1Password and Dropbox issue, renamed a file, oops

mrsjb
edited December 2010 in Mac
hi. i have been using 1PW for about 1.5 yrs and i love it. Just downloaded Dropbox 4 days ago.

i changed the name of the file that is supposed to be 1Password.agilekeychain. so then i tried to recover and rename and now i cannot access 1password on my macbook pro or through DB. i also have 1pw on my iphone 3gs. i have not synced it since this issue started because i was worried.

Help.

Here is a description of the error message i get:

when i click any file in dropbox i get an error message that says: invalid Data File data file 'Users/wendy/Dropbox/1password(1).agilekeychain' is incorrect or damaged. please choose another file.

then when i click on the other file without the (1) it gives me the same message for the file saying data file '/Users/wendy/Dropbox/1Password.agilekeychain' is incorrect or damaged.

there are no other files to choose.

no matter how i try to open 1 Password i get that message and won't let me in, i can't open it

before i get the invalid data file message it brings me to the screen that says welcome to 1pw to start we will need to set up your data file and offers me choice of new data file or find existing.

neither lets me in

First question is dropbox finished syncing on all of your Macs, specifically the one you are trying to access 1p from. ?

Edit it should have a green check mark on it.

    Edit 2 : like this http://bit.ly/hTaJS1

Ok one makes things easier to solve. so thats a plus.

You mentioned renaming the keychain. Did you rename the keychain or are you assuming the 1 is something you did ? Most likely the 1 is a dropbox add on to prevent data problems sometimes I see it with folder names.

So you have a keychain called 1paswword.agilekeychain, and one called 1password (1).agilekeychain.

If you would launch 1P at the lock screen, from the menu bar select file, restore data file from backup.

You should see this box, or something similar.

Please verify that you have a backup thats near the time the problem occurred, make sure its the newest possible to minimize the potential for and data lose by restoring the keychain

    Dont click restore just yet.

Edit : (If you already clicked restore its no big loss) dont fret, 1P will restore the data file Dropbox will need to upload it again, wait for the green check mark to appear. Then follow the instruction below this post. In order to set 1P to using the keychain. From there launch 1P and you should be able to login to the app.

Open the Dropbox folder on your Mac,

Double click the 1password.agilekeychain from inside finder.

1P should ask if you want to switch to this keychain select yes

The other file the one with the (1) we are going to leave alone until we get you squared away.

Good morning I am just about to head out the door looks like we have similar schedules at the moment.

Any way the some what easy way would be to download dropbox on the iMac, set it up. Set up 1P Make a change and go to the other Mac and check to see if its there.

The green check signifies that its up to date on dropbox so it should be syncing.

The other way most likely easiest is to open 1P from the dropbox website using 1password anywhere and see if you notice the new change. This would mean it synced the data from your Mac to server and from there its really easy for Dropbox to sync it back to other Macs when you add them.

You said so far so good were you able to open 1P this time on your Mac ?

Ill try to check the thread when I get to the office if you have any time again this am if not Ill check in this pm, I suspect you will be up and running.

Edit look at the Dropbox menu bar item when its syncing its 2 blue arrows that look to be moving and when its all synced it it will have a green check mark Like this when synced.

    http://bit.ly/hM8J2j in the menubar

http://bit.ly/goLYqj on the keychain file in dropbox

It shouldn't take very long it may well be up to date already.

Try to open the file and make sure we have this portion solved, aka you can open it now err use 1P.

Gotta go Im late lol, talk to you in a bit. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
  • i was so happy to see your post.

yes, i was able to open 1pw from macbook.

    where does green check appear?

i clicked on dropbox option under sync section in 1pw and it says "dropbox is syncing all your 1pw data" but i can't tell if it's doing anything.

    have a good day.

i am going out to hear some music tonite, so i won't be home till maybe 10:30 or 11. so i can check in then. don't want to bring macbook to work.

i am out the door (otd) soon as well

    thanks again-later
  • yay i think....

    i m ssoooooooooooooo late lol

    Hi

    Wendy,

Since you seem to be back up and running, we need to take care of that other file in dropbox.

So lets make sure which file 1password is indeed using.

Open 1P
from the menu bar, select 1Password, preferences.
select the general tab, look at the section marked data
check the keychain name is it 1Password.agilekeychain or the 1Password(1).agilekeychain ? At this point it really doesnt matter yet this is just so we know which file we need to work with.

From there we need to move or rename the other file

open your dropbox folder
find the file the other one (the one 1password is not using) At this point we could just delete it but just incase I always hold onto copies like this for a few days to make sure I didnt loose anything.
hilight the file then drag the keychain file (the one 1Password is not using to your desktop. This will remove it from dropbox but keep a copy safe on your Mac incase there was something you needed to retrieve from it.

