How To: Install the Safari extension

Click this link in Safari to open our extension page, which should automatically trigger the Safari extension download and installation process. When it's finished, you should see a new 1P button in Safari's toolbar.

If that button does not appear, please check to make sure your Safari extensions are enabled:

  • Enable Extensions: If the 1Password icon does not appear on the left side of Safari's toolbar, go to Safari > Preferences > Extensions and verify that Extensions are enabled
  • Enabled Automatic Updates: On that same Safari Extensions preference pane, click "Updates" in the bottom left corner and ensure that "Install Updates Automatically" is enabled

  • Restart the 1Password Helper: If you are still having trouble, open 1Password and select Help > Troubleshooting > Restart Helper form the menu bar and then Restart Safari:
    • Snow Leopard users: press Command-Q
    • Lion users: press Option-Command-Q (this completely clears its cache) but note that you will lose all your open windows and tabs so bookmark any as necessary

Once you're done, you may familiarize yourself with the extension in our 3 Minute Expert Guide.

How to update the Safari extension

By default Safari will update the 1Password extension automatically, but performing a manual update is simple:

  1. Go to Safari > Preferences > Extensions and compare the latest version of your 1Password extension to our extension changelog
  2. If automatic updates are enabled (which we recommend) but you know a newer version is available, temporarily disable the automatic option which should display any update available
  3. Click the Install button, then reenable automatic updates to let Safari continue to update you automatically
  4. Restart the 1Password Helper: Open 1Password and go to Help > Troubleshooting > Restart Helper
  5. Restart Safari:
    • Snow Leopard users: press Command-Q
    • Lion users: press Command-Option-Q (this completely clears its cache) but note that you will lose all your open windows and tabs so bookmark any as necessary (Note: If you disabled "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps' in System Preferences > General then please use Command-Q to quit Safari under Lion)
