Mac: Applications>1PasswordAgent?

How did 1PasswordAgent get on my IronKey under Applications?

What should the 1PasswordAgent do? It does not seem to do anything when I click on it.

Are you storing your Mac OS X Home folder on a flash drive?
  • I have copies of these on my IK.

    Library>Application Support>1Password

    Library>Preferences

    ws.agil.-PasswordThumbs.plist

    ws.agile.1Password.plist

It's getting the icon that I'm seeing from one of theme places?

1PasswordAgent is a background process that allows the application and data file to interact with the browser extensions, perform backups, download thumbnail previews, and even update the application itself.

It is copied from within the 1Password application bundle and run from ~/Library/Application Support/1Password/Agent/1PasswordAgent.app and if you copy that folder to a flash drive — or if it copies it for you; I'm not sure exactly how the IronKey works or how it interacts with Mac OS X — the 1PasswordAgent.app will also be copied.

It needs to run from your system drive, though, in order for 1Password to work in the aforementioned capacities including browser extensions.
  • Yes I do have ~/Library/Application Support/1Password/Agent/1PasswordAgent.app copied to the IronKey drive.

The only reason I have it copied was because I wanted to create a backup of 1password on my IronKey.

Guess I really only need to back up the files in the ~/Library/Application Support/1Password/Backups folder. Is that correct or should I be backing up something else?

Here is one for you or maybe IronKey.

I tried to remove the1PasswordAgent.app file from the IronKey to see if the icon would be removed from my IronKey Applications.

When I try to send the 1PasswordAgent.app to the trash I get a message saying...
The item “1PasswordAgent” can’t be moved to the Trash because it’s open.
It's open because my IronKey is open and if I close my IronKey I no longer have access to the 1PasswordAgent.app that is stored on the IronKey so I can't send it to the trash then either.

Unless I'm missing something it looks like I will never be able to remove the 1PasswordAgent.app file unless I "reformat secure volume" on my IronKey.

The only file you need to store on a USB flash drive (or Dropbox) is your data file. The default location for the file is:

    ~/Library/Application Support/1Password/1Password.agilekeychain

It sounds like 1PasswordAgent is being launched from your USB flash drive right now. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_sadsmile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-(' />

There is certainly no need to reformat anything, but it will require a bit of finessing. First, please make sure that you have in fact copied your 1Password Application Support folder and not moved it. If you have moved it, please please please copy it back. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' /> (A move will not likely work if 1PasswordAgent is running from the USB flash drive.)

Please follows these steps to clean up:

    1. Quit 1Password

    2. Delete ~/Library/LaunchAgents/ws.agile.1PasswordAgent

    3. Delete ~/Library/LaunchAgents/ws.agile.1PasswordUpdater

    4. Eject your USB flash drive

    5. Restart your Mac

    6. Open 1Password and your browser

    7. Verify that 1Password contains your data

    8. Verify that browser integration is working

Mount your USB flash drive and remove everything in the 1Password folder except for your data file. I would strongly recommend not running 1Password with an active data file on a USB flash drive. There is not really any added benefit of using an encrypted flash drive either since all your sensitive 1Password data is already encrypted and it is just one more point of failure (if it gets ejected or —worse — yanked out without being properly ejected). <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

If you would like to take advantage of 1PasswordAnywhere, please make sure that you always copy (not move) your 1Password.agilekeychain data file to the USB flash drive. Or, better yet, use Dropbox syncing. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I hope that helps. Please let me know how it turns out.

    Thanks!
