Usability Question: Wallet vs. Logins vs. Accounts

<div class="IPBDescription">What's the purpose for this segregation?</div>I'm a convert from SplashID. I'm moving the data across gradually and as-needed (importing didn't work well enough). As I'm now faced on each entry with the question of where to put the data, I'm wondering if I could get some sage advice as to the differences in purpose and usefulness amongst "Logins", "Wallet", and "Accounts". 1Password wants to distinguish and I'm trying to understand why.

Thanks!

    Hi,

The Logins Vault is used for logging into websites via web browsers. It only needs the user/password to function as a Login item.

The Accounts Vault is used to store accounts information that are not used in web browsers because they are not directly related to web sites and they contain more information. Basically any accounts outside of web sites. For example, an FTP/IRC/Email account, they both have extra information required such as server addresses, ports, IMAP/POP, etc. IM accounts from Yahoo, AOL, MSN, GTalks, and others are often used via IM clients and so the information is stored in the Accounts vault to for easy access to all information for entering into the IM clients.

The Wallets Vault is used to store the information that normally appears as a card in a wallet/purse and it is also used for entering credit/debit cards for the web sites online. For example: ATM cards, driver licenses, gym memberships, Social Security cards, passport and so on.

I've hoped/waited a long time for an update to fix SplashID importer problems, older forum requests/discussions were lost, and there's no sign it'll ever happen.

    Mike,

    Thanks,

Logins clearly is the simplest place. But, how is it intended I would move something that started in Login, say Apple, and move to Accounts and take on the richer description? Or is same achieved in Logins by just adding fields?

You can add extra fields to the Logins item or you can carry the information from the Logins to the Accounts if you don't need it for logging into sites. We are getting some requests for being able to convert Logins to Accounts and vice versa, we are looking into it but I don't have any additional information on this.

I would very much like to be able to move items from one vault type to another. I imported a huge number of items from Yojimbo and they are all in Logins. This is not too bad but many of them should be Software, Accounts, or Wallet.

    Thanks,

    Hi Will,

Thanks for letting us know that such a feature would be useful to you. We are considering this in the future. For now, however, the different vaults are treated in much the same way that iTunes treats different content types (Music, Movies, Podcasts, etc.). You can't simply drag an item from one to another since the data is formatted in a different way. We are excited to tackle this problem in the future, but in the mean time items must be created anew in a different vault.

We are also looking at mass-editing features which would greatly simplify even manually re-creating items in new vaults. I don't have a time frame for a specific release, but it is on our radar.

    I hope that helps. Please let me know. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

    Cheers!

I understand that must be troublesome, though this would be a great feature to see someday.

One idea I hope you guys will consider is having unified or linked items. For example, for my checking account I actually have to have three separate sets of credentials in 1Password: one Login item (website username and password) and two Wallet items (my account/routing number and pin, and my debit card number/expiration date and pin.) While I realize it would be less secure to have all of that in one unified login item (since 1Password decrypts only the item in use, and, for example, my account number would also be decrypted even if I only needed to use my login info,) perhaps there could be a way, at least in the user interface, to view/edit all of the relevant data at once.

Please consider tags or folders to group items of different types.
  • It's interesting that this is the 4th user to request a unified record for bank accounts/logins/debit cards in the past few days (in other threads).

It has been explained that there are reasons for not doing this, but it would obviously be of benefit to de-duplicate these types of records. I hope it can be achieved.

Absolutely, Kent. Please consider previous posts as completely sincere, not just PR. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

I've got nothing to announce right now, but this is certainly on our radar.
