Debugging a Login

I am trying to use 1PW (Mac or PC; doesn't matter) to view my brokerage account with Fidelity. All that is asked for is my user name and password -- standard stuff. However, I always get an error message: "User name and/or password does not exist" So, I first inspected the 1PW file and found no errors in the variables. Then I deleted the Auto Login and visually inspected the data after running 1PW. The user name was okay (no hidden characters) and the password was blacked out. And when pressing Log In manually, it again gave me the above error.

So, what am I missing? Are some login schemes un-automatable? Are there other things to try? I'm out of ideas. John V

Welcome to the forums, John! Sorry to hear you're having some trouble with your Fidelity Login. Mine seems to be working well, so I'm sure we can get it working for you too. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

    1. Visit https://www.fidelity.com

    2. Enter your username and password, but DO NOT submit the form.

    3. Click the 1Password button in your browser's toolbar, and select the "+" button in the upper right hand corner.

    4. Change the title and make any notes (if desired).

    5. Most importantly, edit the username which the Fidelity site has partially masked with asterisks. Make sure to save your actual username in the Login item. If there are asterisks in the Login item it will not work.

    6. Click the Save button in the upper right hand corner.

Using the above technique I was able to save and fill a sample login at:

Manually saving a login can be useful for logins that are either problematic to begin with or were once working but have since stopped. Doing this allows 1Password to refresh everything it "knows" about the page. Login pages often change as websites are updated and this can be a necessary but very useful tip. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

In this case, the Fidelity site is performing some client-side obfuscation of the username which means that you'll need to edit the username as described above.

Please let me know how it goes.
  • I'm a new 1Password user and have had perfect success with creating a couple of dozen entries, several with secure passwords autogenerated by 1Password. Until today.

I'm trying to automate my login to Social Security web site. I tried several times, even with the manual method you explain below for Fidelity - but each time, it doesn't log me into my account, but rather invites me to create a new account, which obviously I can't do since I already have one. Any thoughts?

I can log in manually by copying and pasting username and password from 1Password.

Welcome to the forums, smokeyforester! I know some government sites do some pretty insane things which cause some trouble for 1Password, but what's the exact URL of the login page where you are having trouble? I'd love to take a look?
  • Dear Khad,

I got a great reply from Stu Helm at AgileBits already - sorry to bother you! But here's what Stu had to say:

I've just had a look at the SSA page, and as I thought, there's some rather horrible coding practices going on, one would probably expect better of a government agency but I've sadly seem far worse from the UK government websites before now.

Basically, the SSA page has just one form for that whole section of the site, so poor old 1Password isn't sure which button to try and submit, since they're not marked clearly in the code and really there should be two distinct forms (one for new users, one for sign in) and so it means that 1Password's auto-submit feature is broken here.

I did what Stu suggested and disabled the auto-enter - giving me the option to click "enter" rather than "apply." It's not elegant, but it works - and it remembers my secure password which I could never remember by myself - so I'm very happy with the solution! And the problem - once again - is the US Government!

    Best wishes,

    Smokey
  • If you'd like to see the site, here's the login url:

I'm glad Stu was able to help, so I'll not duplicate our teams efforts here as well. There are lots of other folks who are waiting for our help. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Enjoy the rest of your week,
