HTTP Auth Prompt changes? (w/possible suggestions)

I was wondering if there has been any improvements with HTTP Authentication Prompts in Firefox/Safari and 1Password?

I have a few sites I use multiple times a week which still use this authentication method and it is very annoying.

If 1P is still unable to access the modal dialog, I've got another idea I'd like to ask about.

RIght now if you press the 1P keyboard shortcut while the modal dialog is showing, the 1P browser dialog appears on the screen but you can't access it since the modal dialog has first responder control.

What would be the possibility of having the browser detect if a modal dialog is showing and instead of having the 1P browser dialog appear, it launches the 1P application?

Even better if it could request the 1P app to show the saved entries for the website just like the 1P browser dialog would have done?

And if that isn't possible, I'm not sure if you could use the same methods but another option I'm using for one of these websites is that I have the username and password saved in a TextExpander shortcut[1]. By typing in the shortcut text, TE will then enter username TAB password ENTER which submits my login without any problems. Perhaps you could come up with something similar to enter the credentials into the modal dialog.

Or perhaps you could get in contact with the TextExpander team and come up with a way that 1P could interchange with the TextExpander Helper process which would enter the credentials on behalf of 1P into the browser's modal dialog.

[1]: NOTE: This is a huge security risk since TE doesn't have any kind of password protection and your credentials are saved in plain text. No one should use this trick for a secure/important site! If you choose to use this trick, do so at your own risk.

So far, of the supported browsers only Chrome has shown any indication of progress on adding support for HTTP auth prompt access to their extension APIs. Nothing yet, but you can track it here:

I'm not one of the developers, so I can't say for certain. However, I would imagine it would be very tricky to reliably detect this and launching an entire app from a keyboard shortcut in the browser could be extremely annoying to many customers. We're looking at some other options similar to what you describe which is pretty much the Auto-Type feature in 1Password for Windows:

I don't have any time frame for when or even if a systemwide auto-type feature might be available in 1Password for Mac, but it is certainly under consideration.

Thanks for letting us know that you would make use of it if we added it! It really helps to get a sense of what folks want to see. I can't say it is the only factor in determining future features, but it plays an important role.

Let me know if there is anything else I can help with in the meantime.

    Cheers,
