A few questions…

The new iOS beta has a number of categories not present on the Mac version.

We can also sync through iCloud with the iOS version.
So far, I didn't want to play too much with these functions since the Mac desktop version doesn't support either aspect. Is there any risk in adding data through new categories for instance? What happens on the Mac version? Will the entry show up at all? I saw that editing entires could lead to corruptions with one of the β: do I have the same risks playing with new categories here for instance?

As for iCloud syncing, I fear it'd simply break my syncing possibilities since the Desktop version doesn't support it.

Should I wait for a new β for the Mac version before playing with either aspect?

    Hi Corentin,

We designed it to be compatible with 1Password 3 for Mac and 1Password for Windows, there are no new categories in 1Password 4. They're based on what is already available in the current desktop.

The changes we made is that we've gotten rid of the confusing Accounts category and converted many account items into Logins while Email, Server, Database and Routers are converted to their own categories. They're still accessible in 1Password 3 and 4.

What happens to the rest of the Accounts like FTP, Generic and so on, is that they'll become Logins as soon as you make changes to it and they'll show up as Logins in your 1Password 3 for Mac app.

The app has two separate processes for iCloud and Dropbox, they both can work at the same time, so you can use Dropbox to sync between Macs and your iOS devices but also use iCloud as a second backup between iOS apps only for now. Once 1Password 4 for Mac comes out, you can disable Dropbox and sync through iCloud only.

I hope that helps, please let me know if you have questions.

    Thanks!

Thanks a million for all your clarifications Mike (I didn't get any reply notification so I hadn't noticed your post for a while).

I'm a bit concerned about one thing you mentioned: iCloud only? Does it imply 10.8 will be required with 1Password 4?

A lot of perfectly good Mac (including my amped-up Mac Pro) cannot make the transition to 10.8. Does it mean they'll be out with the next version?

    Can't Dropbox remain an option?

In addition, I wouldn't be especially delighted to know one more app will be taking up a significant amount of my (limited) iCloud storage space.

I took this as he was telling you you could move to just iCloud if you wished. At this point they would seriously P.O. a huge portion of the user base if the removed Dropbox sync. If they did there would be no more sharing keychains. iCloud storage can only be accessed thru devices signed into that id. Therefore it would make sharing impossible between families unless they all used the same iCloud id. Not gonna happen here in my house its a his and hers and ours. Ours = iTunes purchasing so we can share apps and eliminate double purchasing etc. But all devices are using our personal ids for syncing etc. Hope that made sense. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_worried.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':S' />

    Hi Coretin,

Like Tommy said, what I was saying that you can go iCloud only if you want if it is your goal to do that. It's an option you have in addition with going Dropbox only or a mix of both iCloud and Dropbox, you can pick whichever you want.

We will not be getting rid of Dropbox any time in the future. Dropbox is still the only cross platform sync solution we can use for 1Password since iCloud can only be used with the Mac App Store and iOS apps, excluding the rest of the platforms such as Android, Windows and Windows Phone.

It's a messy situation, but you could use multiple iCloud IDs on each device -- a "primary" iCloud account that is shared for Documents and Data (which would also give you a shared Photo Stream, Backups and Find my iPhone all in one place) and a second iCloud account for mail, contacts, calendars, bookmarks, notes and reminders.

This is how my wife and I share a Photo Stream, since we use a single common Aperture library for everything and she almost never plugs her iPhone in or even opens iPhoto/Aperture on her own MacBook. This also allows us to keep all of our backups in a single paid iCloud Storage account, since we both have iPhones AND iPads to backup. The only thing that can get messy is Documents and Data, since it's all of nothing; for us we don't use the same apps in any areas where there would be a conflict, and in areas where we do want to share data (e.g. Pages, Numbers, 1Password, GoodReader, Flight Tracker, etc), it's actually really handy.

We do pretty much the same. But use our own primary account. Then one just for contact syncing which is also our shared iTunes ID. To be honest I was super happy with icloud till the other week when I was bitten by a contact deletion even that erased all of those inside my personal address book. Nothing major that can't be fixed over time. But still not happy about it. I lost a lot of professional contact info. I was able to pull most of them from an iPhone backup using ibackup viewer.

All in all that has been the only hiccup I have ever had since moving to icloud now MMe was a different story.

There was a reason we made each of our IDs as the primary and the family account as secondary. I just can't remember what it was.

I do like the single photo stream thing. I may need to ponder why I set it up. The way I did. I have already got some pans in the fire for this weekend. But it gives me some good things to think about in the hotel this evening while traveling.

    Thanks for the post.

In my case we actually ended up going with three iCloud accounts on my wife's devices, but this was primarily because I had already set mine up (and paid for additional storage) before she began using iCloud, so my iCloud account became her "primary" with the PIM data switched off, and hers became the secondary for her own PIM data, and we created a third "family" one to use as a shared contacts list.

Using more than one iCloud account is a great solution, allowing you to effectively share data between family members. I wish I could use it, but in my case it's not a practical possibility as the data from my wife and myself would conflict for a number of applications.

It looks to me like Dropbox is the only way out at this point,

That's why I'm still loving Dropbox. Have a his and hers account.

Oh yeah, definitely love Dropbox for a whole slew of other reasons... I'm actually a "Teams" subscriber, but I'll probably be more likely to use iCloud for synchronization of 1Password data once it's supported on OS X as well, simply because it provides a seamless background sync experience.

The best part is that whatever the requirements, 1Password 4 lets you do either or both at the same time...or neither and use iTunes File Sharing to manually transfer the data without touching both services. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
