing all logins but also goes to the new URL)

    - NEW: Fill with.. (listing all Logins just without the Go) - OR: add a little "show all.." link at the bottom of the "Fill" DropDown list to keep the clutter down.

PS: Dropbox syncing works like a charm as well.

PS2: Dratts, can't find anything wrong with this beta. I am impressed and I guess I need to order soon.

    Heh heh!

Thanks for that suggestion. That may be something we can look into for a future release.

Yeah, I find it almost unbelievably fast and dependable in my own personal use.

Glad to have you in the 1Password family, StephanK!
