A couple questions about the Mac browser extension and iOS compatibility

I have just purchased 1password Version 3.8.20 (build 31499) for Mac.

It appears to be quite buggy with it sometimes responding to clicks and sometimes not, especially when you are trying to click on things like the small arrow to get into edit a specific login. It either launches the site (until you get into the login to stop it doing it) or it clicks off as if you are trying to get rid of it. Very frustrating.

I am even more frustrated with the ipad and iphone apps though.

Some of the literature it says that there are 3 apps (http://help.agilebit...le_devices.html) but some of the literature (https://agilebits.com/onepassword/ios) seems that there only is one. Ceratinly on Apple Store I can only find one.

I paid for and downloaded the one i could find and put it on my iphone. Looks nothing like the pictures I can see and it won't snyc with iTunes.

I tried to put it on my ipad1 and it just says it needs a newer version of the software. Well my ipad is up to date.

Totally confused with this software. It'll be 1 star recommendation on Apple site for me I'm afraid.

<EDIT> Figured out the ipad1 problem. Not compatible. can i get a previous version of 1password that is compatible?

Welcome to the forums, TheFalcon! Thanks for taking the time to contact us. I'm sorry that you are having some trouble.

It sounds like you are referring to 1Password's browser extension rather than the main 1Password for Mac application. If you click the Login's title it will log you in to the site. However, if you click the circled ">" then you can view the Login's details right in the browser extension. If you are having trouble clicking the circled ">" please let me know which browser you are using and if you are able to view the details by pressing the Right arrow key on your keyboard instead.

If you can provide some more details, I'd love to help.

Apologies for any confusion. The first link you posted is the User Guide for the old version 3 of 1Password for iOS. There were three versions of 1Password 3 for iOS: iPhone (which also ran on iPod touch), iPad, and Pro (which simply combined the other two apps at a discounted price). This was very confusing, so starting with 1Password 4 for iOS there is only a single universal app which runs on iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. This is covered in the migration FAQ, but I'd be happy to answer any additional questions you may have.

Apple does not allow any apps to sync between iOS and OS X via iTunes. It is a longstanding restriction that they imposed years ago. No app is able to sync via iTunes.

Dropbox, however, syncs 1Password data across all supported platforms including iOS and Mac. You can also transfer data for backup/restore purposes via iTunes File Sharing. It isn't syncing per se since it is unidirectional. iTunes File Sharing is the only form of data transfer Apple allows via iTunes.

We use and recommend Dropbox since it is automatic and secure.

1Password 4 for iOS takes advantage of some powerful new features that are only available in iOS 6. Sadly, Apple has decided not to support iOS 6 on the original iPad. The iOS 6 requirement is listed on the App Store page for 1Password 4, and if you try to purchase from an incompatible device Apple will not allow it. However, it is possible to purchase on another device (or in iTunes on your Mac) despite not having a compatible device.

There is not a way to download old versions of apps on the App Store if you did not purchase them when they were available for sale, so unless you previously purchased 1Password 3 for iOS you will not be able to install it on your older devices(s). If you did purchase 1Password 3 when it was available, you can install it on your first generation iPad by following the steps here:

    http://learn.agilebi...o-i-download-it

Do you have any other iOS devices or just the first generation iPad?

Yes you are correct. I am using Firefox 18.0. Yes when I use the keyboard Right arrow key it works every time.

Okay must have got confused with what the app is doing. In the "Settings", "Snyc" it has iCloud, Dropbox & File Sharing. I had used the page at http://learn.agilebi...ng-started.html thinking the iphone would get the passwords from the computer. Obviously that is not what it is for although I can't see what it is for. Is it for sharing the data between different devices?

Unfortunately I am new to 1Password so no I don't have a previous version. I am actually quite annoyed with Apple over this. In my house I have 1 iMac, 3 MacBook pros, 2 iPod Touch, 5 iPhones, 1 iPad1, 1 iPad2, 1iPad mini and I think 3 Ipod's. The iPad 1 is only about 2 years old. I understand that things go out of date (not in 2 years though), that is not the problem. The problem is that you can't geta hold of apps that are compatible if they, like yourselves, have an updated one. This is like a double blow. My iPad still works like it did (great) but as time goes on there is less available for it because apps that are compatible are being "overwritten" by companies to use the latest iOS. I know I am being cynical but it is obviously to make the iPad1 go obsolete more quickly than if previous versions of apps were still available and to make customers like me upgrade it quicker. My son is wanting an iPad mini. I am doing my best to put him off now and to go for an Andorid tablet. that's how much they have annoyed me. I have been Apple through and through for years and years, but I think it is time for a change.

