Import is messy

I've been using SplashID for as long as I can remember. I am primarily on Windows and Android, but I also use Mac and IOS, so I was so happy to see that 1Password had extended its range. And the sync using Dropbox is suh-weet!!!

But I digress. Here's my issue. I exported from SplashID and successfully completed an import into 1Password. However, the import is quite a mess, with extra characters (particularly in those entries with a lot of info (not just password info). It seems to have put things into categories properly (wallet, logins, software), but there are extra characters everywhere (in particular, I see this a lot :0 on its own line, usually, but in the Android app, it ends up running into the line before it). There are also characters that I tried to copy and paste here, but the forum's not having any of that.

Does anyone have any hints on cleanly importing data into 1Password?

Oh, and while I'm here -- is there a way to look at the latest entries? (I'm asking because, if I have to blow everything away to re-import, I want to first write down any new entries I've made [after the import].)

Thanks in advance --

JMFlint

Welcome to the forums, JMFlint. Thanks for using 1Password!

I'm sorry that you are having some trouble. It sounds like some odd characters are being exported from SplashID, screwed up during the import process, or both.

We have made some huge improvements to the SplashID importer on the Mac, and since you posted this in the Windows forum, I'm guess you performed the import in 1Password for Windows.

Would you be willing to give it a go in 1Password for Mac?

I am also curious to see a sample of the "problem characters". Perhaps there is something we need to tweak in the import routine.

You can sort by modified date by clicking the header for that column.

You can also easily create a backup before you make any major changes by selecting "Backup 1Password Data" from the Backup menu. Then you can easily roll back to before the changes if you need to.

Absolutely willing to do the import on the Mac side -- in fact, I almost suggested that! Here's a couple of screen prints of some of the character oddness:

It looks like there's a field that's not being recognized, which is what gives the :0 result in most (if not all -- I have, um, over a thousand entries, and I haven't checked them all <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />) of the entries. Also, you can see that a field name (as opposed to data in that field) is being dropped in : Description on one of the above screenshots, : Software Name on the other

    Thank you!

Can you send me a sample of what you're trying to import? I would love to reproduce and fix this.

  • SO sorry! I never saw this post! (I'm not getting notified, even though I'm following this topic -- did I set that up wrong?)

I feel kinda weird sending you my sensitive information (the entries that are the messiest are probably the most proprietary). Let me think about what I might be able to send you.

In the meantime, the Mac import worked better, but still has weird characters and fields. I'm wondering if I'm choosing the correct code for import. What should that be? (the default doesn't work, with either the latest version of SplashID or version 3 (SplashID gives you the choice for both)).

You can just open the file in a text editor like TextEdit and replace your sensitive information like usernames and passwords with placeholders. We don't necessarily need the entire file, just the parts with strange characters. Again, please remove your sensitive info before emailing the file.

i'm not sure what you mean by "code for import." Could you clarify?

Sorry -- I meant the character encoding (see attached screenshot).

The latest import does look much better: I'm only seeing one oddity at the bottom of every record (see screenshot #2 - ":0" and ":description").

Plus I found another bit of weirdness when the import hits an apostrophe (I know, the bane of many a programmer). (screenshot #3)

If you need more info, let me know and I'll figure out how to send you a portion of the file (I have 1,000's of records, no way I'm going to take the time to text edit all the secure stuff out <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' /> ).

    Thanks!

Please do send a sample to support AT agilebits.com. Just a few lines which demonstrate the above issues (with sensitive information removed) will be sufficient. Please include the the version of 1Password you are seeing this in and a link to this forum thread when you email us. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

    Thanks!
