Suggestion Different network locations change keychain settings

I've searched around and haven't seen this requested elsewhere. If I just missed it, my apologies.

I have two different network locations, home and work. Would it be possible for 1Password to recognize which location I'm currently using and adjust the lock settings for that location?

For example, when I have "Network Location" set to "home" the keychain lock settings might be set to only lock when the computer goes to sleep since working from home is typically much safer. But when I go to work and change the network location to "work" the keychain lock settings would automatically change to something much more secure. Of course different people would have different preferences, but this would be a big time-saver for me and I wouldn't have to remember to go back and make the settings more secure when I get to the office.

If this isn't possible (and I really have no idea if it is or not), does anyone know of a workaround that could at least duplicate this?

Cheers,

Paul

I think that the best option right now is to use NetworkLocation. There is a 1Password plugin for NetworkLocation that can control your keychain Autolock settings or even lock the keychain for you.

    I hope that helps.

    Jamie,

Thanks for those links, I wasn't aware of that program. I'll be sure to check it out.

May I just add it works great, I use it all the time while traveling.

It changes the lock settings for 1pw etc

But I use it to auto play itunes when it connects to a net other than mine or the office. It also can change default printers, and set the ip based upon your choice dhcp or static. This works really well for home (static) and traveling (dhcp). You may also wish to try the adium plug in where it controls the name, and availability etc. Plus many other options.

If you visit there page and cannot locate the plugin section look on the right hand side towards the bottom it says extras, click that and it will open up the section you need. This will also get you into the section for all of the plugins.

Edit Well looks like the guys here changed the blog to include the above statements about accessing the plugins, it wasnt the same a very long time ago (doh)

If you want to know any other things from a user stand point just sent me a pm and Ill try to help if you have any questions etc. I honestly don't think you will, as it is very self explanatory. But just in case you do....

If you need support from the guys at NetworkLocation, Rick is a really great guy and from the emails I sent / received he does most of the tech support.

Oh Jamie, I knew when I clicked on the link you would be the one to have already answered this question. The master is quick on his feet and walks thru the night without making a sound.

LOL, Tommy. The Network Location plugin was my baby, so I love telling people about it. I've been using NetworkLocation for a long time and it's one of my favorite apps without 1Password control so with it… ;) Of course, now that I'm on Snow Leopard full time, I miss it quite a bit as it's not yet compatible. I'm sure they'll get there though. You're right. Rick is a great guy and very helpful. Their team is even smaller than ours so it's impressive to say the least. If you haven't tried out their new brainchild yet, have a look at Bodega.

    Jamie,

The last I tried, your great 1PW plugin for Network Location would not work with 1PW 3. Has it been updated to work or is there any prospect of it being updated?

    Hi Rick,

Hmm… this is something Jamie would love to look at I'm sure, since NetworkLocation now supports Snow Leopard. We may have a look at this in the future, but at the moment, we have a lot on our plate.

    Thanks for the heads up!

    Rick,

It should be working Jamie submitted to centrix (network location) a long time ago. At least thats what he told me. I am using it currently.

Just checked its settings, The only thing that shows up for me though is lock keychain, and not the locking time. Either I need an update or is this what you were referring to. Thanks for the post I need to check on mine, now.

Edit I just downloaded it again and the only option is still to lock the keychain.

Thanks for bringing this up i had all my stuff set for a very long time so I never really paid any attention to it lately. I do have a really short time on my screensaver lock etc, so thats why I didn't notice it.

Oh, sorry about that Rick, I didn't test it; I just assumed that you had tried and it didn't work.

There's also Airport Location , currently in active pre-1.0 development and free (at least for now). No experience with it; I've just noticed a lot of updates recently posted on MacUpdate.

Thanks for the heads up about Airport Location. I LOVE NetworkLocation since Jamie turned me on to it a month of so ago. It has been sooo handy going between my 3 primary sites.

I just tested things out and confirmed that things are working for me as expected. I was able to set the lock keychain action and modify the autolock settings as well. Confirmed that the actions were actually firing and locking 1Password or changing the settings as appropriate. Can you guys elaborate about what's not working for you? Maybe some screenshots or a quick screencast (QuickTime X, Jing, ScreenFlow, whatever your weapon of choice) could help clarify things…

    Hey Jamie

When I install via a new download directly from the extras page at NL.

The install goes as expected but I only have the option to lock nothing else.

Edit : Incidentally if I recall this is the same behavior that was exhibited before you upgraded the plugin to work with 1P3. When trying to use the old 1P2 plugin, I wonder if the centrix guys updated the download or not.

If you want to send me the plugin I can host it on my dropbox for all the folks to grab. Just let me know. We could also attach it to the forums via a zip or something.

I do know when I tried the beta of it everything worked as planned but since then I spilt that glass of tea on the old macbook and then had to reinstall on my current one, so maybe something happend then as I wanted to make sure I grabbed a current copy of all my apps. After all new macbook might as well get it just so. ;-)

Jamie I can confirm that there is something wonky with the fresh download I archived that beta copy I just installed it (just got home) and I have all functions available to me again. (clap)

Maybe time to call Rick and check on the download for freshness.

Just wanted to update this thread as the one at GS didnt get moved over. Jamie it looks like everything is working properly AFAICT.

One other tidbit, rick the other evening told me that they are working on NL v4. I hope you will be on top of any needs we may have for the plugin. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':P' />
