1PW 3.8.2 does not logon when website has Security Questions

Using MB 10.6.8 and just loaded 1PW 3.8.2 software two days ago.

I was able to load 15 websites with simple logins successfully. By 'simple logins' I mean it requires only ID and PW. These work very nicely. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

But I have two websites that require, in addition to ID and PW, a revolving list of three Security Questions/Challenges after ID, but before PW site loads. In 1PW I added the Questions in column 'Field Name', and added the answer under Field Value. (that's what I interpreted from the 1PW Manual). So, when I click on the website, it loads and passes the ID site automatically. The next window opens with the Security Challenge/Question. The box does not populate with the answer. It just stops. Then I have to complete typing in the answer, and loads to the next page requiring the PW. The PW does not load automatically either - I type it in and am able to access the secure website. Basically 1PW only handles the first part, and is not able to complete the rest.

In the 1PW window of that website I have 'Display' set at Always, and 'Submit' set at Always.

What am I doing wrong, and how can I get 1PW to work on these "complex" logins? Many thanks for any help.

Welcome to the forums, hippydoc! Thanks for taking the time to contact us. It sounds like there may be some confusion. First, I want to be sure you are using the current version of 1Password. Version 3.2 is from about two and a half years ago. Thee have been 52 updates since then with 493 changes. I'm hoping it is a typo. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> If not, please download the current version of 1Password (3.8.20):

We do not recommend manually editing the field names and values as it can have unexpected results. It is mostly available for troubleshooting. Instead, we recommend always saving Login items via the browser extension. Saving a Login item via the browser extension allows 1Password to learn all the form fields on the page.

It sounds like the site you are describing has a multi-page login process. If so, you will need to save a Login item for each page. If the security questions change, you will need to save one for each question.

    1. Enter your credentials or security question answer when the site prompts you to, but DO NOT submit the form.

    2. Click the 1Password button in your browser's toolbar, and select the "+" button in the upper right hand corner.

    3. Change the title and make any notes (if desired).

    4. Click the Save button in the upper right hand corner.

You'll need to repeat that process for each page of the login process.

Myself, I just store the security questions in the Notes field of the Login item and copy/paste them when necessary. Most often sites only prompt for answers to security questions when it is the first time you are logging in to the site from a new computer. Do it once and you shouldn't need to do it again on the same computer unless you are constantly deleting the website's cookie.

If you're still having trouble, please let me know the URL of the site so I can better assist you. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
  • Khad,

Thanks for quick reply and suggestions. When I have more time in a couple of days (family visiting for the holidays) I will follow all your suggestions and see how it works.

For now let me just say that the version of 1P was a typo. I have v. 3.8.2. For some reason I left out the '8', twice. Sorry about that.

Will give you an update on success of the suggestions. Thanks again.

It is my pleasure to help. Keep me posted. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

    Enjoy your holiday!
  • Khad,

Again, thank you very much for your helpful info. I tried it, and it worked! <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> Many thanks.

I find, however, that I can log in faster on the multi-page logins, by just doing it the 'old' way. But that's only two websites of several dozen. I can live with that. So, I'm OK now.

    Have a good year.

I'm not sure what the "old" way is, but if you mean manually typing in your password by hand I'd suggest that perhaps your password is not strong enough if you are able to type it by hand. Stay safe out there! <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

    Cheers,
