Autosave stopped working

Hi,

Are there any incompatibilities with 1Password running on Safari 6 preview/Lion? I have noticed that I am no longer asked to remember passwords for some time. I'm guessing this is more of an extension issue actually but I'm not sure? I'm running the latest versions of 1Password and the extension but not the betas. Thanks,

rc

There are no known issues with Safari 6. I've been running it myself since it was released to developers. It sounds like perhaps you simply turned off autosave. Please see the support article here for more information:

    http://support.agilebits.com/kb/browser-extensions/autosave-trouble-why-is-my-login-not-being-saved

Let me know if that helps.
  • Thanks for the reply. I actually do have it checked, but yesterday I uninstalled/reinstalled the extension so I'll see if it makes a difference. I'll report back if I still have trouble...

  • Just tried again on the Mail Chimp site. I registered, logged in, logged out, logged back in and nothing. Did I mention I'm using Safari 6 on Lion?

Autosave is working well at https://login.mailchimp.com in Safari 6 on Lion. As specified in the aforelinked support article, 1Password will only prompt to save unique passwords once per website. If you already have a Login saved with the same password for the same website you will not be prompted to save a new Login. You should use unique passwords, but if you choose not to, you will need to manually save the second login using the "+" button in the upper right corner of the extension.

A quick and simple test to rule our password reuse: just enter a bunch of random gibberish in the form and then submit it. That way you know reuse is not the issue.

Please let me know the results of the "random gibberish test". <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
  • Well...it seems to be working now. Not quite sure what happened but if I run into issues again I will review all of your suggestions to make sure it's not what you already told me. I appreciate the time!

I have updated to Safari 6 on Lion (OS X 10.7) and the extension is not prompting me to save accounts anymore. I'm getting the Safari sheet asking me to save my password on keychain and then nothing from 1password at all. I've tried to uninstall/reinstall the extension and tried with a few accounts (even the one I have just created for this very Forum). At some point I've got the bar showing but disappearing after a second and then never appearing again.

BTW, I'm running the latest version of the main app from the Mac App Store and the latest stable extension.

    Welcome to the forums, kaofelix!

The first thing you should do is disable Safari's password manager.

Then make sure you are not trying to save the same password twice. This will not work.

    A simple test:

    1. Visit https://www.tumblr.com/login where autosave is definitely working well.

    2. Enter random characters in both fields

    3. Press Return or click the "Log In" button.

Do you see 1Password's autosave bar?

    Is autosave enabled?

This is all covered in the support article I linked to above:

    http://support.agile...not-being-saved

    But I am happy to walk you through it. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />

    Khad,

Thanks for the advice, but I cannot get 1P extension to prompt for saves.

    - Extension is 3.9.5

    - autosave is enabled

    - safari password manager is disabled

    - safari is 'Version 6.0 (7536.25)'

    - several different Lion (10.7.4) systems

I tried your tumblr random login test. 1P did not prompt to save.

If I enable it, LastPass DOES prompt to save, but not 1P. In the past, 1P and LP would each prompt to save.

1P will save if I use the '+" in the extension, but will not autosave.

I don't know what else to try.

    Regards,

    John

Thanks for the detailed post, John. It does sound like autosave is not working in your case and it isn't as simple as password reuse. Could you try disabling all other extensions just to see if that helps? Offhand I'm not sure that it will, but I'd love to narrow it down.

Better yet, if you don't mind creating a new OS X user account, I'd be very interested to see if you could recreate the issue there. That is only if you don't mind.

Disabling extensions in the current user account is a good start.

Please let me know how it goes.

    Hi Khad,

Sorry about the delay in replying; timezone lag (I'm in Australia).

I disabled all other extensions in safari, to no effect, even after restarting Safari.

As well as the Safari details I gave above, I've found that 1P does not prompt to save (using tumblr login) on Google Chrome either:

    - 1P Extension is 3.9.5.39599

    - all other extensions disabled

    - autosave is enabled

    - Chrome password manager is disabled

    - Chrome is 20.0.1132.57.

I've repeated the save test on another Admin account, which I don't use much, and on a new Standard account I've just created. Both of these had a fresh 1P setup. The browser extensions for safari & Chrome were freshly downloaded from agilebits, and were the only extensions installed. So the setup was the same as I've mentioned.

1P does not prompt to save, but happily saves the details when using the '+' button in the extension.

Autosave WAS working for me until recently, which is why I (mistakenly it seems) linked autosaves failure to the Safari 6 update.

I also recently updated the main 1P app from 3.9.5 to 3.9.6. So, even though my understanding is that the app and the browser extensions are somewhat discrete entities, I thought I would try reverting the main app. I deleted the app with AppCleaner and then removed everything I could find with the agilebits name from ~/Library. Unfortunately, I don't have access to earlier versions of the browser extensions (one of the downsides of auto updates), so I was stuck with extension version 3.9.5.

Understandably, app versions 3.9.3 & 3.9.4 would not work at all with the 3.9.5 extensions. However, app versions 3.9.5 worked fine, but autosave still didn't work. So I brought my app version back to 3.9.6.

So, for whatever reason, 1P autosave does not function for me at all, and its not just in Safari 6 either. In that sense, the heading of this discussion perhaps should be changed (at least as far as my comments are concerned).

I hope you can help me with this. I'm happy to do any testing you suggest.

    Regards,

    John
  • Hi Khad,

Thanks a lot for the tip on Safari settings. I was getting annoyed by the save password prompts and didn't occur to me that autofill was were it would be disabled. That said, I still have the same issue as the OP in Safari 6. Didn't try other browsers, but unlike the OP I had it working in Safari 5 and it stopped work right after I've updated. It never worked properly in Safari 6, it just appeared once and disappeared after a second, really weird.

