1Password with the Steam Store

My teen loves buying PC games through the Steam Store. I told him I would like for him to use 1Password to make the purchases so that he can submit the credit card information easily each time and not have to rely on Steam retaining a copy of the credit card number. Teen tells me this is impossible because Steam purchases are through an application not a browser. Does this make sense? I suppose I could instead have 1P on his computer and have him copy and paste the credit card information each time but this wouldn't be as convenient as how 1P works with a browser.

Welcome to the forums, Kate! If Steam purchases cannot be made through a browser and are purchased via a separate application, one would need to copy and paste as you suggest. I've never used Steam myself, so I don't know what the case may be. It looks like purchases can be made on their website, but I didn't create an account to verify this.

Please let me know what you uncover. I would be curious to know if you don't mind sharing.

This is what auto-type is for: http://help.agilebits.com/1Password_Windows/auto-type.html

But Auto-Type only works for Login items. If I understood correctly, Kate wants to fill a Credit Card item so that it doesn't have to be saved on Steam's servers.

If it is simply a matter of logging in to the Steam application (as opposed to logging in to the Steam website in a browser) then Auto-Type is certainly the way to go.

There are auto-type buttons for credit card number and credit card verification number.
  • Steam allows purchases both in-app (through an embedded browser, in fact) and in-browser. Tell your teen to go to steampowered.com in a browser instead if you don't want to have another app than 1Password storing your credit card info - logging in there (top right) will then allow purchases that will be synchronized in the steam app automagically.
