Ctrl + \ Opens new tab in IE and performs search

Just downloaded and installed the trial and everything seems to work except the Ctrl + \ shortcut in IE9 is not working correctly. It currently open a new tab and auto-types the username (and password in plain text) into the URL window causing IE to perform a search. Same happens when I click the 1P item from the command bar menu item instead of the shortcut-keys.

Welcome to the forums, trchosen1! Thanks for taking the time to contact us. I'm sorry that you are having this problem. I've never heard of this happening before.

Can you provide some more details about what versions of Windows, 1Password, and Internet Explorer you are using?

What are the exact steps you are taking to reproduce the problem?

I would love to get it resolved if there is a problem with 1Password's Internet Explorer extension.
  • Here is the version information:

    1Password: 1.0.9.294

    Internet Explorer: 9.0.8112.16421

    OS: Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit SP1

Exact steps to reproduce (every time):

    1. Open IE and browse to login page (e.g. citibank.com)

    3. Sign in

    4. 1Password automatically prompts to save password, I accept and save password

    5. Close IE

    1. Open IE and browse to same login page (e.g. citibank.com)

    2. Place focus (click) on the username field

    3. Press and hold Ctrl (left or right doesn't matter) and then press \

A new tab in IE opens, and the username/password is typed into the URL field and an enter must be entered because a search then happens.

I can reproduce the same things from the last 3 steps above by clicking the 1Password menu item from the IE toolbar and clicking "Log in with Agilbits" which looks like what the shortcut keys (Ctrl+\) is linked to.

So far I am still unable to reproduce the problem.

Does the problem occur on any other sites or only Citibank?

Could you let me know the exact URL?

Also, please ensure that Auto-Type is not enabled for that item.

  • It didn't matter what site, however the issue is now resolved by unchecking auto-type. I appologize if that is documented somewhere, who knew. Thanks!

I heard great reviews about your product and was going to purchase, however I saw you had a trial and love the IE plugin. I was about to give-up, but now this allows me to continue my trial and if I don't run into any other issues I will be a customer.

PS - What does that auto-type check box do anyways?

The Auto-Type feature is designed for filling Login items in applications. You never want to enable it for web Logins since it doesn't fill web forms but rather it fills text fields in the application (as you discovered). <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

If we can be of further assistance, please let us know. We are always here to help!
  • I did read that page regarding Auto-Type, however you might want to revise it because what got me is the last part of the page it references IE and the IE extension to enable Auto-Type and to use Ctrl+\ to invoke it.

    ---- snip-it from docs ----

You can even use auto-type in the extensions for Internet Explorer and Firefox

If you have a Login item for a site that 1Password can’t fill using its normal method, just edit the item, enable its Auto-Type option, and save the item.

When you visit the site in your web browser, place the insertion point in the username field; then press Ctrl+\ as usual. 1Password will fill in the username and password fields with the values saved in the corresponding Login item.

Note: You must place the insertion point in the username field before invoking the 1Password extension; otherwise, 1Password won’t fill in the fields.

I'll see if we can clarify this to reference HTTP Auth prompts. It should not be needed for web-based forms.

It is not for HTTP authentication prompts. It is for web-based forms that we cannot seem to fill. This happens rarely, but if it happens, then auto-type usually solves the problem.

My apologies. The Auto-Type feature does work to fill HTTP auth prompts, but the option in the Login item is for those rare cases Stefan mentioned.

More specifically: the Auto-Type option in the Login item is for Ctrl+\ and the 1Password button in your web browser. Auto-Type itself is for non-web browser applications (ironically, this includes HTTP authentication prompts) and it is available via the Auto-Type button in 1Password (not in your web browser).
  • Your program has great potential, however I think I will have to pass on purchase just becuase there are so many issues. Here is the latest and happens often (attached).

Can you give me the steps to reproduce the problem? I'd love to get it resolved.
  • Now that I have Ctrl + \ working correctly (by unchecking Auto-Type), it will randomly display the dialog as if I clicked on the 1Password menu item from within the IE menu bar instead of automatically type in the username and password. Then the iPassword dialog comes up I have the open to select (I think it says undefined or unknown) saved password and when I do for that website I get this error. I close IE and reopen same issue, it takes a reboot to fix but then it happens again with a few hours - There is no way I can reboot every few hours to fix this issue.

It's almost as if the IE plugin lost it's password associate to the website I'm on and it displays the dialog for me to pick one.

If you have more than one Login item for a domain, you will be prompted to select which one you want to use. Does that apply in your situation?

Could you post a screenshot of the error message you see? I am still unable to get the previous error you posted to pop up on the Wells Fargo site. It sounds like this is this a separate issue.

It can be really hard to resolve an issue if we are unable to reproduce it in our labs. Could you give me a list of numbered steps I can take that will consistently cause the problem? I apologize if I am being a little bit slow, but I am having a hard time following your post. As an example, something like this would be extremely helpful:

    1. Open Internet Explorer

    2. Navigate to https://wellsfargo.com/

    3. Press CTRL+\

    4. Error message occurs:

    [screenshot of error message]

And please do let me know if you have multiple Logins saved for the domain where you are having trouble.
