Generated passwords not showing up in Generated Password

I'm just getting started with this, so maybe I'm missing something, but...
I've already created a bunch of Logins, and now I'm going through all of them one by one to generated strong passwords. That seems to be working, but for some reason when I generate a new password, the login isn't then listed in the Generated Passwords section.
Am I doing something wrong or just misunderstanding how this is supposed to work?
Thanks in advance,
paul

HI Paul
Are you simply referring to the generated password section not being shown in the 1P side bar ? Its hidden by default in the sys pref. Just trying to clarify this one. Though by your post it doesn't sound necessary. (This one has gotten a few folks)
As for the Gen PW it only records the actual password not the login details. (This is more of just a safety net in case you forget to save the login (see below))
Also the Gen PW is only saved and recorded if you click the fill button, if you copy and paste it out it is not saved.
If you click the fill button and if you dont have 1P unlocked already you will be prompted for your password.
After you fill the password with the PW Gen when you click submit on that page 1P should ask if you want to save the login, click yes
If I have missed something and at times I do Please just post back and one of us here will try to answer any questions.
1P has a little learning curve (esp if you come from robo IMO, its been several years for me since the switch) but in no time you will be chugging along like the rest of the folks.Flag 0 -
OK, that was it. If you generate a password via the password generator that comes up when you're at a login screen there's a Fill button, while if you do it from the 1P app the dialog appears to be exactly the same except "Fill" is replaced with "OK". Fill adds you pw to the generated password list, while OK does not. That's pretty wonky UI design, but at least I know why it's happening. Hopefully they'll be made consisten in a future release.
Thanks for the help.Flag 0 -
Hi Paul,
Welcome to the forum!
I think that what Tommy was saying was that the password only gets saved if you "confirm" the password by clicking either "Fill" or "Save." (I can't seem to find a dialog box that uses "OK.") If you click "Cancel," then 1Password does in fact cancel the whole operation, including the saving of the password.
1Password will automatically save any passwords you use to "Fill" out a form and, of course, those which you tell it "Save." The only way to not have a password saved is to explicitly click "Cancel."
I hope that clears up the confusion.Flag 0 -
Here's what happens for me:
Scenario 1
Go to web page's change password area (I'm using Chrome btw).
Bring up 1P, choose to generate a new password.
Dialog comes up with new password, choose Fill.
You now have a new password.
Go to 1P client, observe that the login/web site containing the newly generated password in the Generated Passwords area
Scenario 2
Open up 1P app
Select desired login
Choose Edit
Choose Generate Password, which also copies it to the clip board
Click Edit to save
Go to web site's change password area, change password using password you've saved to the clipboard
Go to 1P, observe that the login/web site containing the newly generated password is not in the Generated Passwords area.
Hope that's clear.Flag 0 -
Hm. There seems to be a step missing between "Choose Generate Password" and "Click Edit to save." I have attached a screenshot of the panel that drops down once you click the "Generate" button to the right of your password while editing a login. To move to the next step, you need to either press "Cancel" or "Save." If you press "Cancel" the password is not saved. However, if you press "Save," the password is saved as expected. Perhaps I am missing what you are saying, but to click "Edit" to save the login, you must press either "Cancel" or "Save" in this panel.
Please let me know if clicking "Save" does not actually save the password for the login.
Scenario 2 will not be reflected in the Generated Passwords section since the new password is saved in the login itself (unless you click "Cancel" which will cancel the operation and not save it anywhere).
Scenario 1 is the best choice, since you do not even have to leave the browser. The password will be saved in your Generated Passwords and you will be prompted to update your existing login.
We always recommend saving logins and updating passwords from within your browser. That way 1Password can grab the correct fields for a first-time login and generated passwords can simply update the existing login when you change them on a particular site.
I hope that clarifies the situation a bit. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />Flag 0 -

That's what I needed to know, and it explains everything.
I was going through all of my logins for the first time (around 100 of them) to generate strong passwords, so I was using the app a lot. I would anticipate that going forward I'll be doing this via the browser, so the passwords will go into the Generated Password area.
Thanks for the clarification.
