Dropbox syncing between Mac & Windows - access denied on 1Password files

Hi Guys/Girls/Wizards,

I wanna start by saying that I <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_heart.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='(h)' /> 1Password. Its made my web usage much more secure and its simple to use.

I've never had a problem with it until recently. I have over 300 passwords and sync them between home, work and my iPhone.

Ever since last week i've had a problem with the Dropbox sync on my Windows computer. If I make a new password or edit an existing one on my Mac or iPhone, it won't sync it to my Windows Dropbox. All I get is an error message in the system tray saying "Can't sync <GUID> permission denied". All other files in my Dropbox sync fine after edits (Word, Excel docs etc).

Syncing via Dropbox between my Mac and iPhone work absolutely fine. No issues there.

I've done a bunch of troubleshooting, including scouring these forums for ages looking for someone else in my situation.

Tried: Troubleshooting - Clear Cache, Rebuild data file, Reset Folder permissions. Tried uninstalling Dropbox and deleting the Dropbox folder completely before re-installing it (default folder C:\Users\Warren\Dropbox). ACL permissions on the folder are default, my user account has Full Control.

I eventually got it to sync 100% by:

1. Completely uninstalling Dropbox on Windows computer.

2. Moving the 1Password file from the Dropbox folder on my Mac onto the Desktop therefore removing all related files in Dropbox.

3. Rebuilt the data file, then from within 1Password, moved the file to Dropbox.

4. Installing Dropbox (default folder) back on my work computer

However if I then make a change to a password or create a new one, those files won't sync to my Windows/work computer.

It's extremely frustrating! <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

There are no proxy or firewalls (Windows Firewall disabled) in between my work computer and the internet.

At home I use Mountain Lion 10.8.2: 1Password Mac v3.8.20 + Dropbox v1.6.2

At work I use Windows 8 Pro: 1Password Windows v1.0.9.305 + Dropbox v1.6.2

iPhone 1Password v3.7.2

I was not using the latest version of Dropbox until this problem started, so I updated it to the above. As far as I know, the above are all the latest versions.

Let me know if you need any further information to diagnose this.

Thanks,

Warren

Welcome to the forums, Warren! Thanks for taking the time to contact us (and with such kind words). <3

I'm sorry that you are having some trouble. Let's get things resolved as quickly as possible for you.

Can you tell me if you are seeing the error in OS X, Windows, or both? I'd love to see a screenshot just in case there is another clue that I can glean from it.

If you're seeing it in OS X, you may have some deeper permissions issues inside your home folder. These can generally be resolved by following the instructions here:

    http://www.fixkb.com...ermissions.html

Be sure to pick the tab that is appropriate for your situation (i.e. with install disk, no disk, etc.).

Please let me know if that helps.
  • Hi Khad,

The problem is only on Windows 8. No issues at all on Mac, iPhone or Windows 7.

I installed Dropbox on a Windows 7 computer last night and it synced all changes fine. Even edits of passwords, came through fine as you would normally expect.

I checked the ACL permissions that it had set for c:\users\Warren\Dropbox and then checked what was set on my Windows 8 computer. My user account was not quite at "Full Control" for the Dropbox folder, so I disabled inheritance and set it to 100% match what I saw on the Windows 7 Dropbox folder.

Restarted Dropbox and I get the same problem.
Can't Sync <GUID> permission denied
Attached is a screenshot of what I see in my system tray on the Windows 8 computer.

I've also uninstalled it again from Windows 8, restarted, then reinstalled it and pointed to c:\Dropbox. Same problem.

Just tried the LATEST version of Dropbox 1.6.3 which is only an hour old. Same problem.

    Thanks,

  • Well well well, after MORE tinkering, I've got it to work 100%! <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/emoticon-0169-rock.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='(rock)' />

I ran Dropbox as Administrator and everything starting populating in the folder and synced 100%.

Dropbox by default does not run in Administrator mode. Edited this on the shortcut for Dropbox as per attached image and WHALA it works. Thanks for your prompt reply Khad. Might be something to note if anyone else has this problem.
