Hi Jesper,
The backup system within 1Password creates a copy of your active 1Password data file and stores this in a folder on your local drive. If you use Apple's Time Machine this data will automatically be backed up, unless you've excluded the folders, the same would go for online backup solutions such as Crashplan, Mozy and Backblaze. We don't allow the backups to be directly stored on a removable drive as there's no way for us to mount this drive if it isn't currently mounted, and therefore a backup file wouldn't be created.
Of course, if you want extra online backup peace of mind we highly recommend the free and secure Dropbox service if you don't already use this. Not only will it backup your data but it allows you to access your 1Password data anywhere using 1PasswordAnywhere, and also easily sync with multiple iOS, Mac, Windows and even Android devices.
