How To: Sort by password strength

1Password is designed to make the secure thing to do the easy thing to do. With 1Password it is easy to have a strong, unique password for every website. 1Password remembers all of them so you don't have to. Since reusing passwords is one of the most common mistakes most folks make, we wanted to make it easy to fix the problem. Ideally you want to make sure that every site has a unique password, but here is how you can determine which passwords are the weakest and change them first. It is a great place to start.

  1. Open 1Password and click the "Traditional" layout button to see all your data in columns. The button is just left of the search field at the top of the window or you can select it from the View > Layout menu.
  2. Make sure View > Columns > Password Strength is enabled.
  3. Now click the Password Strength column header to sort all your Logins by the strength of their passwords.

Create a Smart Folder

If you have a lot of Logins with weak passwords and want to list all of them separately while you generate new, stronger passwords, you can create a Smart Folder to show those.

Select File > New Smart Folder from the menu bar. A search dialog will pop up in the top of your window. Make sure you set the search criteria in the bar at the top to search "Everywhere" and "Everything." Below that select the following:

Save Smart Search

  • All of the following are true:
  • Password Strength
  • is less than or equal to
  • Select a number here. It doesn't matter what number you use. Start with 40 and if that looks overwhelming, switch to 20. Once 20 is done, then go back to 40. This is your first pass at updating passwords.

Click “Save”, and give your New Saved Search a nice title like “Update These Soon”.

When you have time to devote to updating these weaker passwords, you can use the Password Generator within 1Password to update them. As you increase the strength, they will no longer show in the Smart Folder you just created.
