dropbox setup password lockout
hi. i've been using 1password for my iphone. now i have an ipad so i want to sync the data. i have dropbox setup.
here is the problem:
when i am in 1password on my iphone, using the dropbox sync setup, i was asked for "master password on iphone." i tried both pw to unlock 1password and for my iphone -- neither worked. now after 10 attempts, i cannot turn on the setup anymore to use dropbox.
what password is it looking for? and how can i reset the lockout?
thx

Hi willnight,
Welcome to the forums!
There are a lot of passwords and codes to keep track of. (That's why you probably bought 1Password in the first place. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />) I'll give a list of the ones common to this situation.
iOS device passcode - used to unlock your iPhone or iPad when first turning it on
This is unrelated to 1Password, but you will obviously need it in order to access your iOS device if you have it enabled (which we strongly recommend).
1Password for iPhone unlock code - used to unlock 1Password for iPhone and gain access to low-security items and settings
This makes it easier to switch back and forth between apps without having to type in a longer, more complicated master password every time.
1Password for iPhone master password - used to gain full access to all 1Password for iPhone data
You will be prompted whenever you are trying to access a high-security item (beyond the Auto-Lock timeout duration) or a setting that requires further authentication. Called "Master Password for iPhone" during Dropbox setup.
1Password for iPad master password - used to gain full access to all 1Password for iPad data
You will be prompted for this every time you launch 1Password for iPad.
Dropbox password - used to login to the Dropbox application and website
This is only related to 1Password insofar as it is required to access your data file for Dropbox-based syncing.
1Password data file master password - used to gain full access to 1Password for Mac and/or Windows and 1PasswordAnywhere
This can be thought of as the "main" password. All your data can be accessed with this password. Even if you lose your iOS device(s), you can set up Dropbox syncing on a new device using this data file and password. You are only prompted to enter it on your Mac or Windows computer and when accessing 1PasswordAnywhere. If your 1Password for iOS master password is different than this password, you will be prompted to enter it when setting up Dropbox syncing on your iOS device, otherwise, you will not be prompted for this anywhere in 1Password for iOS. Called "Master Password on Mac or PC" during Dropbox setup.
All of these passwords are set independently, so it is up to you if they are all identical or unique. We recommend always using unique passwords for everything, but the choice is yours.
If you have entered an incorrect 1Password for iPhone unlock code when opening 1Password for iPhone, there is a timeout displayed on the screen: "Wrong Unlock Code: Please try again in 1 minute." The timeout duration increases with further failed attempts.
If you have entered an incorrect iOS device passcode, there is a different timeout displayed on the screen: "iPhone is disabled try again in 1 minute." This timeout duration increases with further failed attempts as well.
1Password for iPhone Dropbox setup will not "lock you out" — I was able to get up to about 100 failed "Master Password on iPhone" attempts just now in the Dropbox setup — so perhaps I have misunderstood your query.
Please let me know. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />
Thanks!

when i first tried to sync, i got to the settings > sync > dropbox sync (screengrab posted), and then clicked the on/off switch. it turned on and asked for "master password on iphone." i thought it was the same for the 1password app: wrong. then i tried different 4-digit passcodes that i know, including my iphone passcode. all eleven times (<img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_tongueout.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-P' />) failed -- some attempts i repeated with same passcode to make sure i didn't type it wrong.
now when i get to the same dropbox sync screen to set it up, it just bounces back to the off position when i click the on/off. i cannot go any further. (this is what i meant by it locking me out -- maybe it's not, but rather just a bug?)Flag 0 -
It sounds like you may not know your 1Password for iPhone master password. Your master password is known only by you, and we cannot reset it for you; if we could, that would be a security hole that criminals could use to steal your data. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_sadsmile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-(' />
If you cannot remember the password, you will need to reset your master password on your iPhone. Navigate to Settings > Security and tap Reset Master Password. Note that any entries that were previously protected by the master password will be permanently lost.
If you reset the database there are a few ways to retrieve your data after the reset:
* Set up Dropbox syncing again in the reinstalled app, and your data will start syncing to your iPhone automatically. Please see this guide for instructions on how to set this up if you need any assistance:
http://help.agile.ws/1Password3/cloud_syncing_with_dropbox.html
* If you've previously synced your 1Password data with 1Password for Mac, you can easily restore your data during the next Wi-Fi sync:
http://help.agile.ws/1Password3/sync_to_iphone.html
* If you've used the built-in "backup and restore" feature to save a backup copy of your 1Password data, you can use it again to restore that saved backup file. You can read more about our backup and restore option here:
http://help.agile.ws/1Password_touch/backup.html
Please let me know how it turns out.

