1PW 4.02

Bought and installed the new 1PW 4.02 on my iPhone. Options presented on my iPhone after the installation are: sync with DropBox, sync with iTunes, sync with iCloud. After I merged the old 1PW previously on my iPhone with the new 4.02 version, I selected all 3 sync options, have I totally screwed up? should I just have selected 1 sync option?

My reasoning was by syncing with iTunes the new 1PW data would be backed up by my Time Machine backups on my iMac (running Lion). My syncing with DropBox also seemed logical, since 1PW automatically syncs with DropBox - always has, and I just threw in iCloud just for grins....

So, what should I be syncing with? all 3, 2 of the 3, 1 of the 3 or none?

Help - looks like I've overcompensated yet again....

iCloud syncing is only iOS to iOS for now.

No news on 1Password 4 for Mac just yet, but please stay tuned. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

To sync with 1Password 3 for Mac, Dropbox is still available.

1Password 4 for iOS has been designed to sync via iCloud and Dropbox simultaneously, so you don't have to choose. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />
  • my understanding then of your reply is that using DropBox syncing for my 1PW (4.02) will automatically sync at the same time to iCloud. Right?

and then, my next question is why the option to sync to iTunes? Is that working and what would or does it do at this point? And in the future?

    thx for clarification....

I sync my iPhone to both Dropbox (to sync with Mac) and iCloud (to sync with other iOS devices).

The iTunes File Sharing option allows you to copy data to and from the iOS app to your computer using iTunes. It is less convenient than Dropbox or iCloud syncing and I would use it only if it is not possible to use other options or if you need to make a manual backup of your data. Here is the documentation about iTunes File Sharing: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4094

OK, but what is the advantage or purpose? If a change is made on your Mac, DropBox will drive this to all your iOS devices. If you make a change on iOS device #1, DropBox will drive that to your Mac. DropBox will also drive it from your Mac to iOS devices #2, #3, etc.

    Two reasons:

    - I like the initial setup experience with iCloud as there is no need to authenticate with Dropbox. I setup many devices and it makes a difference to me.

    - I have to be testing both Dropbox and iCloud all the time <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

You are right that a single Dropbox account can handle the sync.

It's also worth noting that iCloud sync occurs at the iOS level, so as long as you have a data connection it effectively runs in the background regardless of whether 1Password is running or not. If you make a lot of changes on your iOS devices, this means it's easier to ensure you always have the most up-to-date data between those devices. Basically, iOS transfers the 1Password data between the cloud and the device, and when you run 1Password it simply syncs with that local copy.

For example, I can make a change in 1Password on my iPad while I'm sitting at home, and then leave the iPad at home, run out the door and jump on the subway with my iPhone in my pocket. While sitting on the subway, with no data connection (since I'm underground), I can open 1Password and it will sync up all of my data from iCloud, since iOS has already taken care of downloading the iCloud data. Similarly, if I make a change in 1Password while out of data coverage, that syncs up with the local iCloud folder on the device, and will automatically get pushed up to the cloud when I return to data coverage, regardless of whether I open 1Password or not.

By comparison, with Dropbox I'd either have to run 1Password on my iPhone before I got on the subway, or wait until I returned to data coverage to get the latest data.

Will version 4 of Mac Desktop allow sync with iCloud, or just DropBox?

I have used only DropBox and everything syncs just fine -

In spite of all the endorsements iCloud syncing gets, unless I am missing something important - iCloud syncing is never going to carry changes to/from my wife's Win7 PC. DropBox syncing worked just fine before PW 4.x and it seems to work just fine now. So I fail to see any reason to change. While I accept iCloud offers an alternative route for data syncing, here in Atlanta, DropBox as far as I know has had zero periods of service outage. That cannot be said for iCloud - if people want to be picky. For me the feel iCloud issues are not significant.

Apple promised to provide iCloud support on Windows but I still do not see anything available for developers.
