1Password upgrade not working [Resolved]

<div class="IPBDescription">Did the upgrade; now unable to open the application!</div>I'm a 1Password user for about 3 years now......

I upgraded 1Password like normal when I rec'd the pop up giving me the choice to upgrade or not. When the download was complete, I then rec'd the pop up asking me if I wanted to install and relaunch or not. I clicked on the box to install and relaunch. Now I'm unable to open the application. I see that 1Password still works (I use Safari) when I want to sign into sites and I even generated a new UN/PW; however, try as I might, the application itself will not open for me.

I contacted Support and they sent a link to repeat the download process, which I did, but I'm having the same issue.

Anyone else having this issue? Any suggestions?

Here's my email thread with Agile Web Solutions:

Hi, Stu!

I'm kind of freaking out now...

I did what the email said. I was unsure what files to keep and what files to also move to trash (I got a pop up asking me when I selected "move to trash" on my current version of 1Password) so I chose "Leave Files" as I didn't want to lose any of my UN/PW information.

I have almost 300 sign-ins as well as a healthy wallet and other security info.

Is here a difference between dragging an application to trash versus right-clicking on it and selecting "move to trash"??

Anyway, I downloaded the application again, unzipped it and when I clicked on the application to open it, it still doesn't open.

It does a little bit more than what it was doing before and that is, "1Password" now shows up in the upper left-hand corner of my screen, right next to the Apple, but that's all.

Please advise!

Thanks so much! Krysta N Robinson Kvale

Hi Krysta,

Thank you for taking the time to contact us. I'm really sorry for the trouble you're experiencing after doing an automatic update.

In cases like this the best thing to do is to manually download the latest version from http://agile.ws/downloads and then reinstall. Make sure you quit any browsers and drag the current version of 1Password to the trash before installing the newly downloaded version. This won't harm any of your 1Password data as it's stored in a separate file which doesn't get touched by a reinstall.

I hope that helps. Please let me know.

Thanks!

It never relaunched. In fact, when I try to relaunch it via

Launchbar, I noticed the 1Password icon is different. Now it's a

white piece of paper (?) with the "A" in the bottom right hand corner

of the white piece of paper.

I think "A" is for "Applications"....

When I was in Safari, I signed into FaceBook using 1Password. I'm

just unable to bring up the application (like if I wanted to sign into

it to make changes and whatnot...)

Thanks!

Ok before installing the new version from the fresh download.

Quit all browsers and 1password, from there you should drag the (old) 1password app from the applications folder into the trash. Then run the new installer ie drag the (new) 1password app to the applications folder. Run 1password. Do you still receive errors ?

Edit : reread your post and see you have answered some of this already.
  • Thank you for your reply... Here's what I did:

I quit Safari (the only browser that was running) and moved the old 1Password app to the trash (right click; move to trash).

Then I downloaded 1Password again, moved the it to my applications and clicked on the icon to get it started. Nothing.

I have App Trap, so whenever I move an application to the trash, App Trap pops up and asks me if I want to move this file and/or that file to the trash too.

At first I said no, just the application. I was afraid that I would lose all my information that I have stored in 1Password.

When that didn't work, I tried it again, but this time I did move EVERYTHING to the trash. Now I not only can I *not* get the 1Password application to work, but I seem to have lost (temporarily at least) all my 1Password information!

I do back up regularly, so I hope that I'll be able to somehow restore 1Password with Time Machine? I've never restored anything before, so I hope that this works.

If not, I guess I'll have to think of another way short of rebuilding all my information with 1Password.

I've sent them a handful of emails; I'm waiting to hear back from them.

Thank you again for trying to help me.

Thank you for your reply... Here's what I did:

Well if you havent emptied the trash then we can put the passwords data file back where it belongs, with relative ease. Worse case we can try to help you retrieve it from the time machine.

Open the trash and look for a folder called 1password if you find it drag it to the desktop
once there open the folder inside you should see the agilekeychain
open a new finder window go to your user library application support folder open the 1password folder there (~/library/application support/1password)
then drag the keychain from the desktop folder into the newly opend folder
once its there double click on it
1password should ask if you want to switch to this keychain,
click yes
your passwords should be back.

you can close the finder windows, leave the desktop folder there in case you want to retrieve any keychain backups they are in the backups folder, you would simply move the backup folder to the same 1password folder as above. Finder should ask if you want to replace the folder, click yes.

As a safety precaution make sure and make a duplicate of the folder before moving it. Always have a backup <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Once we get them back we can try to tackle the other problem.
  • *SOME* Good news! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

I began to follow your directions by going into my Trash to drag the 1PW folder to desktop.

Well, what I ended up doing was getting the 1PW application to work! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />

Apparently the 1PW icon that I dragged to my desktop from the Trash must have been one of the previous attempts after downloading and nothing happened...

Anyway, now my issue is how to make the "new" 1PW application read the info from the "old" 1PW library because the "new" 1PW is completely empty.

I believe the library of sign-ins and whatnot is still in the Trash -- Would you please help me to "restore" the library to where it was?

    THANK YOU so much! KrystaK:)
  • It's only been about 90 minutes later since my last reply and I have GOOD NEWS to report! IT WORKS! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

EVERYTHING APPEARS TO BE WORKING AGAIN!!

Life is good... Thank you so much!

Believe it or not, I was crying earlier today. I had to stop and pull myself together (I watched a couple episodes of CSI on TV). I thought about and remembered the Time Machine option as well as simply rebuilding my library one at a time. That would've sucked.

I'm very happy that you were able to help me. I'm very thankful!
