Switching from SplashID and have some questions

Hi,

New user just purchased the 1Password iOS app and am taking trial of the Mac software in the hopes of switching from SplashID.

A few questions that I couldn't find answers to after searching.

1) How do I view all entries in my database at once on the app (regardless of whether they are Login, Wallet items etc.)?

2) How do I generate a password from within the app? When I tried creating a sample web login, I couldn't find a way to do this. This strikes me as fairly basic functionality and something that (the far inferior) SplashID app has had for a long time.

3) 1Password has been on version 3 for many years, with many 3.X updates during that time. It appears that version 4 is coming for both the app and software. Will the 4.0 app be a free upgrade or will it be a new app that has to be purchased? I know that purchasers of the software have to pay an upgrade fee for major revisions. Will there be a grace period for those who purchased the version 3.X software this year -- meaning will we have access to a free upgrade given the recency of our purchase?

Thank you.

Welcome to the forums, tnormile, and thanks for using 1Password! <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

You posted this in the iOS forum, mentioned that you purchased the iOS app, but your questions seem to apply to the Mac version which you also said you were trying. I'll try to answer your questions for both.
1) How do I view all entries in my database at once on the app (regardless of whether they are Login, Wallet items etc.)?
This is not currently possible in the iOS apps, but you can click the built-in "All" Smart Folder in the sidebar of 1Password for Mac.
2) How do I generate a password from within the app? When I tried creating a sample web login, I couldn't find a way to do this. This strikes me as fairly basic functionality and something that (the far inferior) SplashID app has had for a long time.
We strongly recommend creating Login items from within the browser extension(s) on your Mac. This gives 1Password a chance to "learn" everything about a form which makes filling nearly flawless. If you create a Login outside of the browser extension, 1Password will only be guessing at where to fill your credentials. It is pretty good at this, but the success rate is much lower since it does not have the advantage of knowing where the information was filled in when you typed it in yourself.

To generate a password in the browser extension, simply click the password generator (or use the Tab key to switch down to it), make any adjustments you like, and then click the "Fill" button.

In the main 1Password for Mac application, you can select File > New Item > New Password or simply click the "+" button at the bottom of the window while viewing the "Generated Password" section (Preferences > General > Display in Sidebar > Generated Passwords).

On the iPhone: [More] > Add > Generated Password or [More] > Passwords > "+"

On the iPad, the password generator is only available in "Accounts" items.

We are working to improve this in iOS. Which brings me to your next question. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
3) 1Password has been on version 3 for many years, with many 3.X updates during that time.
Yep. We've given away hundreds of free updates which included support for Dropbox cloud syncing, Safari 5.x, Google Chrome, Firefox 6+, and even code signing using our Apple Developer ID certificate to add support for Gatekeeper in OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion). All 1Password 3 updates have been free to users from Leopard to Snow Leopard to Lion and even in the upcoming Mountain Lion. We love 1Password users. A lot. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

All Mac App Store licensees will receive a free upgrade to 1Password 4 when it is available. If you are buying now, just buy 1Password 3 on the Mac App Store:

Please let me know if there is anything else I can help with. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

    Cheers,
  • Thanks for the detailed response to my questions.

Yes, the majority of my questions were related to the app.

Re: Q2) I would love to see a password generator incorporated into the app. My guess is that this is on the list. There are many occasions in which I find myself needing to generate a password without having access to my desktop copy. For example, I have never been comfortable installing pw software that would contain sensitive personal data onto my work computer.

Re: Q3) Reassuring to hear that the iPhone app has a free upgrade path.

The only question left unanswered was whether 1Password desktop software licensees who purchase v3 in May 2012 or later will get a free upgrade to v4. I would hate to shell out for licenses for the desktop only to find a month or 3 later that a v4 came out. I understand that's an eternal risk with software but it seems that a major upgrade is in the works.

    Thanks.

Your guess is completely correct. As I mentioned above, we are working on making the password generator more prominent and easily accessible in iOS.

Sorry if there was any confusion. My comments above were regarding 1Password 3 on the Mac App Store. I don't have anything I can say about 1Password on the iTunes App Store at this time. All I can say is that we have always been known for treating our customers right. The App Stores make things a bit different since we can't easily offer a 45-day upgrade window as we have always done in our own AgileBits store in the past.

Your best bet is to purchase 1Password on the Mac App Store to be assured of a free upgrade with 1Password 4 for Mac is available. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

    Enjoy your weekend!
