How To: Create a new Firefox profile

For some rare problems involving a corrupt Firefox profile, it may be necessary to start with a fresh profile.

Before you proceed, we recommend backing up your Firefox bookmarks.

Alternatively, you can set up Firefox Sync which will backup not only your bookmarks but also your preferences, history, and even tabs! You can set it up in Firefox's preferences on the "Sync" pane. That will allow you to easily restore your Firefox data and preferences in the new profile.

Starting the Profile Manager

  1. Quit Firefox completely.
  2. Open Terminal (found in /Applications/Utilities).
  3. Copy and paste this command into Terminal and then press Return:

    /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin -p

    Firefox - Choose User Profile

If the Profile Manager window does not open, Firefox may have been running in the background, even though it was not visible. Close all instances of Firefox or restart the computer and then try again.

Creating a profile

  1. Click the Create Profile... button in the Profile Manager.
  2. Click Continue and enter the name of the profile. Use a profile name that is descriptive, such as your personal name. This name is not exposed on the Internet.

    Enter new profile name

  3. To create the new profile, click the Done button.

  4. Click the Start Firefox button with your new profile selected.

Installing the 1Password extension

Install a "fresh" copy the 1Password Firefox extension.

Please test the 1Password extension to confirm that it is working well now. Restart Firefox a couple times. Kick Firefox's tires a bit — so to speak.

Once you have verified that everything is working well, you may optionally set up syncing again to restore your other Firefox data and preferences.
