How To: Open your 1Password data file with a browser

1PA.jpg

Never leave home without your 1Password data, thanks to the built-in 1PasswordAnywhere feature. 1PasswordAnywhere lets you decrypt and view your data when you are away from your Mac. You can open your data file in a modern browser, enter your master password, view any type of data, and copy it to the clipboard for pasting elsewhere. Whether you use Windows at work, Linux on campus, or another Mac while at a friend's house, 1PasswordAnywhere lets you look up the Login, Secure Note, or Credit Card you need whenever you need it.

For 1PasswordAnywhere to work, you must have access to your data file, either via the web, a copy on something like a USB flash drive, or a copy on the local computer. Dropbox, our favorite file-syncing service, is a great option. Not only can you sync your 1Password data and other files to all your other computers, but any files you store in Dropbox — including your data file — are accessible via the Dropbox website. Since your 1Password data is encrypted, you can safely "host" 1PasswordAnywhere on Dropbox and access it from any solid Internet connection. Whether you keep it in your Dropbox account or somewhere else, 1PasswordAnywhere is flexible enough to fit your needs.

Things To Know Before You Get Set Up

  • By default, your 1Password data is stored within the Library folder within your home folder. If you want to start using Dropbox, click the "Move to Dropbox" (or "Use Dropbox") button in 1Password's preferences on the General pane. Be sure to install Dropbox first. If you need help, more detailed steps are available.

  • If you want to use 1PasswordAnywhere on a USB flash drive, you should only store a copy of your data file on these external drives. You must not keep it there as your main data file.

  • If you use the much older 1Password 2 and have not yet upgraded to the Agile Keychain Format, now is the time as it is required to use 1PasswordAnywhere. Follow this guide to switch to the Agile Keychain, and be sure to do it before upgrading to 1Password 3.

Use 1PasswordAnywhere via Dropbox on the Web

  1. To move your data file to Dropbox, follow our Dropbox Syncing guide. This is a great way to prepare for 1PasswordAnywhere, and it is also our favorite method for syncing data across multiple computers and mobile devices.
  2. Log into the Dropbox website.
  3. Open the 1Password.html file inside 1Password.agilekeychain.
  4. Enter your master password and enjoy!

Use 1PasswordAnywhere on a USB Flash Drive

  1. Open the 1Password.html file inside 1Password.agilekeychain. Note that on a Mac, you will need to first right-click 1Password.agilekeychain and select "Show Package Contents" from the contextual menu.
  2. Enter your master password to unlock 1PasswordAnywhere.
  3. There is no step three. Enjoy!

Current Limitations of 1PasswordAnywhere

  • 1PasswordAnywhere requires a modern browser. Internet Explorer is not supported.
  • Starting with version 13, Firefox tightened its security on opening local files. As result, Firefox will no longer load 1PasswordAnywhere from the local file system. You can still access 1PasswordAnywhere via the Dropbox website, however.
  • File attachments are not currently available within 1PasswordAnywhere.
  • For Chrome and other troubleshooting issues, please refer to our 1PasswordAnywhere troubleshooting guide.