so there is the unlock code, and then there is the master password.
i know both, and i was able to change the master password. this did not delete my data since i did not protect any of my data with a master password (i felt the unlock code was enough. i figure if someone can crack that, i must be *really* important, and i deserve to have my personal info pirated <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_tongueout.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-P' />)
going forward, i think i will protect the data with the master password... just for measure... in case i were *really* important. lol
we are now back to the dropbox sync setup screen. still "locked out," still bouncing back to "off."
any other idea? like is there away to reset the app, which may or may not re-activate/enable the dropbox sync.

See my question below before doing a reinstall. thx
Uninstall and then reinstall the app,
press and hold the 1P icon till it wiggles then select the x in the corner to delete the app and its data. (see next sentence)
(for others who may find this thread)
Make sure to use the apps backup function as a safety net just incase you don't have DropBox setup yet, so you have a backup of your data and don't accidentally wipe out all your data. Read more in khad's previous post , Obviously people who already have a working sync solution from the Mac or Windows desktop apps could possibly forgo this step <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> but as always a backup never hurts as a good friend says Disk space is cheap cough Dave Cough
either download again from the app store or reconnect to itunes and install the app again. From this point you can set new unlock codes and or passwords for the app just like, you just purchased it.
From there run the dropbox setup again.
Did I say Make a backup, after all Murphy was an optimist. Plus you may have entries on the phone that are not on your Mac etc and this would preserve that data just in case. Better safe than sorry.
One question tho, Do you have the 1password for Mac or Windows or are you starting from an iphone only ? Sorry I came in late and didnt see it mentioned. The reason I ask is I don't recall if the sync has been allowed to originate from just the iPhone yet. Last I remember the sync portion had to be setup by the Mac or Windows client. This scenario could explain the errors you are receiving.

Wow. Tommy, how did I miss that? <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
Syncing definitely needs to be set up first from within 1Password for Mac or 1Password for Windows at this time. Even if you are only planning on syncing two iOS devices, the capability to initially set up Dropbox syncing is not yet available in the iOS apps. Do you have a 1Password.agilekeychain file already in your Dropbox folder, willknight? Setting up Dropbox syncing requires a data file present in your Dropbox folder.
You can download a trial version of either the Mac or Windows application to do the initial setup. Afterwards, we think you will love it enough to buy it, but you are, of course, not obligated to keep it installed for any reason. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />
I think Tommy has come to the rescue and given some great advice here! I'm hopeful.
Please don't leave us in suspense! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_bigsmile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-D' />Flag 0 -
here is what i've learned:
- previous poster's, thightower, suggestion to delete then reinstall did reset 1password app (as if were loaded for the first time: set up lock code and master password, and there is no data whatsoever.) so, yes, this will purge any existing data. back up one way or another so that previous data can be reimported. I did <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';-)' />
- once the app is reset, my issue went away: no more getting stuck at the on/off for dropbox sync. I was able to proceed to the next step.
- i was aware that 2 devices (ie ipad and iphone) cannot share 1password data directly; there needs to be a medium -- 1) a mac with wifi (not sure if pc works too because that's not my set up) or 2) dropbox (again here, not aware of similar products but that's what i'm trying out right now).
- 1password needs to be installed on individual devices. when I got my ipad and sync'd 1password that I got for my iphone, I was pleasantly surprised that it opened up looking like it was written for the ipad. in other words, i got one copy of 1password and it worked "natively" (and beautifully) on both devices; i didn't have to buy an ipad version (which i had to with some apps i like on my iphone-- grrr). thank you, agile <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />
- both 1password and dropbox need to be installed on the computer.
- from there, it was a matter of following the directions for syncing: you can either use dropbox or wifi; one will disable the others.
i was successful with the wifi route. it was seamless and so easy that it made me worry a bit: could 1password be so easy, but at the same time powerful enough to protect my data?
anyway, i will try the dropbox solution and keep you posted.Flag 0 -
Hi willnight, thanks for posting the info about what you've learned. I'm sure that will be helpful to others. We're pleased that you were happy about our universal 1Password touch app. Open it on iPhone, looks like iPhone apps...open it on iPad, looks like iPad app <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' /> I'm like you...I wish all the apps were universal.
Please let us know how it goes after you give the Dropbox method a try. If you need any help along the way, just send us an email. We're always happy to help you. Cheers!Flag 0