Thanks for confirming. For now perhaps just use the Right arrow key. We'll investigate the issue when clicking with the mouse in the Firefox extension to reveal a Login's details. I appreciate you mentioning it.

iTunes File Sharing is only unidirectional transfer. Think of it like email a file attachment. If you update a document, you need to resend the updated copy as an email attachment to the person (or computer) where you want the updated copy of the file. It is a manual process which is why we really don't recommend it if you want to keep the data always in sync. It is best for one off backup and restoration, and it only works to transfer data between 1Password 4 for iOS and your desktop computer.

If you want to keep the data in sync at all times we strongly recommend Dropbox syncing since it is automatic, works across all supported platforms and versions, and is a secure way to sync 1Password data. Please follow the steps in the User Guide to set up Dropbox syncing:
Unfortunately I am new to 1Password so no I don't have a previous version.
Regarding the final issue, we do wish there was a way to make the old version (1Password 3 for iOS) available to folks who purchased 1Password 4 for iOS, but Apple doesn't really provide a way to do this unless you previously purchased the old version. Even that would be impossible if we didn't make 1Password 4 a separate app, so we did that to at least give the option to folks who did purchase the old version. I wish I had a better answer, but I don't know of a good solution for getting 1Password on pre-iOS 6 devices if you didn't purchase 1Password 3 for iOS before version 4 was released.

I completely understand your frustration. There is at least one 1st generation iPad in my family, but I take a slightly more optimistic view of the situation. You could be absolutely correct that Apple is just trying to force folks to buy new hardware, but I think a more likely explanation is that iOS 6 contains some powerful new features that just won't run smoothly on the old hardware. Rather than shoehorn iOS 6 onto the original iPad, Apple decided that if it couldn't be done well they would rather not do it at all. It is already a bit of a stretch on the oldest devices that do run iOS 6. It would likely be unbearable on even older devices.

Since the iPad is such a brand new product, hardware (and software) development has been happening at an extremely fast pace. It is not extremely surprising to me that even "recent" hardware — including the very first iPad — is already out of date. Heck, they introduced the 4th generation iPad with essentially double the power of the 3rd generation a mere eight months after the 3rd generation iPad debuted. It is frustrating in some ways (as we are seeing in this case), but it also a very exciting time. I for one would rather they continue improving the hardware and software at such a rapid pace rather than slow down and artificially delay updates. I know that doesn't really help much in any practical way, but perhaps it helps a bit in a philosophical way.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

    Cheers,

Yeah that's the way I wanted it to work and it didn't seem to. Anyway now using Dropbox (I had an account already that I had forgotten about) and it is working seemlessley.

With regards the iPad issue. My issue isn't at all with innovation. Heck that's why I am an Apple fan and have been for years. It's the abandoning of previous versions that annoys me. If i liken it to a car I bought brand new about three years ago. It was state of the art, with all the bells and whistles I wanted. After about two years a new model came out. It had different bells and whistles, some much better than in mine. I didn't complain at that because I could still buy things for my model, they weren't as good as the ones for the new model but I could still purchase them to fit mine. Could you imagine the outcry if Audi, Mercedez, GM turned around and said, well we have a new model out now, see that last model, well it'll work the same but when you want to buy something for it you can't, so you are better just going ahead and buying our new model!!!!

Fantastic! I'm glad Dropbox syncing is working well for you. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />

I completely understand your point about upgrades and the car analogy. My point was simply that innovation is happening with the iPad so much faster than innovation in any other area. It's almost like the first iPad was a motorcycle but the next iPad was a car. It was so sleek and nice and got you around very easily (and still does). Unfortunately, now you want to tow a trailer with it. A motorcycle just doesn't have the power to do things that the new cars do. It is an imperfect analogy in probably many ways, but my main point is that raw power just isn't available on the 1st gen iPad to do the things that the newer models are doing.

It is still frustrating if you want to tow something, though.
