How to detect and fill in forms for desktop apps

As a new user I get how 1Password interacts with the browser.

But how do I get it to interact with desktop apps that I have to log in such as Quickbooks, or when I want to save an FTP password from dreamweaver - is there a method that allows it to automatically interact or auto-capture these login details? Or I am using 1password in this case as a repository for data that I have to manually store and then lookup if I ever need a reference?
