Back up 1Password for iPhone and iPad using Windows

A 1Password saved is a 1Password earned...

As we continue to work on bringing you the best experience for 1Password on iOS, we recommend that you keep a copy of your 1Password app files that are designed for your specific iOS versions. As part of the evolution of 1Password, we sadly have to say goodbye to older devices once in a long while as we retire them to welcome in the new members of the iOS family.

With the backup copies, you'll be able to revisit those retired apps for your devices, should anything happen to those apps. Along with the app, you can also back up your 1Password data to ensure those retired apps have something to play with.

Backing up your 1Password data

First, follow this article to back up your 1Password data, this is the most important task you should do often for your 1Password data.

Transferring the iOS apps to your computer

Once the data is safely secured on your computer, you'll then need to connect your iOS devices to your iTunes client on your computer, either the Wi-Fi or USB cord will work here.

The idea here is transferring your iOS purchases to your computer for iTunes to keep a local copy in case you're unable to install it from the App Store in the future. After that, we can copy the files to a safe place, so that you can always come back to this file.

  1. Connect your iOS devices to your iTunes client

  2. On the left sidebar of iTunes, Right-click on your iOS devices to select Transfer Purchases

  3. Once the transfers are done, click on Apps in the same sidebar

  4. From there, you can locate 1Password in two different ways:

    If you have a lot of apps, use the search field on top right (1) to quickly locate 1Password or (2) manually locate 1Password in the Apps list.

  5. Once you locate 1Password, right-click on it to select Show In Windows Explorer

  6. Windows Explorer will open with the selected 1Password app file, copy the file to a safe place and then rename the file to match the version if it doesn't have it, in this case, 1Password 3.7.ipa.

Note: If you have other 1Password apps like 1Password for iPhone in addition to 1Password for iPad instead of one 1Password Pro 3.7.ipa file, you should back up the both files and name it after the iOS device it is for such as 1Password-iPhone-3_7.ipa and/or 1Password-iPad-3_7.ipa
