1Password on iPhone/iPad not able to locate Dropbox keychain

Hello Support,

So I'm trying to get 1Password going between my Mac, iPhone and iPad with Dropbox sync. Running 3.4.4 on the Mac, 3.5.2 on iPad and iPhone. Application started on the Mac, and got a few minimal login entries saved. Did a "move" of the keychain file to my Dropbox user, however neither the iPhone or iPad are able to locate it when following the menus under "Dropbox sync". Login to Dropbox is successful, and then it errors out w cannot locate the 1Password file.

I have tried to move the keychain file to the root level of my dropbox, or in a subfolder, makes no difference. The shortcut file that should be created at the the root level mentioned in some other posts is not created in my Dropbox, as far as I can tell (checked the root folder on the dropbox website, and nothing is visible there...)

What am I doing wrong, please help! Thanks.

Brgds, Peter

    Hey premster,

Welcome to the forums! I'm sorry you are having this problem.

The data file should be moved within 1Password for best results. No matter, though. We'll get it worked out. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

First, quit 1Password on your Mac. Then, make sure your data file is named 1Password.agilekeychain and is where you would like it to be in your Dropbox folder — subfolders are just fine! — and then double-click it in Finder. This will launch 1Password and recreate the .ws.agile.1Password.settings file that needs to exist in order for the iOS apps to find your data file. Please do not modify, move, or delete this file. It will be hidden in Finder but visible via the Dropbox website.

You should be able to reset Dropbox syncing on your iOS devices (Settings > Sync > Dropbox > Account > Reset) and be up and running in no time.

Please let me know how it goes. Thanks!
  • Hi Khad,

Thanks for the reply. I tried to follow your instructions, but it still was not creating the .ws file. On a hunch, I noticed my dropbox folder on the Mac was named "dropbox" rather than "Dropbox". So I renamed it to Dropbox with a capital D, let dropbox finish chewing on it (it re-indexed) then retried open from finder as you described - voilà, the .ws file was created and all is well in 1password land. As you know dropbox allows you to name the root whatever you like, and I must have chosen to have it all lower case when I set it up way back when. Evidently 1Password depends on the file path containing Dropbox exactly so to create the bits needed for iOS sync to work... not the most elegant design (test all boundary conditions!) but I understand its one way to make it just-work in majority of cases. Anyway my problem is solved, thank you, and hope this helps someone else.

The name of your Dropbox folder on you Mac makes no difference. My Dropbox folder is actually called "dropbox." <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

As long as you are actually using the data file you think you are using by double-clicking it in Finder and selecting "Yes" when 1Password asks you to use that data file, the .ws.agile.1Password.settings file will be automatically created when 1Password runs on your Mac which will let the iOS apps find the data file wherever it is in your Dropbox folder.

Thanks for letting me know that everything is working well again. That's great! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

By all means, rename your Dropbox folder back to "dropbox" if you prefer, just locate your data file in Finder and double-click it afterwards.

Opening the data file in Finder is important because sometimes, we think 1Password is seeing what we are seeing but it is not. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';-)' />
  • Interesting, and bizarre. I tried for a couple of hours without success before I posted here, using "move" from inside 1password and it did not create the .ws file, and failed from both iPhone/iPad. After your reply, tried double clicking frm Finder and still no change (it did not ask for a "yes"?). Renaming the root to Dropbox, obviously triggered something, because when double click open next time the file was created (still no question dialog afaik...). Anyway works for me, and if it was not foldername sensitive then it was something else that was keeping it from moving on. Cheers, it works great now. Brgds, Peter.

    Dear support,

my issue seems to be very close to the issues of the other users in this thread

1Password on Mac is version 3.5.2

    1Password on iphone is 3.5.2

the file "1Password.agilekeychain" has been saved in the folder "Dropbox/agile"

I double-click and the mac 1Password starts without problems, but i do not see the file ".ws.agile.1Password.settings" been created.

In consequence the iphone application errors w "cannot find 1Password data file in Dropbox ..."

    Any help appreciated.

    Kind regards

Welcome to the forums, Tilman. I'm sorry you're having this problem.

Please ensure that the data file in your Dropbox folder is called "1Password.agilekeychain" and double-click it to activate it in 1Password. There is a slight chance that your active data file is actually located elsewhere on your hard drive.

If you are still having trouble, could you please email us your Diagnostics Report? This will help us track down the issue more quickly. You can generate the report from 1Password on your Mac by clicking the Help > Troubleshooting > Diagnostics Report... menu item and then sending the report to us at support@agile.ws using Mail.

Please include a link to this thread in your email message so that we can 'connect the dots'.
but i do not see the file ".ws.agile.1Password.settings" been created.

The easiest place to see the file is via the dropbox website. Its hidden on your Mac, just in case you didn't know it was a hidden file on the Mac.
