Importing old data to 1password 4

Hi, I just downloaded 1P4 but when I loaded it up and selected the option to import my existing data, it didn't do anything. When I switch back to 1P4 now, it just opens up with no data and I can't find an option to try reimporting my data again.

I reinstalled the app to start fresh, but it remembers me and I just log in as normal. any solutions?

thanks.

  • Well, I ended up just being able to resync it through Dropbox. Seems to be OK now.

How did you get it to sync via Dropbox? That just fails for me.

Basically I'm stuck without any data on the new version and everything on the old one. What can I do to fix this?
  • For me, I started the new app, and went through the standard set up flow. Since my data is on Dropbox, I selected that, it asked for my master password, and the syncing began. Remember, this is not an upgrade, it's a separate app, so it isn't pulling in existing data on your iPhone.
  • I am experiencing the same problem as the original poster.

I do not user 1Password for Windows or Mac and since 1Password 3 for iOS did not support DropBox syncing I can not use that method to restore my data into 1Password 4.

During the initial setup of 1Password 4 after selecting "I’ve used 1Password before" and creating a new master password there is an option called "Import from old version", this is mentioned in the FAQ at https://learn.agilebits.com/1Password4/iOS/transition.html under the heading "How do I get my 1Password 3 data into 1Password 4"). Selecting this option launches 1Password 3 on your device. After unlocking 1Password 3 you are taken to the search screen in 1Password 3 with the search box filled in with "import_into_onepassword4" and no entries found.

There aren't clear instructions on what to do next, so like pinpoint007 I switched back to 1Password 4 and found it to be empty. At this point 1Password 4 helpfully synced my empty v4 database to iCloud. I turned off iCloud syncing in the settings of 1Password 4 and deleted and restored the app on my phone. However, when 1Password 4 launches the first thing it does is sync with iCloud and so it downloaded my empty v4 database and prompted me for the new master password I had created earlier.

I removed the app once more and then went into Settings->iCloud->Storage & Backup->Manage Storage and removed the 1Password data from iCloud. This allowed me to start the process over again. However with the same results.

Not sure what you mean. 1Password 3 (Mac/Windows/iOS) definitely supports Dropbox syncing.
  • Paco, 1Pasword 3 definitely supports Dropbox syncing. However, you need to have 1Password for Mac or Windows to create the initial file on Dropbox before you can use Dropbox syncing in the iOS version. See here: http://help.agilebits.com/1Password_iPad/sync_multiple_devices.html

Since I am not a user of either desktop versions I can't use Dropbox syncing to upgrade from v3 to v4 on iOS.
  • Got it, now I understand.
  • Strangely enough I just got it to work.

I launched 1Password 3 to lookup a password and it detected that v4 was installed and offered a button to click to import into v4. This worked.

Not sure why this didn't come up before.

It's nice when problems solve themselves.

same issue - ver. 4 offered iimport of 3 data - 3 opened, with search field auto-filled. No explanation of next step offered. Return entered. Manually switched myself to ver. 4. No data. Empty database. Syncing eventually was achieved via Dropbox. But the import from prior version seems to be defective.

There is a problem importing from version 3 if you have been previously syncing via Dropbox. Please sync via Dropbox for now since the import will not work in that case. Updates forthcoming.
  • Seriously, what the hell does the above post from khad say?

"If you've been syncing via Dropbox you can't import from v3. Please sync via Dropbox for now because the import won't work if you do."

    ???

When a company that I trust with my data shows that it has problems managing my data, I reach for the REQUEST REFUND button.

1Password 3.7.2 can detect that 1Password 4 is installed and it will prompt you to migrate the data.

However, if you have enabled Dropbox syncing in 1Password 3 then it will not prompt to migrate the data. The data in Dropbox could have more information (for example, attachments) and it is preferable to sync with Dropbox instead of migrating.

If you are syncing 1Password 3 with Dropbox then please either sync 1Password 4 with the same Dropbox account or disable syncing.
  • Glad to see support here for users not being able to transfer their data <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' />

    So here is my scenario.

1Password 3.7.2 with 67 items that I would rather not have to type again on a iOS keyboard. Just purchased 1Password 4 but can't get data over.

I don't have 1password for Mac. So when I tried to sync via Dropbox it failed.

I've tried to have the data migrate by opening 1Password 4 first. I've gone the iCloud, Dropbox and Import from old version. iCloud says no data found on iCloud. Through Dropbox I enter my password but get an error dialog box popping up saying essential data not found. Going with the direct import option the 1P4 goes through and sets my password and hint, opens 1P3 and then stalls with the term 'import_into_onepassword4' in a search box under Logins. I triend enable file transfer. But not sure what file to transfer. I tried using the 1P3 database backup & restore to create a file on a 3rd machinge (Mac)... but that file also didn't work.

Lastly I tried to migrate by opening 1Password 3 first but nothing happens.

I've installed 1P4 many times... each time deleting the iCloud files so it looks like a clean install.

    Frustrated. Bummed. Help!

    Thanks.

Welcome to the forums, HiFi! I'm sorry that you are having some trouble.

Please try turning off Dropbox syncing in 1Password 3, restart your device, unlock 1Password 3, and try the import from v3 again in v4.
  • Hi folks...

Thanks for the feedback before the holidays. Sadly that last suggestion isn't doing anything. The dropbox syncing has been turned off since it failed the first time.

Everytime I delete 1P4 (and it's iCloud data) and reinstall and try the import it stalls and i get that 'import_into_onepassword4' message

    The 1P4 pull from 1P3 isn't working.

Can i migrate the data over by some method where 1P3 pushes it over to 1P4?

    Thanks

I went back and reread your earlier post. You should be able to sync your data via Dropbox. The import from v3 will not work if you've been syncing via Dropbox. I believe there needs to be an update to v3 to rectify that. What happens when you enable Dropbox syncing in v3 and then in v4? It sounds like this should get you going:

    http://learn.agilebits.com/1Password4/iOS/Sync/Dropbox/stuck-dropbox.html

Please let me know some more details. Let's stick with Dropbox syncing since you have been using it.
