Is 3.9 an upgrade from 3.8?

Hi,

I bought 1Password about a year or so ago for $40 and have been a bit confused as to the upgrade procedure to v3.9. Your pinned message says that as an existing user, I need to delete the old version (v3.<img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/emoticon-0103-cool.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='8)' /> and download the newer version v3.9. What's not mentioned is that it requires the existing user to buy a brand new copy of 1Password from MAS - unless I'm missing something?

Is there a reason you've decided to exclude that info? I understand I "don't have to upgrade" (I guess until Lion is no longer supported) but for a point update (with "free" upgrade to v4.0) doesn't the full price (which is now $50) seem a little steep to upgrade just because my "license won't transfer to MAS"?

It's great software, but I'm having a problem justifying buying the app all over again. Will this be the same for Knox?

Welcome to the forums, Ben! I apologize for any confusion. We have never considered 3.9 an upgrade. I'm not sure which thread you are referring to. The MAS FAQ clearly states:
It is not possible to convert an existing 1Password license to a Mac App Store license. That said, if you purchase 1Password from the App Store, it will include a free upgrade to version 4.

Please note that you're not required to purchase 1Password at MAS if you don't want to. 1Password 3.8 will continue to be available for our current customers.
We clarified this even further in our "Is it possible to transfer my existing license into the Mac App Store?" support article.

Since 1Password debuted on the MAS, version 3.8 has received over 100 fixes, changes, and new features. I'm not sure how much more clearly we could show our commitment to our non-MAS customers than by actions like that. It works in Mountain Lion, Lion, and Snow Leopard.

As with all major version upgrades, version 4 will be a paid upgrade. By taking advantage of the offer you have just essentially "prepaid" for it. Pay now or later — it's all the same in the end. If it helps, think of it backwards: like paying for 1Password 4 (as you would have had to anyway) and getting the 3.9 update free.

The only real difference between 3.8 and 3.9 is that 3.9 complies with Apple's application sandboxing guidelines. For those who haven't purchased 3.9, they are not really missing out on anything. For those who decided to purchase 1Password on the MAS for its clearly marked price, such as yourself, you're just ahead of the upgrade curve already. You'll be the first to get version 4 and not have to pay any more to get it.

I hope that helps explain the situation a little bit better. If we can be of further assistance, please let us know. We are always here to help!

P.S. Knox is not available on the Mac App Store, so I'm not sure how this would apply to it.
  • Hi Khad,

Thanks for the reply. I was referring to your FAQ, though I did have a read though all the pages that came up regarding your integration with the MAS, and why you are unable to transfer licenses between versions.. What I'm getting at is that the your FAQ written under "How do I install 1Password 3.9 if I'm an existing customer?" has no mention of having to actually buy the the newer version.

My assumption from what you'd written "1. Make sure you have the latest version of 1Password installed by using 1Password > Check for Updates. This will install the latest version of the 1PasswordAgent process. The latest version will automatically remove the 1PasswordAgent when the Mac App Store version of 1Password is started.

    2. Move the currently installed version of the 1Password.app to Trash.

    3. Install 1Password from the Mac App Store." was that an update would be available through the MAS. Might it be wise to word it as "3. Purchase 1Password v3.9 from the Mac App Store"?

    Thanks again for your reply.

It's not possible to install any Mac App Store app without purchasing it — this is not peculiar to 1Password — but I've updated the FAQ to clarify:

Install 1Password from the Mac App Store (which, as with all MAS apps, requires its purchase; see next FAQ question).

    …

Why would I pay for 1Password 3.9 in the MAS if I already own a 3.x license?

It is not possible to convert an existing 1Password license to a Mac App Store license. That said, if you purchase 1Password from the App Store, it will include a free upgrade to version 4.

Please note that you're not required to purchase 1Password at MAS if you don't want to. 1Password 3.8 will continue to be available for our current customers.

Let me know if there is anything else I can help with. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

    Cheers!
