I can't open 1password.html through my Dropbox using my iPhone. Is there any error or?

To add on, when I saw the error page, I clicked on the "key data file" as directed by the troubleshooting guide. But nothing is happening. I checked my Dropbox and I don't see anything that isn't synced. Any help will be appreciated.

That's correct, Vincent. The HTML viewer built into the Dropbox app is known to be unable to display 1PasswordAnywhere or to respond to the "key data file" link in the error message that appears.

You should be able to open 1PasswordAnywhere in Mobile Safari, though, and in the HTML viewer built into the 1Password app.

    I hope that helps.

I had managed to open the 1Password file using the web version of Dropbox. However, I can't get it to reveal my password. I guess it does not work smoothly in iOS yet?

Viewing 1PasswordAnywhere on my private Dropbox site, using either Mobile Safari or the browser built into the 1Password app, I'm not able to reveal or copy obscured (dots) passwords in my Login items, either.

I'm moving this thread to the 1Password for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad forum, in hopes that one of my coworkers there can tell us whether this is a known issue.

    Thanks, db! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

Unfortunately, Vincent, at this time, 1PasswordAnywhere is only supported in modern desktop browsers like Safari, Firefox, and Google Chrome. We do not support mobile browsers (even Mobile Safari, hence the iOS apps).

1PasswordAnywhere makes liberal use of features provided by modern browsers (which is why even IE8 is still not supported yet, but that's another story).

I'm sorry I don't have a better answer for you at this time, but I hope that helps clarify the current situation.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I guess I just have to wait it out.

Another question, does that mean my problem will be solved if I purchase 1Password for iPhone? I don't really get it but if I purchased 1Password for my iPhone, how does it connect to the data I have in Dropbox?

    I'm currently using the PC.

Hi Vincent and thanks for the nice comments about our support. I'm glad we've been able to help. I just wanted to add just a bit of info for you. First of all, the 1Password app will definitely take care of your issues. Folks report sporadic performance because they're trying to use 1PasswordAnywhere from the mobile Dropbox app, and it's not meant to be used that way. The reason is because 1PasswordAnywhere expects to have access to *all* of the data, and it doesn't get that from the mobile Dropbox app which only downloads pieces of data selectively. A common misconception of the Dropbox app on the mobile platform is that it works like the desktop Dropbox client: constantly keeping everything synced. That's not their mobile app model: files have to be expressly downloaded/updated to be in sync. 1PA needs to have everything in the data file to be downloaded and that's just not a guarantee in the current Dropbox mobile apps.

As noted previously, accessing 1PasswordAnywhere directly from your Dropbox web site login from other mobile browsers is likely to not work, as mobile apps tend to not have as many enabled features as desktop browsers do.

I hope that helps clear things up a bit. I'll look forward to hearing back from you after you get 1Password installed on your iPhone to let us know what you think about it. Cheers <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
  • 1PasswordAnywhere is GREAT!!! with one exception... When viewing the detail pane of a "Login" item - Consider replacing the "reveal" hover action with a button instead. This seems to be the only UI action that prevents it from being 100% compatible with Mobile Safari browser (iphone, ipad). any chance this is in the works???

  • I am new to 1Password3. I installed it on my macbook last night, loaded in a lot of info, then went to preferences and moved the keychain to dropbox. I have a pc at work, and an iphone and ipad and want to use my logins and cc info. I waited for the green check box, and went to my ipad to launch dropbox. i got that error message "problem loading 1password data file." i clicked on the "key data file" that was in red for more info, and nothing happens. I went to the support site, and see that this is a common error but no info there as to how to fix it. i was playing around with the files on my macbook and then all of a sudden everything i had loaded was gone! so i had to start all over. needless to say this is frustrating. so again i load a lot of info, move it to dropbox via 1password's preferences, wait for the green check box and the exact same error message appears. now what???

also, i have seen here that people use the finder to create a 1password file in their dropbox instead of just having the chain sitting there. i would like to do that as well, but am afraid to touch anything!!

    thanks for the help.

Hello robinzd, and welcome to the Forums!

