What are tags?

I tried to do a search here for "What are tags?" but couldn't find a way of making the word "tags" any longer than four characters... which the search software appears to require.

    Welcome to the 1password forums,

Tags are keywords of your own choice to help you organize your items, they are much less stringent than folders as an item can have multiple tags where in folders it will only appear once under one particular folder. I prefer the flexibility of tags myself.

In a search you can either click on the tag in the sidebar to reveal all items with that tag or you can type the name in the search filed what ever you prefer.

Hope that helps you out some.

Consider an item in the real world. You write your password on a piece of paper and put some of those color-coded tags on the paper. You can only place the paper in one file folder at a time, but it can be tagged with as many color-coded indicators as your heart desires. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

The cool thing about software is that, unlike the real world, you can make 1Password show you all the items with a particular tag without having to go through each folder — or the single stack if, like me, you don't use folders — and look for the tags yourself. It's kind of like having a personal assistant you can tell to go through all your files and bring you all the red-tagged items, and your assistant will also put them back where they were when you are done. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='B)' />
