Welcome to the forums, pibrew! Thanks for taking the time to contact us.

1Password 3 for Mac has the ability to sync via Wi-Fi, however, Wi-Fi syncing was not implemented in 1Password 4 for iOS. If you are still using 1Password 3 for iOS Wi-Fi syncing will work just fine, but if you do not have a copy of 1Password 3 for iOS it is no longer available for sale.

Wi-Fi Sync is not available in 1Password 4 for iOS at this time. 1Password 3 had this feature but we decided not to add it to 1Password 4 because it was not a great customer experience. It was difficult to set up, difficult to maintain, and a very manual process. The Mac and the iOS apps would need to be open simultaneously and you needed to manually sync each device.

Also, if the Wi-Fi network’s information changed, sync would break completely. You have no idea how many routers we’ve asked customers to reboot!

Cloud syncing via iCloud (iOS only for now, Mac soon) and Dropbox is effortless and automatic. It provides the best experience for customers because it is consistent, fast, and reliable. We recommend customers to use one of these sync options instead.

With that said, we have heard from many customers that they would prefer not to sync using the cloud. We are investigating how to best enable direct syncing with 1Password 4 and have invited a few people to our Beta program to help ensure we find a good solution. We will announce more details when they are available.

If we can be of further assistance, please let us know. We are always here to help!

That was my next question...I see the option to sync the iPad with iCloud, but not my Macbook. I am still in the "try it" stage and have not purchased the software for my Macbook. I need to be sure it is what I need. I would rather sync to iCloud than Dropbox.

  • Hello,

first of all let me say that I already bought 1Password 4 iOS,

after that I wanted to buy the newest Version for MAC too.

But the main issue that prevent me from buying 1 Password for MAC is that it seems to me

that the versions aren't full compatible with each other.

It's a problem that i can't get the syncing done with iCloud.

Dropbox syncing is not first Choice for me, I don't want to do this,

and I don't understand the Agile Blog Posting about the upcoming Solution with Syncing over USB with

    a iOS Device like iPAD???

I'm looking forward to any comment from you!

Thank You, and sorry for my english..

    Welcome to the forums, Talarion!

All versions of 1Password on every platform — Mac, Windows, iOS, Android, Windows Phone — are compatible and sync together very well. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Dropbox syncing is supported across all of those platforms. It is completely automatic and secure. For details, please see our "Security of storing 1Password data in the cloud" document. Dropbox is our recommend cross-platform sync solution.

iCloud syncing is brand new and has only been released in 1Password 4 for iOS so far. It will be included in 1Password 4 for Mac when it is is released. We could have held on to 1Password 4 for iOS and waited to release it with version 4 for Mac so they could sync via iCloud right away, but we didn't think that was fair to all the folks who only use iOS devices and don't sync with a Mac. Instead of looking at it as waiting for iCloud sync on Mac, consider that you're getting iCloud sync on iOS early. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> If you are only syncing iOS devices, iCloud is a great option.

Wi-Fi syncing continues to work via 1Password 3 for iOS and 1Password 3 for Mac, but as I mentioned above it was not implemented in 1Password 4 for iOS so 1Password 3 for Mac cannot sync with it. Between the need for manual syncing and networking issues, it did not provide a great user experience. Over the years, our team fell in love with the ease of Dropbox and stopped using Wi-Fi sync altogether. Since none of us used it, and in light of the feature’s problematic nature for many of our users, we decided not to include Wi-Fi syncing when we rewrote 1Password 4 from the ground up.

When we released 1Password 4 for iOS, many people wrote in to explain that direct syncing was critical to their workflow. Some need it because of work rules, some because of regional restrictions that prevent access to sync solutions like Dropbox. Others simply prefer to keep all their data locally without depending on the cloud.

If you’re one of the people who requires the ability to sync directly, rest assured that we’ve heard from you that this is critical to your needs.

USB syncing, a new way to sync data directly, is already in private beta testing. We’re pretty excited about this because almost all of the support issues caused by Wi-Fi syncing were related to weird network configurations. By syncing directly over USB, we can avoid all those issues. Hopefully, we will never have to ask a customer to reboot their router again. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

We don’t have an ETA on when USB syncing will be available, but beta testing results so far have been promising. If you rely on direct syncing, please stick with 1Password 3 for a little while longer until the USB sync solution is completed.

We’ll post more information about USB syncing soon. Stay tuned!
