SplashID Migration - Suggestions for Improvements

1) I'm transferring a bunch of entries from SplashID to 1Password. I know you guys are working on more formats and want to add my 2¢ to speeding that up with a customizable format. The ability to customize the field names in SplashID was a great feature which I often used. I'm having to do weird things in the transfer to deal with the limited formats in 1Password Wallet. I mostly use "Memberships" and then put lots of stuff in Notes so I can figure out what the entries mean. Not very efficient. I want to quit using SplashID … I like 1Password MUCH better … but the transfer is painful. We need custom field names in the Wallet. I know you're working on it but the sooner the better!

2) One other comment: I'd like to see the iPad app have the "Folders" icon listed in the menu bar on the left. It's in the iPhone app but not on the iPad. I use the folders to organize the entries I have put in Wallet. Without being able to select Folders on the iPad, it's hard to navigate, especially since I don't see a way to use Tags in either the iPhone or the iPad. The only alternative is to manually browse the Wallet or use Search.

Incidentally, the ability to sync with DropBox was key to my decision to move everything from SplashID to 1iPassword. I had been using SplashID for lots of years, starting back in Palm days, so the decision was not an easy one.

Thanks for a great product!!!!

Comments

  • I am also a long-time Splash Id user, but I am now converting to 1Password in order to be able to sync with multiple devices using Dropbox. In my case the devices are Windows desktop, iphone, and iPad. I am trying to decide on how I should use folders and use the various templates. Here are my observations so far:

    1. The windows desktop supports folders including the All and Unassigned folders.

    2. The iphone supports folders, but doesn't include the All and Unassigned ones. I think the All folder would be the most useful one so I know don't know why it's not included.

    3. The iPad doesn't support folders currently, but I see from the FAQ that they will be in the future.

Using the "keep it simple" approach, I plan to use the generic account for everything that has a user name and password and use the notes field for all additional information. It would be nice if the generic account template had the ability to add custom field names and values the way the login templates do.

I probably will make minimal use of folders until the All Folder option is supported on all the devices.

    Any comments on this?

    Hey there,

These suggestions have all come up from time to time. Thank you for letting us know it would be useful to you! We will look into improving these features in a future update.

Part of the "pain" of importing SplashID data is actually *because of* the custom fields. It is something we are working on, but it is not easy. Unfortunately, I cannot promise any future changes to the process. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_sadsmile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-(' />

I actually don't organize my logins at all. I tried at one time, but I find myself just using the search since it is so much quicker. I usually know what site I want to visit, so just typing a couple letters of it is more my style. I very rarely *browse* my 1Password data. It's just there when I need it. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

As rolstad mentioned, though, we are looking to add folder support to 1Password for iPad.

I don't foresee custom fields happening in 1P 3.x that'll make SplashID (et.al.) imports more transparent plus other obvious advantages. After waiting this long what's a few years more? <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

To me the automatic conversion is not the primary consideratiion. I am prepared to manually convert my 150 entries. However, custom fields would make it appear cleaner on 1Password. On 1Password my generic account notes field looks like (for the 1Password entry):

    Notes:

    URL: http://agilewebsolutions.com/

    License Key: xxxxx

    Master Password: xxxxx

    iPhone unlock: xxxxx

    ipad pw: xxxxx

    desktop pw: xxxxx

That is a great example of how difficult it would be to automate the process. In that one note there are at least three different 1Password data types:

    Software License: 1Password

Secure Note: 1Password master password list

    Login: Agile Forum

It is certainly human readable, but to sort all that out into the appropriate fields in correct item types in the correct vaults would not be trivial, especially since everyone will have unique fields of their own.

I just wish SplashID had more structured data. It's not too far from just importing a word processing document someone wrote describing all their websites and logins <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' /> :
Well, I have an account on Gmail where I use the username smithjones and password j33i34kh4gfgjhs9pd8ioj. I use the same password for Facebook, but my bank's password is kjh56p4508ypothjefklj. Oh, and my username for Facebook is the same as my Gmail username. Also, I use Chase Bank.
I am certainly not saying that SplashID is "wrong" but we do things differently, so the data is just in a completely different format. 1Password has very structured data types that make importing, exporting, and exchanging 1Password data fairly straightforward.

