Changing AppleID password with 1password, argh!

MikeMcFarlane

I tried to change my Apple ID password today, and made a right mess of it. To cut a long story short, you can't cut and paste passwords into the password change page, but you can use 1password to insert values. So as far as I can see you need to type all the values in, on a page which seems to have a fairly short timeout! This would be fine with short passwords, but with 30 mixed characters it is slow and there is a possibility of making mistakes in the new password.

On the AppleID password change page you have the following fields:

Old password - must be completed

New password - must be completed

Retype new password - must be completed!

Security Q 1

Security A 1 - can be completed, but answer hidden so hard to check what or if 1password has done something! It entered my email address today without me knowing, luckily the page timed out so the change wasn't commited.

Security Q 2

Security A 2 - as A 1

Security Q 3

Security A 3 - as A1

Can I use 1password to help me change my AppleID painlessly?

Thanks.

Try Command + V to paste in on those pages that dont normally allow it.

Thats how I have to do it when changing my iCloud PW etc

Apple's script disables pasting into those fields. Never tried it but this might work.

You can fill the existing password by temporarily disabling autosubmit:

…and then using your existing Login to fill it.

You can also click "View password history" then click the generated password to fill it. No copy. No Paste. No problem. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

The complete steps are in the User Guide:

    http://help.agilebits.com/1Password3/change_password.html

But you can replace the bit about pasting under step 3 with the above "fill but not submit" solution.

Thanks, I love keyboard shortcuts! Doesn't work though. Annoying.

Interesting read, thanks for the link. Does seem Apple have made it a bit too complex!

OK, thanks. I've made a note of those tips so I can try them next time I need to change the password.

I can personally confirm that it is possible to change a password without ever opening the main 1Password application or copying/pasting anything. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

I hope it helps. Let me know how it goes.

Thanks for this Khad. It works for me too. At a technical level, what's going on here?

Interestingly, that technique doesn't work on the security question answer fields contained in the next page (presumably because they are labelled Answer?) but cut and paste does!

I believe that the information is being injected directly into the DOM, so any artificial restrictions a page places on copy/paste have no effect on 1Password's ability to fill fields. "Insecurity questions" are not usually password fields, so I'm not sure what method 1Password would use to fill them (or know which fields to fill). It is something to consider for the future, though. Thankfully copy/paste does work in those fields in the specific case of the Apple ID. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

I like using Diceware for the security questions which makes them easy to type or read over the phone if I ever have to.

OK thanks. I guessed that the 1PW extension was operating at some lower level. I was hopeful that the insertion point might identify the relevant object that needed filling.

I can see how Diceware would help but I was trying to follow Jeff's pronounceable suggestion in this blog post.

Rich Text Editor. To edit a paragraph's style, hit tab to get to the paragraph menu. From there you will be able to pick one style. Nothing defaults to paragraph. An inline formatting menu will show up when you select text. Hit tab to get into that menu. Some elements, such as rich link embeds, images, loading indicators, and error messages may get inserted into the editor. You may navigate to these using the arrow keys inside of the editor and delete them with the delete or backspace key.