I'm sorry you're having issues with using 1Password. Specifically, I'd like to address the issue you encountered on your iPad.
I waited for the green check box, and went to my ipad to launch dropbox. i got that error message "problem loading 1password data file." i clicked on the "key data file" that was in red for more info, and nothing happens.
From your comment, it appears that you did not purchase/install the 1Password app (located in iTunes) on your iPad.

The short answer is: Accessing 1Password through the Dropbox folder on an iOS device will not work.

You will need to purchase the iOS version of 1Password to access your data on your iPhone or iPad.

Please see the following post for more details: Use of 1Password in iPhone through Dropbox

Based on your description of the problem, I believe you are attempting to use the 1PasswordAnywhere function by clicking on the .html file in your Dropbox folder. You will certainly see the error message you described above.

To confirm this is the case, please try to access 1Password on your iPad as you did before, and do the following:

Press and hold the "key data file" message, eventually you will be given an option to "Copy". I replicated the error on my iPad just now and copied/pasted the info into a note. My file name was "file///var/mobile/Applications/.../encryption.js" If you see something similar, then that should confirm that the method you are trying will not work at this time. (I added some info about the 1P iOS apps and a link at the bottom of this message.)
i was playing around with the files on my macbook and then all of a sudden everything i had loaded was gone! so i had to start all over. needless to say this is frustrating. so again i load a lot of info, move it to dropbox via 1password's preferences, wait for the green check box and the exact same error message appears. now what???

Regarding Dropbox troubleshooting, I am a recent new Dropbox user myself, so I will wait for an AB staff member or Forum member to chime in. I have some ideas of what to do, but I would rather not advise you to do anything that I'm not sure won't cause further problems. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Somebody will be along soon. Don't worry.

    Brandt

P.S. If you decide to purchase the 1Password app for your iOS devices, I recommend 1PasswordPro (1P iTunes link). There are separate stand alone versions for the iPhone and iPad, and the only differences between the three is that the Pro version includes both the iPhone and iPad version. There is no functional difference. Think of Pro as getting a discount for buying both at one time. I use Pro on both iOS devices and it works great...especially with Dropbox!
  • thanks for the reply. you are right, i haven't purchased the pro yet for my ipad and my iphone. i was trying to use the 1PasswordAnywhere function -- i thought i could do that just to see the passwords on other devices without having purchased the software. I don't understand why the 1PasswordAnywhere function doesn't work...it doesn't say anywhere that you can't use it on an ipad or iphone to see logins -- i thought you could see them, copy and paste them?

    thanks.
  • i am new to 1password, and am attempting to use 1passwordanywhere on my ipad. is this possible? or does 1passwordanywhere only work on another mac or pc? and not on iphones or ipads without purchasing thru itunes? i thought i could access my logins on those devices but wouldn't be able to add anything???

We did not discuss which desktop browsers will or won't work with 1PA. As I've been away from the Windows platform for a few years, I'd rather someone from this Forum reply to the browser question. If I'm not mistaken, she will be attempting to access 1PA from a work PC on Monday.

I believe an upcoming update may allow 1PasswordAnywhere to work in Mobile Safari via the Dropbox website (but still not the Dropbox app since it does not load the entire data file). I don't have a time frame for a specific release, but we were just testing this internally moments ago.

This got a bit messy with all the merging I just did, but if there are any additional questions, I would be happy to help straighten everything out. I was just trying to keep the discussion of the same topic in one place. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

    Thanks for the update, robinzd!

I don't know when it will be available, but Roustem has confirmed that 1PasswordAnywhere should work in Mobile Safari in the next 1Password for Mac update. I personally love using the mobile apps. It is much nicer to use the native interface rather than a web interface, and the ability to edit and add items is very handy since they get synced back to my computers via Dropbox. However, if you are in no hurry, perhaps you would just want to wait for the update and try 1PasswordAnywhere in Mobile Safari.

I'm not trying to "lose a sale," but I just want to make sure you are happy with your purchase and don't regret it if using 1PasswordAnywhere in Mobile Safari will suffice for your needs. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

I'm very glad that 1PA worked on your office computer! Also, I saw where Khad responded to your Dropbox subfolder question.

Hopefully, after an iTunes download, a couple of quick iOS synchs and a very short setup process on each device, you'll be cooking with gas!
