Hiding the .ws.agile.1Password.settings file in Dropbox

Good afternoon,

I've been trying to mess around with this but haven't managed to successfully achieve what I was trying so far!

I'd like to amend the DropBox syncing and master folders so that it is included in the standard DropBox apps folder, rather than within the main master DropBox folder.

It was easy enough to set the new path in the General Preferences from Blah\Dropbox\1Password.agilekeychain to Blah\Dropbox\Apps\1Password.agilekeychain.

However, syncing appears to produce a new 1Password.agilekeychain and a new .ws.agile.1Password.settings file in the main DropBox folder.

Is there any way of getting this so it only ever syncs/reads/edits to Blah\Dropbox\Apps\1Password.agilekeychain.

It is not hugely important, it just helps to keep my DropBox file structure a little cleaner.

After you have copied your .agilekeychain to (some other folder in) your Dropbox, you should be able to open it here: File > Open 1Password Data (Ctrl+O). Then 1Password should update (re-write) .ws.agile.1Password.settings and take care of the rest.
  • That seems to get rid of the Blah\Dropbox\1Password.agilekeychain files but it still leaves a .ws.agile.1Password.settings file in the Blah\Dropbox folder. Does this file have to be in the Blah\Dropbox path or can that be moved, permanently, into the Blah\Dropbox\Apps\1Password.agilekeychain area?

it still leaves a .ws.agile.1Password.settings file in the Dropbox folder.

Correct. This is the designed behavior. You can delete this file, but 1Password will re-generate it.

Yes. This is how 1Password for iOS is able to find your .agilekeychain in your Dropbox.

I'm afraid not. 1Password for Mac, Windows, and iOS are all reading/writing this file from the Dropbox root directory.
  • OK thanks for the guidance.

It's not a huge issue, I just have a certain way of organising my file structures and this file makes it look untidy <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/emoticon-0136-giggle.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='(giggle)' />

The .ws.agile.1Password.settings file is hidden by default. It will not show up in Windows (or OS X) unless you have changed your settings to show hidden files in which case your operating system is just doing what you told it to do. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />

It will always be visible via the Dropbox web interface, however. We do not have any control over that, unfortunately.

I'm afraid it is hidden in OSX only. Windows doesn't hide a file when it's name starts with a dot (like *nix-based operating systems do)

I understand that, but it is marked as a hidden file in Windows as well on my system. Am I mistaken to think that this is something that 1Password does automatically? I don't remember setting that myself ever. If 1Password doesn't already do this, consider it a feature request. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

I just confirmed with Stefan, and 1Password for Windows does, in fact, set the "hidden" file attribute for newly generated "pointer files." If it is not hidden on your machine, simply quit 1Password, delete that file, and then relaunch 1Password. It will generate a new pointer file which will be hidden by default.

If you are still seeing the file in Windows Explorer, double-check that you have not changed the default setting. In Windows Explorer: Tools > Folder Options > View > Hidden files and folders > Do not show hidden files and folders
