Why Apple Partition Map instead of GUID Partition Table?

I have a question. Why use Apple Partition Map instead of GUID Partition Table for vaults?

I have been using Disk Utility to make my own encrypted disk images for the last couple of years. I thought Knox would be a great way to open, close, and manage these images. However, I have always used GUID Partition Table since it is the "next" generation that Apple is using. Why does Knox use the older file system? Or why not offer a choice?

A second question. Why only use Mac OS Extended for the Format? It seems Mac OS Extended (Journaled) would be better?

Thanks!

Maybe APM is for compatibility with older PPC Macs that doesn't support GPT?

    Hi guys,

The GUID partition table can't be used as a boot partition for PPC machines but they can read/write to a GUID partition.

Right now, the settings to create the Knox Vaults are the same settings in Knox 1.6 from before we bought it from the original creators. We haven't made any changes yet to this. I do not have a time frame on when we'll update it to enable the journaling system as well as switching over to GUID partitions.

Pretty sure there's some APM vs. GPT difference between older and newer PPC systems, and maybe the version of OS X they're running also matters, but it's been too long to recall the details.

[/quote]You're right, there are more differences and we can go into a deeper discussion about this but I was responding to your post about the compatibility, APM PPC Macs can read GUID partitions in Tiger, which is the only supported by Knox 1.6 and Knox 2.0 only runs on Leopard or newer.

Fine with me if we stop here, unless someone else wants to continue. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
