1Password 4 Fails Syncing With Dropbox On iPhone and Pad [resolved]

I just noticed this today. Both on my iPhone 5 and iPad 3 I'm getting the red error mark for Dropbox syncing. iCloud and iTunes syncing both work without issue. On my phone I toggled Dropbox syncing off then on and was taken to the Dropbox app where it did show the "Allow" screen for letting 1Password access Dropbox but when it switches back to 1Password syncing again fails. On my iPad toggling Dropbox syncing off then on just opens the Dropbox app to a spinning wheel on the screen.

There has been a recent update to Dropbox and I'm suspicious that this is the cause of the problem.

  • I just checked my wife's iphone 4S. She still had version 3 1Password as well as 4. 3 also had a problem with Dropbox syncing. Version 4 showed the same sync failure message as mine did. Dropbox syncing itself is working between our macs and idevices but it's not syncing with 1Password in iOS. Again I'm suspicious of the updated version of mobile Dropbox.
  • I'm having problems with this as well. My iPhone 4 has an exclamation mark under the settings panel. Glad I'm not alone...

Welcome to the forums, maclunian! I'm sorry that you and pappjo are having some trouble.

1Password does not use the Dropbox mobile app for syncing. It is only used for authentication when you first set enable Dropbox syncing. (Or, if you do not have the Dropbox mobile app installed, the Dropbox website is used for authentication instead.) Once Dropbox syncing has been properly authenticated 1Password handles all the syncing itself. The Dropbox mobile app is never used again (unless you re-authenticate).

I heard a report that someone else that there may have been some issues with the Dropbox servers earlier, but they should be resolved now. I'm wondering if that could have been the issue.

Can you tell me what the error message is when you tap the red badge displayed in 1Password next to the Dropbox sync switch in Settings > Syncing?

    Thanks!

I believe you are correct about the Dropbox server issues. This morning 1Password is syncing properly on all our devices with no error message/red badge. But I'm very curious, you say that 1Password does not sync with Dropbox and only does an initial authorization. Then what is it doing in the sync tab when we see the progress bar for Dropbox as well as iCloud?

    Hi there,

What Khad means is that the Dropbox app itself (the app you install on your phone) is only used for initial authentication. It isn't used for syncing. 1Password has code built-in to talk directly to Dropbox, without going through the Dropbox app.

    I hope that helps.
  • Ok, I think I understand. But if that error message/red badge appears does that mean that 1Password cannot communicate with Dropbox itself or with the app?

1Password never communicates with the Dropbox app after the initial authentication, so the red badge will never mean that 1Password cannot communicate with the Dropbox app since 1Password never even attempts to do so. You can completely uninstall the Dropbox app from your iOS device. It is not used for syncing. It's not even required for authenticating with Dropbox but will be used if it is installed simply as a matter of convenience.

If you are having trouble with Dropbox syncing it is being reported by the Dropbox servers directly. The Dropbox mobile app has nothing to do with it. Please let me know what the error message is so we can better assist you if it happens again. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
  • Apparently there was some temporary problem with the Dropbox servers which had cleared up by this morning. I just never understood that it wasn't the app that was being synced with so I had tried messing around with those settings in attempt to deal with the issue. Now I understand that 1Password communicates directly with the Dropbox servers so if I see that error again I'll understand that it's a server issue not one with the app.

Sounds like you got it. Please do keep us posted. While the Dropbox mobile app is not used for syncing your 1Password data the error could be something we need to resolve since the communication depends on two parts: the 1Password app and the Dropbox server.

    Cheers!