    Hi guys,

This is definitely weird. Is everybody with the issue using 1Password 3.8.20? Be sure to update 1Password to the latest version, 3.8.20 via the 1Password Menu > Check for Updates.

In addition, could you guys tell us if there are any errors in the Error console for Safari? To see the errors, please do the following: https://mikhailt.clarify-it.com/d/safari_error_log

Please do paste the logs here.

    Thanks!

    Hi Mike,

As I mentioned in my posts above, I am using 3.9.6 from the App Store, not 3.8.

When I tested autosave at tumblr.com (in Safari with all other extensions disabled), the only message I received in the Error console was:

    --

Failed to load resource: The certificate for this server is invalid. You might be connecting to a server that is pretending to be “edge.quantserve.com” which could put your confidential information at risk.

    --

That doesn't appear relevant to 1P though, does it?

In fact, when I try to do something similar in Google Chrome's console, I also get an failure message about edge.quantserve com, but it is coming from line 172 of tumblr's login script:
No mention of 1P

    John
  • Just wanted to say that I'm having the same issue. Autosave was working for me without issue in Safari until I updated to Safari 6 on Mountain Lion. I attempted the Tubmlr test, with Safari's password manager disabled, "Ask to save new logins" checked, and without a previous Tumblr account stored. I am using version 3.95 of the extension and version 3.96 of 1Password.

    Thanks,

    Michael

To help us track down the issue more quickly, could you please send us a Diagnostics Report?

In 1Password 3.8, just select Help > Troubleshooting > Diagnostics Report from the menu bar.

Since you are using 1Password 3.9 (from the Mac App Store), you'll need to follow the instructions here:

    http://support.agilebits.com/kb/troubleshooting/create-a-diagnostics-report-to-help-agilebits-help-you

Then attach the entire file to an email to support AT agilebits.com.

Please include a link to this thread in order that we might more quickly "connect the dots" when we see your Diagnostics Report in our inbox.

Please do not post your Diagnostics Report in the forums, though.

Thanks! I just glanced at your report. We will be able to delve more deeply into it tomorrow. (It is pretty late here at the moment.) But the thing I noticed right off the bat is the location of your 1Password data file. It is not exactly where it is supposed to be.

Please click "Stop Using Dropbox" in 1Password's preferences on the General pane, wait for Dropbox to finish syncing, and then click "Use Dropbox". That will place your file in the correct location.

You may need to remove and reinstall the extension in the browser afterwards. Please let me know if that helps.

    Hi again Khad,

What is "the correct location" for the 1P data file? Is it a problem that it is in a subdirectory of the Dropbox folder, rather than at the top level? Surely, such locations are not hardcoded anywhere in 1P.

I have been using that location ever since I started using Dropbox, because I different folders for sharing with different systems. That has never been a problem up until now.

But if you think it could be related to our problems, I could move it after I check out what impact it might have on my sharing setup.

    Regards,

    John
  • khad
    khad Social Choreographer
In some sense it shouldn't really make a difference, but 1Password 3.9 complies with Apple's application sandboxing guidelines, and I have seen some "odd" behavior related to having the data file in a location other than the default one for Dropbox syncing. I'd just rather rule it out as the source of any trouble.

If you are sharing the folder with another Dropbox account, just perform the steps to switch to the default location and share the "1Password" folder instead of the folder you are current sharing. It shouldn't impact with regard to shared Dropbox folders. You'll just have to share the new folder.
  • tyrotex
    tyrotex Junior Member
    Thanks for the info, Khad,

I have moved 1P to the default location in DropBox (~/Dropbox/1Password/1Password.agilkeychain) on all my systems.

I've deleted and reinstalled the extensions (3.9.5) in Safari & Chrome.

There is still no autosave in either browser.

One extension wierdness: On my admin user accounts, the installation of the extension in Safari 6 caused a total lockup of Safari, requiring a force quit. It took about three installations/force quit before the extension was in place. It worked first time with no lockup in a standard user account.

Have you found any other issues in the Diagnostics Report that I sent?

    Regards,

    John
  • khad

I'm not seeing anything in the report that clearly stands out as problematic. This is very puzzling. We may need to leave this open for now until we can get some more data from other users who are seeing this problem. It can be very difficult to fix a problem if we are not able to reproduce it.

For now you may need to manually save Logins using the "+" button in the extension.

Please do let us know if you uncover any more details.

That's OK by me, Khad. Thanks for looking at it.

Its more of an annoyance than a critical issue for me.

Thanks for the report, George. Sadly, I don't see anything that stands out as problematic. One thing that just occurred to me is I'm wondering if you or John have any URLs listed in the "Don't autosave on these domains" list in your extension. I realize that it would be quite odd that both of you happen to have tumblr.com listed there (and also seem to be having trouble on other domains), but I realized it was one thing I hadn't explicitly mentioned yet.

Would both of you please try setting aside all your Internet Plug-ins?

In Finder, select Go > Go to Folder from the menu bar. Copy and paste the following path into the input box and then press Return:
/Library/Internet Plug-Ins
Move all the files you see there to your Desktop. You probably want to create a folder to hold them just to make your life a bit easier. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Resart your Mac and let me know if you are still having trouble with autosave. Other than Flash, Java, and QuickTime the one plug-in you both have in common is SharePoint represented by the following two files:
SharePointBrowserPlugin.plugin

    SharePointWebKitPlugin.webplugin
I'm wondering if that could be causing any trouble. Let me know how it goes.

Could you guys please try installing the older 3.9.4 version of the extension? We're wondering if this is somehow a regression which could us narrow it down a bit.

Please be sure to disable automatic extension updates in Safari or it will just keep updating you to the current version and that won't help any of us. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
