Feature Request: If tray icon enabled, don't close 1Password

If "show 1 Password icon in the notification area" is enabled in the preferences, i would prefer, that 1 Password would be minimized to that icon (or to an invisible window) instead of beeing closed when clicking on the "x" in right upper corner.

To close the application, a right - click context menu can be used containing "Close 1Password"

It would also be fine, if we had the option "start 1 Password with windows / logon" in conjunction.

Thank you very much for the great work so far.

Best regards

Thomas

The X button is for closing a window, not minimizing it.

To minimize the 1Password window (whether to the task bar or to the system tray) please click the minimize button. It's the one that looks a bit like an underscore.

Stefan reminds us, in another thread, that you can simply put 1Password in the Startup folder.

I agree, it's the most common behavior for most of the other apps..

    Hi,

    i know how to minimize a windows application <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

However i think (as Cimpr also acknowledges) that it is common for windows applications staying in the tray bar, that they continue staying in the tray even if the main application window "closes". (It is up to you, if you define the main application window as "closed" or "minimized" or "invisible" while the tray icon stays in tray)

I also know about the ability to put an application to the Auto start folder.

But therefore this is a "Feature request" not a bug report, to help improving the usability <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

    Best regards

  • Has any more thought been given to this feature request?

The entire point of having 1Password minimize to the tray (even when we "Close" the window with the X button) is so we don't have to retype the master password each time we need a password. There's been some discussion on Windows standards, but in Windows it has always been that the X button closes the window only, not necessarily the entire application. The X button on a window should not terminate the tray icon or background process.

I hope you add this feature, as 1Password is a great program, and the best cross-platform password solution that I've come across that allows me to share passwords between OS X, Windows, and iPhone.

Typically, closing the last window opened by a Windows program has the effect of terminating the program. You can obseve that behavior with Internet Explorer and Firefox, to name a couple of closely related examples.

It happens that 1Password has only one window that can be open, so closing it also terminates the program. (The option to "Show 1Password icon in the system tray" should probably be labeled "Minimize 1Password to the system tray" because that's how it actually works.)

I understand that the rules are a little different for programs that are intended to be left open all the time (not the intended model for 1Password, by the way), and we may change the current behavior in a future release.

For now, though, there's a quite easy solution: don't close the 1Password window if you want to keep it running; just minimize it.

Regardless of whether you minimize it to the system tray or to the task bar, the auto-lock settings in 1Password preferences will still control the locking behavior.

    Thanks for your patience.

I understand, but those really aren't comparable examples. I have about half a dozen tray applications that stay resident in memory and are there when I need them including Dropbox, Keepass 2(!!!), and others. Those programs don't terminate (if I've enabled the option) when I close them. I've used every version of Windows (except for Windows ME) for the last twenty years, and while I wouldn't describe anything as "standard," the preponderance of programs that use a tray icon, do so specifically so the program doesn't ever fully close.

That's the problem (or MY problem!) I've got to unlearn years of behavior for one application...when I'm done with a window, I close it. But in the case of 1Password, I'd like that tray icon to still be there, so I can bring the application back without having to retype the master password.

Anyway, thanks for listening. I know you've probably got more pressing fixes with the Windows Beta, but there are probably a few of us who'd appreciate you considering this. It seems like a reasonable compromise between the functionality that we get on OS X via secure keychains, and the limitations of Windows regarding the same.

The problem is that 1Password wasn't intended to be left running in the background all the time...especially unlocked, which would circumvent the security measures like auto-lock. Instead, after receiving a few heartfelt requests to help conserve space on the task bar, Stefan added the option to minimize 1Password to the tray, rather than to the task bar. He didn't change it to run as a "background" task like Dropbox or even our browser extensions (which do stay running, by the way, providing immediate access to 1Password through the 1P button in the browser toolbars).

So, you're not really forced to learn a new behavior so much as a more accurate recognition of 1Password. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />

Seriously, though—I don't honestly know what it would take to change the current behavior, but I assure you it's being considered.

    Thanks again for your patience!
  • Thanks. I know this isn't your highest priority, but I appreciate the response.

  • I agree with thomasneumann. I was (and I am) very dissapointed becouse of this behavior of 1Password.

I know, that in Apple Mac OS it is little different than on Windows, but if I have application in tray panel, than it is very usefull to have a chance minimize application after click on close (cross) button. This is standard behavior for many applications.

Wallet can lock, it is ok. But if I want to show 1Password I no need to go on scrreen or start panel.

Yes on Windows 7 I have opportunity to pin 1Password down to main panel, but i have there 14 icons and I dont want to add more.

And in Firefox with new version I have problem with autologin on shortcut (my shortcut is CTRL+Q) if I have 2 login on that website, 1Password will not give me options to choose login now, and I dont know why. Before update it works perfectly and on sites, where I have 2 stored logis give me option befor autosubmit.

Welcome to the forum, janac.marek, and thanks for sharing your preferences with us!

Please understand that the 1Password icon in the system tray is not designed to behave like the "no-window" programs you may have there. It's just an alternative to the task bar as a place for 1Password to "rest" when you minimize it. Closing the 1Password window still quits 1Password, as is the case with the majority of Windows programs. We added it for folks who explained that their task bars are already full and requested a small icon in the system tray as a space-saving measure.

We may be able to expand 1Password's use of the system tray (a.k.a. notifications area) in some future release, but I don't know of any scheduled effort to do so.
