1Password 2 license will not work with version 3

I bought 1Password during that nethertime between the announcement of 3 and its release, and was assured that my license was good for all future 3.x releases. It's... not very useful. It languishes on my hard drive. Skip to five weeks ago - I update to 3.4x, and am suddenly forced to re-evaluate 1Password. I am hooked within two weeks. Then 3.5, a "maintenance" release, comes out and suddenly I am running a demo version again and can't add any logins (since I have well more than 20). At some point, I also bought a copy of 1Password Pro for iGadget. Suddenly, this collection of not-exactly-cheap software became a lot less useful.

Right now, I am a laid off college student with no income and a lot of expenses. "Just buy another license" is not an option and will not be until and unless I find gainful employment in my field again. I am not holding my breath.

Have you uninstalled 1Password or reinstalled your OS at any time? Have you tried re-entering your license?

Reinstalled OSX maybe a year ago. Didn't cause trouble at the time.

1Password 3 was not available at that time. Reinstalling 1Password 2 with a version 2 license will still work quite well. Unfortunately, 1Password 3 requires a version 3 license.

When you purchase 1Password your license will never expire and you can use it on the then-current version of 1Password indefinitely. Do note, however, that system updates from Apple could cause certain aspects of 1Password to stop working in the future. For example, when Apple released Safari 3, 1Password required an upgrade to continue functioning.

Historically, we have been very generous with upgrades: Since we released 1Password, we have given away over 100 free updates and upgrades. We will continue this tradition of generosity and paid license holders will always get all "point updates" for free. (Going from version 3.5 to version 3.6 is called a “point update” and will be free if you have a 1Password 3 license.)

Major new releases will require a paid upgrade, but it will be a discounted upgrade for paid license holders. Those who purchase 1Password within 45 days of any major upgrade will be able to upgrade for free. (Going from any version of 1Password 3 to any version of 1Password 4 is called a major version upgrade and will be paid, except if you purchased your license within 45 days prior to the new version’s release.)

I hope that helps explain the situation a bit. Please let me know if you have additional questions or concerns.

Everything seems to be going well, save one problem: I uninstalled another browser plugin, and it took out my 1Password browser button as well. The 1p2 plugin will not install on a modern Safari. Is there a workaround, or shall I just do without until grad school?

I'm really sorry to hear you're experiencing problems with 1Password 2 and the toolbar icon in Safari 5. Unfortunately, 1Password 2 doesn't support Safari 5. Since 1Password 3 has now been released for over a year we've had to make the difficult decision to cease any further development of 1Password 2. Therefore, there won't be an update to add Safari 5 support.

There is a potential workaround that may enable 1Password 2 users to work with Safari 5; however, this does involve editing some files and is not officially supported or guaranteed to work. If you'd like to try it, though, please take a look at this thread.

    I hope that helps! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

If it works, why not release a 1kb update incrementing the "supported browser" string? I could probably release an unofficial patch based on an AppleScript, and I can't code anything but HTML.

OTOH, thank you for providing the link. I will upgrade to 1p3 when I am gainfully employed, and this should [s]tide me over[/s] keep me hopelessly dependent on 1Password until then.

Unfortunately, it's one fix here, another there, and pretty soon we are not left with as much time to devote to our current version. It was not a decision that was taken lightly, but we did have to stop before we ended up testing every version of every browser 1Password supports and adding support. It's not about making a single change but many (and supporting them as well). <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_sadsmile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-(' />

There are a lot of very compelling reasons to upgrade aside from Safari 5 (and Firefox 4, and Chrome) support. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />
