question (and maybe idea) on 1Password

Hey guys,

finally found the courage to write to congratulate on an excellent product <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';-)' />

I am about to do a very very very scary thing (formatting my HDD following an i/o disk error which is slowing the Mac terribly) and was thinking about two/three things:

- is there a way to backup the 1Password data?

- is there a way to include in 1Password (and basically sync) all the data in the Keychain?

and the most crucial one....

- would 1Password be able to 'read' and store all the license keys for my apps (so in the event of a disaster one could just get the backup and get all of the serials handy)?

thanks a lot!

ale

    Yes, see here.

Not sure what you mean by this. Could you elaborate?

Don't think that 1PW can automate it in the sense that it can automatically discover the keys for all your installed software keys but you can store them in 1PW and if you already have them in a spreadsheet or something, I suspect you can automate the import from a generic text file.

If it is of any comfort, I lost my hard drive once and was forced to restore from a time capsule. 1PW just continued to work. I didn't have to do anything special. The keychain is just a collection of files that were restored like any other. Incidentally, all my software and the keys were restored too. I didn't have to enter them again.

It would do no harm to put a copy of the keychain onto DropBox or something if you are really concerned.

    Good luck with the reformat.

Hi Seven77, welcome! Thanks a lot for the great comments.

Well, Penelope did a great job of answering your questions (thanks for the assist, PP <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> ). I'll just add that when backing up your data, you could set up 1PasswordAnywhere on a flash drive (which would give you read-only access to your data) and you could also place an extra copy of your data file on the flash drive as well. That way, you would be doubly protected by having an extra copy of your keychain in case of something bad happening.

To go a step further, if you have another computer, or if you're using 1Password touch on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you can use Dropbox to sync your data so that you have full access to all your data; then, getting all the data back on that computer after your reformat would be a snap.

I hope that helps. Let us know if you have additional questions.
