Questions about importing

I just purchased 1Password hoping to move from eWallet. I saw on the web site that 1Password has the ability to import from eWallet. Turns out, that's not accurate at all. Anyway, that's my fault believing everything that I read and for not using the trial version first. And it's not a huge deal because I can write a quick app to convert eWallet's flat file export to a csv file.

However.... I have other stuff in my eWallet file besides passwords - credit cards, travel reward cards, bank account info, etc. - all items that 1Password supports, but there doesn't seem to be a way to import anything other than Logins. Is this really the case?

Welcome to the forums, Mike! And welcome to the family. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />

I'm sorry for any confusion. Could you send me a link to the page on our site where you read that 1Password imports from eWallet? I'm wondering if it was in the 1Password for Mac User Guide. The 1Password for Mac User Guide says:
[sup]2[/sup]For eWallet we are not able to split their "flat list" .txt files into individual items during an import. Instead, your eWallet information will be placed into a single Secure Note. According to the makers of eWallet, their own software cannot import these files back to itself as they aren't intended to be used in that manner. If you have access to a version of eWallet that can export to a CSV format file we should be able to import from it in a better fashion.
Here is a link to Ilium's own documentation on this issue:

    http://www.iliumsoft...let-wallet-file

The current "export" function in eWallet is more like 1Password's "print" function (only it dumps the data to a file instead of to your printer). As a result, data exported from these versions of eWallet will be imported as a single Secure Note entry.

You would need to contact Ilium Software about exporting your own data from their app which they have designed to lock you in:

    https://www.iliumsof...port/contactus/

1Password will never lock you in because we believe that your data is your data. You can export all of your data from 1Password to a standard CSV file at any time during the trial as well as after your purchase.

I'm sorry to be the one to break the news to you about eWallet, but please let me know if you find out something different or if they have changed the export option. This would be great news!

At this time 1Password for Windows only imports Login items. If you have access to a Mac, you can use 1Password for Mac to import the data and the same 1Password data file will work on Windows as well. You can use the free trial of 1Password for Mac to perform the import.

I wish I had better news for you all around, but I hope that helps. Please let me know.
  • Hi Khad,

Thanks for the thoughtful reply. It was the Mac page that I was looking at - I just did a search on "Import into 1Password from eWallet" and this was the first page in the results. I didn't even notice that it was for the Mac version.

I did see the note about the eWallet flat list .txt file. When I read the note, it wasn't clear to me that this was the only way that eWallet data could be imported - I just read it as a caution against using the flat file method. The page says "1Password can import data from many popular applications, including:" - I didn't consider reading the entire file into a single note to be "importing data from eWallet", so I just assumed that the import would still work on a .wlt file, just not on the .txt file. It was a misunderstanding on my part - and another disappointing feature lacking from eWallet.

The other disappointing part of it all is the lack of import options for the Windows version of 1Password. Unfortunately I don't have access to a Mac, and this isn't the type of data to send to a friend to convert for me. I really, really want to get rid of eWallet and use 1Password instead, but I really, really don't want to have to enter all of my non Login items by hand.

    Anyway... thanks again.

I agree that it would be immensely helpful to have full import capabilities in 1Password for Windows, and I regret that we do not offer that at this time. Sadly, even with full import capability in 1Password for Windows, it would not make any difference in the case of eWallet since eWallet does not export data in a format that is machine-readable. (As they mention in the aforelinked section on their website, not even eWallet can import the data it exports.) <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_worried.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':S' />

I will be sure to pass your vote for full import capabilities along to the developers, though.

If there is ever anything else we can help with, please let us know.

    Cheers,
  • Well, I can easily convert the eWallet flat file to a csv format. It's pretty easy to create a tool to do this. If I decide to stay with 1Password, I'll at least be able to convert and import my Login entries based on the eWallet txt file.

I am glad that is an easy task for you. It would not be for the majority of folks! <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Let me know how it goes or if you have any other questions.
