Dropbox sync keeps failing

Hi there,

I installed 1Password on my Mac and on my iPhone only days ago. 1Password runs perfectly on the Mac but on the iPhone I am having trouble syncing with my Dropbox account. It keeps starting but then it stops, telling me "Dropbox sync failed to obtain the list of remote data objects". I have tried a reset but this didn't solve the issue. Could it have to to with the lovacion of the 1Password-file in my Dropbox (I didn't put it on top of my folder-hierarchy in my Dropbox but placed it as a sub-folder of a sub-folder there).

Thanks for any help.

Regards,

Aloc

    Hey Aloc,

I missed your welcome in the other thread in which I replied to you, so I will say it here: Welcome to the forums! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

First, backup your 1Password data. Now, please try deleting 1Password from your iPhone, rebuilding your data file on your Mac (Help > Troubleshooting > Rebuild Data File…), and then reinstall 1Password.

From here, Dropbox syncing should proceed as expected. Please let me know how it goes.

    Hi!

I have the same problem and I can't solve it the way you proposed. Here's what I do:

    1. Create New Keychain using trial version of 1Password for Windows in Dropbox folder;

    2. Enable Dropbox Sync in 1Password on iPad (latest version of app, iOS 3.2.1)

    3. The first time it syncs OK

    4. Then I close and open the app again and when trying to sync it gives "Dropbox sync failed to obtain the list of remote data objects."

If I repeat these steps, it will behave the same.

Any thoughts on this will be highly appreciated <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
  • I have the same problem, but it's compounded by the issue that I regularly enter password information into my 1Password apps on my iPhone, iPad, and the Mac application as well. Since I don't know when the sync started failing, I have a specific concern that backup and restoring the database from any device might overwrite changes I made in another device when I restore them. Am I realistically facing losing data?

Incidentally, I've paid Agile quite a bit of money to make sure the various versions of 1Password work happily in tandem. I understand that you recommend regular backups and restores, but if you can't guarantee the products will work seamlessly the way they're supposed to without reinstalling, you have a responsibility to your customers to tell them that. You obviously know how sensitive the information is that your products are meant to work with, so I'm sure you also realize the potential breach in trust that happens when the synchronization breaks. Some guidance in advance of a problem like this (or indeed, in response, since this issue was originally raised in November 2010) would be much appreciated.

2 Questions from me based upon my personal experience

1 are you using an airport extreme or time capsule running Apples latest firm ware (7.5.2) I experienced the same type of thing after updating I had to roll back to 7.4.2

2 try connecting via 3G I have experienced the same type of thing while traveling. I must be how things are setup on the wifi I am using as I have no trouble on my own net other than above.

I am not sure what you mean by regular restores I have been using the same keychain without the need for a restore in over a year well since early beta maybe even alpha stage of 1P3. I have had to reinstall the app becasue of a wonked download but not the keychain.

Yeah, I can't quite figure out what went wrong there, but I managed to isolate the problem to some kind of discrepancy in the "contents.js" file in the data directory, which evidently caused the creation of a conflicting "contents.js" file. It appears to have happened while I was using the Mac version, not the iPhone or iPad version, but the iPhone and iPad were unable to sync thereafter, though there was no report of an error or conflict or anything. I found out by going to the sync page in the 1Password app where I got the error listed by the IP in this thread.

To solve, all I ended up doing was moving the original "contents.js" file elsewhere and replacing it with the conflicted "contents.js" file, and everything is back to normal now.

What I think might have been helpful is if 1Password had prominently notified me that there was a problem, instead of leaving it for me to sleuth out. As it was, I had to do a bit of digging to root out the issue. God forbid this had happened to someone who lacked the wherewithal to properly investigate.

Quick question, thightower: why would your network setup affect how 1Password interfaces with Dropbox?

I am like you I dunno I just noticed it when I couldn't get my iPhone to connect. I even reinstalled 1P but remembered my upgrade of the Airport once I downgraded I had no issues. It has to be something in regard to how the wifi is setup I have specifically had this issue when traveling and staying at DaysInn's once I switch back to 3G no problem with the sync. So now Isync once leaving the hotel or before returning and if there just a quick turn off of the wifi and sync then back on.

    Just my personal experience.
