Feature Request: Find Duplicates

wintergreen
wintergreen Junior Member
<div class="IPBDescription">Duplicate Password Finder, Merge Duplicates</div>In my 1password database, there are a number of logins that are duplicated. Is there a way to automatically merge or delete them?

I think what must be happening is that when I enter a login in Chrome, the extension pops up and asks me if I want to save the password-- even if it has previously been saved.

So I guess that means I'm not using 1password the right way?

  • So everytime you use a different browser to view the same URL 1password stores the username/password info again?

I only use Safari so I have not run into this myself.

I mean every time I use the same browser (Chrome) to visit a site but don't use 1password to autofill the login (instead typing it in myself), it prompts me to save the password. Sometimes I don't know whether I've entered the password already, so I save it, hence the duplicates.

Why would you ever want to type out your username and password? MANUALLY?

1Password will prompt to save a password if the URL and password do not already match a Login stored in your data file. This requires autosave to be enabled (Preferences > Logins). At this time, there is not a way to merge or find duplicates. This is something we are considering in a future release.

I am finding the same issue as well. IT seems as though 1Pass is asking to save login even if it matches. Is there a tweak I can make to the setting to prevent this from occurring. There are times when I prefer to fill in the login manually (of accounts I know well, it seems faster) and this is when I get prompted even when it is already stored in 1Pass.

    Thanks,

    Lee

You can click "Never" in the autosave prompt to add the domain to the "Avoid Autosave on These Domains" list (Preferences > Logins). The stored information is likely different than what you are entering, though.

Try saving the login manually like this:

    1. Enter your username and password, but DO NOT submit the form.

    2. Click the 1Password button in your browser's toolbar, and choose Save Login.

    3. Set the Action field to Create New Login (or to Replace <login-name>, to update an existing Login item).

    4. Click the Save button.

I hope that helps. Please let me know.

    Thanks!

Please see this link for ways to determine Logins items that might be similar to, or match any that might have been compromised.

I just want to add my voice here as well.

You guys have been "considering" adding this feature for a loooooong time already. I think well over than a year. I remember writing you in days of 1Password 2 (or was it 1?...) and you were considering ever since.

How about just going forward and adding it already? For some sites, I have very big number of duplicate logins - same user names, same passwords, different entries in 1Password. It really is a pain to try and select which one to use sometimes. And even more so, since almost all logins turn to be duplicates of each other.

I have no idea how I turned out to have so many (other than that, being a long-time user, I inherit 1Password data from a long time before..)

And I would really love you to stop considering and just add some merge feature. Come on! Even Apple's AddressBook has it, so it can't be THAT complicated, right? <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Am I asking for too much? Or wasn't I patient enough?

    thanks.

I hear you loud and clear! Every application I use has some "obvious features" that are "so easy to add" that I cannot believe the developers haven't added them already. I want them all now damn it!! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

All I can say macdigger is we are all working our asses off around here doing the features that we believe are the most important while constantly reacting to the changing environment. Apple has been keeping us on our toes and some of our best laid plans have been upended. For example, who expected the iPad to be released so quickly and to be so amazing?

We have many exciting features and awesome improvements planned and duplicate detection and merging are just two of them. There is certainly no shortage of ideas! Our sole limitation is there are only 24 hours in a day and my wife and family want to see me, too <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

I wanted to add that the best solution for addressing the Gawker issue is to search 1Password looking for your compromised passwords. This is even better than the "duplicate detection" feature in my mind as it gets to the heart of the real issue: finding the accounts that have been compromised.

The duplicate detection feature is all about deleting/merging duplicate items, which is a wonderful feature and if we had it you would likely have less items to shuffle through while updating your passwords. However, even if this feature was available today, you would still want to use the Search feature to find your compromised accounts so you could update them.

Now if the Search feature was missing or it was unable to find passwords, I would be the first one looking for my pitch fork! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

    Thanks for the reply Dave.

Yeah, that's the answer I sort of expected <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> I guess that's a rather lower-priority feature and I can see you have much higher priority ones. It's just annoying as hell sometimes to try and guess which of several duplicate incorrect and a few duplicate correct ones is a correct one. Oh well, I'll chime in again a year may be <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

I hear you, just know that we face the same limitations as you do and we REALLY want to improve this as fast as humanly possible. We don't have the budget or enough resources to be able to handle everything at once. It would be nice if we don't have to sleep 8 hours a day, so that we could spend those hours developing those features for you.

Please do check back with us sooner than a year, even if you just want to chat with us or have other features to suggest to add on our already huge list of features to include. We'd love to hear more from you.

