Incredibly Slow Initial Dropbox Sync

Sparks

<div class="IPBDescription">Title says it all...</div>The initial Dropbox sync of my 1Password files took well over ten minutes, and anything (mind you, this included closing the keyboard on my Droid) cancelled the sync operation, forcing me to return to 1Password and begin again. So after three and a half minutes of sync, I had to go back in and let it sync for another 7 minutes.

This is not an ideal initial usage experience, to say the least. Now, I recognize that my 1Password data is 3.5 years of cruft accumulated across three Macs, a Windows box, two iPhones and an iPad, so I may have a Wee Bit Of Data to sync. Still, a progress bar would've been nice, or the ability to let it continue to sync while in another task. (Or at least not to cancel when I closed the keyboard after typing in my Dropbox password.)

The app looks great now that the sync is done, but it might be worth keeping the initial Dropbox sync in mind as a place that could use some improvement. Even if you can't speed it up considerably, making it so it shows something other than just the 'File synced' notifications and instead gives some sort of progress bar or ability to do other things during the sync would be great. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

    Hi Sparks,

The speed of Dropbox synchronization depends mostly on your network and Dropbox availability.

My testing keychain (200 items default folder size > 6M, some singe files > 170K )

was consistently downloaded for 5 -6 min through Wi-Fi network. Some customers reported syncing of very large

keychains (up to 77M more than 1500 items) in reasonable time through Wi-Fi.

There may be some failures (even when you use Dropbox for Android there are some failures quite often)

related to how fast your network and most important, how busy is Dropbox Server is.

Notice that the syncing is incremental, no information will be lost,

the file you failed to get will be downloaded next time Dropbox server becomes available.

No data will be lost or overridden.

I agree that some improvements to syncing is required, some users don't appreciate too much information

presented to them and want to put the process in the background.

However, system stability is the most important thing (at least until Dropbox server increases its throughput significantly)

Therefore, it is a good idea to know what is going on behind the scenes.

Please let me know if you need more info.
