Khad, I see that you like tags and over time I have tagged most, not all, of the login items I use frequently.

Looking at the newest documentation for iOS I don't see tags. Did I miss it or is there a change back to folders? Will tags disappear from 1Password for Windows and Mac?

I have enjoyed tags. I appreciate the flexibility they afford since items can have multiple tags as opposed to existing in only a single folder at a time. I also use Smart Folders to intelligently group different items based on their tags. For example, I have a Smart Folder called "Recurring CC" which lists Logins that are tagged with both "bill" and "credit". When had fraudulent charges on a credit card and needed to update the card number on file I just opened up that Smart Folder and logged in to each one to update. Nice! <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

I would use a regular folder, but it is nice being able to also list all bills (even those which are either not set up for recurring payments or are being paid via my checking account). There isn't a way to have one Login item exist in a "Recurring CC" folder and an "All Bills" folder at the same time.

So, yes, I definitely like tags. So far I've not really missed tags on my mobile devices, but I will say that I will miss them if they go away on the desktop.

Right now, I can't say for sure whether the mobile apps will gain them or the Mac app will lose them. (Note that they are not supported in 1Password for Windows right now.)

I'm honestly not being coy. As far as I know this hasn't been nailed down at the moment.

    Tags suck! LOL

Every item belongs in one neat little spot (called a folder) or lumped in with all the other stuff. (not in a folder)

Who wants to go through all their items and put tags on them? Not me.

    Personally, if tags went away on the desktop, I wouldn't miss them. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
  • seems to me tags allow easier implementation of many-to-many relationships when compared to folders.
  • I really love tags. If they don't come to the phone, so be it. But I love having them on my desktop.

I've got many items that have more than one tag -- that simply wouldn't work with folders.

Note that Tags can be used to do what folders do, but not the reverse. Consider this:

If you took away folders: Someone who wants to classify each item in a maximum of one bucket can use tags, ( just don't apply multiple tags.)

If you took away tags: Someone who would like an item to appear in multiple buckets cannot do it any more (An item can be in a maximum of 1 folder.)
So if one has to go away, it really ought to be folders.

I got in the mindset that I was over-organizing everything so I'm basically using neither on a daily basis.

Search just makes it too easy to find what you are looking for quickly should the need arise.

Search, tags, folders, and Smart Folders are are useful in different instances.

Thanks for the feedback, folks! We'll definitely take it into consideration. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />

As for the "encrypting everything", Title and Location are fully encrypted in the Cloud Keychain format. Some metadata (creation time, etc) is still available. Here is an excerpt with a complete list of what is NOT encrypted:

I don't see tags in your "Not encrypted" list. Nor do I see tags displayed in 1P4 for iOS.

Will tags be dropped in the new data format? I was rather hoping that things would be the other way around, with tag support expanding beyond the OS X platform! In fact, the absense of tag support is one of my two biggest disappointments in 1P4 (the other being the absence of a diceware-style passphrase generator).

Khad, you seem to have moved my last comment from its original thread to this one. I'll trust your wisdom.

I too am an enthusiastic user of tags, and most of the tagged items in my keychain have multiple tags. I would be very sad to see tags disappear in 1P4. It'd be great to see them supported more broadly (iOS, browser extensions, 1PasswordAnywhere, et al.), but even if they remain exclusive to 1P/Mac I find them to be very valuable.

Apologies for moving your post without following up. I was called away right when I moved it.

You can be sure that I for one will be advocating for tag support in iOS and continued support for them in Mac v4. I have quite the taxonomy! Some of the organization that I currently rely upon would be impossible without them.

I must remain flexible, though, as it is one more thing to distract the developers from the core features. Without doing a proper study into it, my guess is that the vast majority of users either ignore tags or are downright confused by them. I know I've seen a large number of support issues from folks who were perplexed by the ability for an item to "exist in" multiple tags in the sidebar at once. They were thinking of them like folders.

Hopefully they will remain as I think they are darn useful, but it is too early to say.

I suppose that if tags go away it might be possible to simulate the functionality with smart folders and "hash tags" in the notes field. If Agile decides to go down that road, there should be an option to convert 1P3 tags to hash tags, and to create corresponding smart folders, when 1P4/Mac converts an Agile keychain to a Cloud keychain.

Might this be a good place to remind you of my availability as a 1P4/Mac beta tester? <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

You're always thinking outside the box. That's a simple but very clever workaround. I'm tempted to experiment with it now. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

That would be pretty badass (presuming any of this happens and it works well).

You can be sure we'll be posting more about the betas right here in the forums. You will be one of the first to know! <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />

I almost moved it just for fun, but I couldn't figure out where else to put it. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':P' />
  • Please add in my vote to continue the use of tags. I actually found the presence of folders confusing, thinking how could you being going backwards in functionality.

The optimum for users would be to have both folders and tags. If you are concerned with confusion, make tags an advanced option that needs to be activated. Of course, this would have to be balanced against the time and effort to code this up.

Welcome to the forums, Stoli! Thanks for your vote. I've passed it along to the developers.

    Happy holidays! <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />
  • Greets all, n00b here. Just wanted to chime in that Tags are GREAT and make for an excellent data segmentation method. PLEASE DO NOT REMOVE THEM and, BTW, it's a drag that they're not in the iOS apps as well. I use combos of smart folders and tags to keep lots of data organized and quickly accessible - and since my wife and I sync all of our data together, it helps us "know what the other was thinking" to find things.

    Great app.

I completely agree. I'm advocating to the developers for better support for tags across all platforms on your behalf and mine. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
  • +1. Tags are very useful to me (unlike folders, which I found useless having tags) and I hate not having them on iOS.

Thanks for the vote @juanjonol. Like Khad, I want tags/smart folders as well and it should be consistent across platforms. Hopefully, we can make that happen.

OK add me to +1 thing

I need my tags and sincerely want them to make it into the extension to narrow logins etc