This is in addition to the fact that this is a one time process for a very small number of 1Password users. It's not ideal, but we do what we can with the developer resources we have. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_sadsmile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-(' />

With that in mind, can you provide the exact structure of a CSV file that 1PW wants to see. I might be able to manually normalize my 1,400 records in a text editor to get 1PW to import more than 600 of them. I can't find any documentation on the IMPORT process or the format of the CSV file in the help system.

    TIA, Steve

Simply use similar fields as you see in 1Password for your CSV data, then map the fields in your CSV file to the correct fields in 1Password during import. I do not have an exhaustive list of the fields in 1Password offhand. Perhaps one of the developers may chime in.

Steve, the 1Password for Windows user's guide describes delimited text in the FAQ section pertaining to its supported import formats:
http://help.agile.ws/1Password_Windows/faq.html#delimited_text
If SplashID offers a true "export to delimited text" option with which you can choose tab, comma, or semicolon as the delimiter, that may generate a file you can import into 1Password.

That's cool for the software entries. I'll tweak the CSV out (the import is having a tough time with multi-line notes, but I'll manually tweak them to remove line feeds).

Are there similar guides for Wallet accounts, logins, and wallet "types"?

    Thanks!

I do believe that, presently, 1Password for Mac imports all data as either Logins or Secure Notes. I may be wrong, though, as I do not do a lot of importing.

It appears I cannot import to anything but Logins or Secure Notes.

Even after tweaking my SplashID export file to match the text file format that 1Password created when I exported the Software sample data. I'd like to have somebody from Agile reply with a definitive "we don't allow imports to any type other than Logins or Secure Notes" or "here's an explicit guide for how to import to other types".

Is there a way to convert a Secure Note to a wallet item? Or to a Software item? Or is this just a total waste of time. While I like the interface and iphone/ipad useability of 1PW better than SplashID, I can't imagine the time it's going to take me to manually enter all 1400 records, and will likely ask for a refund.

    Thanks,

Same here, and I'm pretty sure someone at AWS definitively stated that current limitation awhile ago.

I vaguely remember someone at AWS definitively stating that limitation awhile ago, in a topic not likely migrated to to this IPBoard forum so I'd appreciate knowing for sure now.

Certainly won't be happening with my +800 SID items.

    sparker, I hope some of this will be helpful! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />
It appears I cannot import to anything but Logins or Secure Notes.
This is mostly true. At this time 1Password supports importing data into the Logins and Secure Notes vaults. Software Licenses can be imported from LicenseKeeper and AppShelf data at this time. You can try the LicenseKeeper importer on a CSV file as per Gita's suggestion in another thread and our blog post on the topic. As Dave mentions in another thread:
Sadly, the exports for other applications vary so much that it is impossible to make a generic importer for every data type. The only thing we could do is to publish a 1Password-specific format for you to use, but then you would need to manually setup the data anyway, so the cost/reward is not very favourable.

Is there a way to convert a Secure Note to a wallet item? Or to a Software item?
Unfortunately, it is not currently possible in 1Password for Mac 3.4.4 to change vault types. I like Gita's iTunes analogy:
In your iTunes library, you have media of different types. You cannot drag a "podcast" item into "video" or "books," just as you cannot (currently) drag a login item in 1Password to the secure notes vault or some other vault. In iTunes, you can create playlists and smart playlists which can contain media of any type, just as you can create folders and smart folders in 1Password that can contain items of any type.

While I like the interface and iphone/ipad useability of 1PW better than SplashID, I can't imagine the time it's going to take me to manually enter all 1400 records, and will likely ask for a refund.
Stefan gave some advice regarding the simplification of importing over time rather than all at once:
Here's what I did when I moved to 1Password:

    1. I kept my "other" password manager (I did not uninstall it)

    2. Every time I needed to log into some website, I copied my username/password from the other password manager

    3. The 1Password auto-save prompt appears, and you create a new 1Password item

    4. After a few weeks, almost everything moved over to 1Password (thanks to the 1Password auto-save feature)

A nice side-effect of this approach is that old, obsolete login items are not transferred to 1Password. You end up with a clean, up-to-date Keychain.
Best of luck! Please let me know if there is anything else I can help with!

Surely there are others like it, an unfortunate side effect of the IP.Board migration, that aren't worth finding/updating. 'Tis a reminder that a lot of useful forum legacy is irretrievably lost, which at times is still hard for me to accept.