If it is any consolation, I am a perfectionist and every missing feature and piece of polish bugs the hell out of me too <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> Many of them keep me up at night thinking about how to code the perfect solution <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />

Technically I would like this request to apply to all versions of 1Password, but since I primarily use 1Password for OS X I am posting here. I am sure that there are many other people, like myself, who originally had 1Password import logins from Firefox (or some other browser) and then adapted to using 1Password to generate more diverse passwords for newly added sites. In my case, I know that there are lots of old websites in my database that use the same password. As I slowly find and replace the passwords in these logins, I find myself wishing that 1Password had a tool for identifying multiple logins that use the same password, so that I can more easily track down and update these logins. In the end, I don't want to have any logins that share the same password as any other website, but tracking these all down by hand is going to take a looooong time.

    -Chris
  • After adding a ton of stuff to 1Password I realized that despite knowing better, I've re-used some passwords here and there. Now that I have the app, it'd be useful to find all those accounts, so I can generate new passwords for each.

I can do that by just searching for passwords (which I've done), but that only works if I already know which passwords might have been reused. So, it'd be very neat if there was a feature that'd go through all the accounts/logins and find those that use identical passwords. It'd let you quickly determine if and where you've reused passwords.

The awesome solution would also compare usernames/email addresses to find those scary instances where you've used the exact same login for different things. The super-awesome solution could take upper-/lowercase variations and things like that into account, so you'd be able to "audit" your entire collection for overall security.

Note: I've only been playing around with the app for a few days, so I may have missed it if it's already there, but I don't think so <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Also, I'm running the current (Snow Leopard) version on Leopard. It looks a little wrong, but it works. I'd like to use the Leopard version of course, but the download link for the Leopard version goes to the same URL as the Snow Leopard version. You may want to look into that.

    Cheers

Duplicate detection has been requested/discussed in other topics, e.g.:

    Multiple duplicate logins

Some suggestions in the topic linked to in MartyS's reply might be helpful.

Hm. I would hope it doesn't look "a little wrong" since that is the Leopard version. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_worried.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':S' /> The Snow-Leopard-only version is still in beta and the text is only a placeholder until it comes out of beta. Sorry for the confusion.

The Snow-Leopard-only version will not run in Leopard at all, so you will know if you ever download it accidentally. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';-)' /> 1Password 3.5.9 — the version you are running — is the version you want. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

In any event, it sounds like you are already familiar with the information in our recent blog post about finding duplicate passwords more easily. A more general "duplicate finder" would be very useful as well. We will certainly take this under advisement.

In the mean time, please also consider sorting your passwords by password strength to quickly prioritize your password changes. You can either sort by password strength in the Traditional or Widescreen layout (View > Layout) or, as mentioned in the aforelinked blog post, create a Smart Folder with "Password Strength" as a search criteria.

I know it's not the same, but I hope that helps a bit.

Feature request for 1Password for OSX: a smart filter to find duplicate logins, search by username, url or password
  • jpgoldberg

Hi Tomtom. Welcome to the Forums!

You are absolutely correct that identifying duplicates is important for your security. There are a couple of things you can do. The simplest was posted by Mike a few weeks back to our blog

    http://blog.agile.ws/2011/04/tips-how-to-find-duplicate-passwords/

There's a more complicated way involving smart folders here

    http://blog.agile.ws/2011/01/easily-find-duplicate-passwords-in-your-logins/

Another approach is to switch to the Traditional or Widescreen layout (View > Layout in the menubar) and then sort the columns by password strength as you can see in this picture:

    http://cdn.agilebits.com/jg/sort-by-strength-20110527-131432.png

My biggest bit of advice is that if you have a lot of old passwords to go through, don't expect to take care of them all in one sitting. Visiting the sites and updating the passwords takes time.

    Cheers,

I discovered that I have very many duplicate entries that are identical. Is there a way I can get rid of these in a simple manner or is deleting one-by-one the only solution?
  • khad
    khad Social Choreographer
    Hey mac.gebruiker,

Thanks for asking about this. At this time, you will need to manually remove any duplicates since it can be hard for a computer to know which one is the "right" one without actually attempting to log in to every site.

That said, it would be great to have this feature (especially for items which are true duplicates where every aspect of them is identical). I merged your post with the feature request thread for this and added your vote. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

If we can be of further assistance, please let us know.

Plrease can we at least have the ability to delete passwords and logins via the chrome extension? It's very annoying to have to go through a long list of saved logins each time because i don't want to sift through the logins in the main app.