Now you have 1 file in Dropbox for 1Password (This is the file 1Password is using from the 1P preferences.

If its actually 1Password.agilekeychain then no other steps are necessary

If its the one name with a (1), we dont have to fix it as it will most likely be ok, but I would go ahead and fix it if it were me.

Right click on the file, select "get info" you can do this from inside your dropbox folder.
Expand the name and extension section if its not already.
remove the (1) so that its now called "1password.agilekeychain". Close the info window, You may see dropbox syncing the name change it may be so quick you don't see it.
Allow it to finish syncing, and look for that green checkmark on the icon for the 1Password keychain, or look for the Dropbox icon in your menubar and make sure it has the sync complete green check mark displayed.
double click on the keychain 1P will pop up asking if you want to switch to this keychain select yes. (This step is basically a shortcut for making 1P remember that this is the file it should be using)
Dropbox Menubar icon during a sync http://bit.ly/grvXD5

Dropbox Menubar icon when all synced http://bit.ly/gJE1iy

At this point everything should be back to normal for you.
From here you also should be able to sync your iphone to 1P, the good thing is if there is data not in the Mac version the Sync will add it so its relatively safe. Have you set up your phone from dropbox sync ? its really the only way to go. IMHO

    Good night Wendy,

I am crashing been feeling a little under the weather if you have any questions just ask, Ill check in tonight or in the morning. BTW big band or local type music just curious <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> Hope you had fun.

good morning. i hope you are feeling well and did not come down with a cold. i followed all your instructions and things seem to be good on macbook. 1pw opens when i turn on computer. is that what you do? i reinstalled dropbox on iphone but i have not used it yet. i wanted to check in with you first and make sure i'm ready. it was not the (1) file that dropbox was using, so i deleted that after i was sure.

i want to be very sure before i download it to my imac.

i have to run some errands today too <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' /> so i might check in erratically.

    thanks again, later.

    wendy

sort of local music. AMAZING guitar player, Julian Laage, this time playing with his 5 piece band. check out some of his stuff on you tube. he is unique and incredibly talented.

    Hi Wendy,

Thanks for asking, I just got over a sinus problem and looks like one of the guys at work brought his sons strep throat to the office, I don't think I have it, keeping fingers crossed.

Well the data file portion helped,

Sounds like you have 1P added to the Macbooks startup items you can leave it if you wish most folks myself included do not have it set to auto start to fix this.

Right click the 1P icon in the dock, select options, and deselect open at login. (remove check mark beside "open at login")

You really seem to be all set. So go for the iPhone portion, you will love it. I do. Here is one of the best help articles I have seen here at 1P http://help.agile.ws...th_dropbox.html

    On your iMac

Download and install Dropbox, let the sync finish You can do this while you are setting up the phone sync if you coose. This will give the data plenty of time to sync (just make sure it has completed before installing 1P on the iMac.

Download and install 1P, it will ask if you want to use an existing keychain and most likely it will find the one in your dropbox.

Now my fav part make a change for example add a secure note in 1P on the iMac, give it a few, go over to the macbook your note should be there waiting for you (the actual speed will depend on your internet connection)

I am installing a few VMs on my Macbook they are updating so I have a chance to check out Julian, thanks for the info. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
  • i am finally relaxed and done with 'errands', etc.

THANK YOU, things do seem to be all set with the macbook pro and iphone. yay. i think i will wait till tomorrow to do the imac piece. i don't like doing those 'new' things at night, just asking for trouble.

did you get a chance to check out Julian? What did you think?

    What are VMs?

do you really live with 9 siberian huskies? i LOVE dogs.

thank you again for making this so simple to fix.

i will update you tomorrow on my success <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> with the imac.

Are there other really cool programs you use that i should know about? do you use allbookmarks?

i hope you don't catch the strep, that's not fun. last year i started using something called Oreganol. it is actually oregano oil. this particular one is very pure and the most easily absorbed by body. it kills all kinds of bad bacteria. i take it 3-5 x a week, and have not been sick since. put just 2-3 drops in a little o.j. just thought i would share that with you.

VM = virtual machine, ie running windows inside my Mac ( I mainly tired it out to get a little knowledge on our Win version of 1P)

I have been trying it out, works much like the Mac version. I made the move from Win to Mac a few years ago and I have no real desire to live in that world again. But a little dabbeling never hurts. I still have a few friends who use Windows and I need to keep brushed up on it. Especially when they call and cannot get the wireless to connect, (Its a little hard to remember the steps to fix so I just use my VM so I can visually see it). Now if its not something that prevents them from connecting to the internet. I can log into there machine I use Logmein, for remote admin of there machines. It really is a great app.
Yes I do have 9,

Winter
Glacier
Nanook
Sapphire
Summer
Nomad
Alpine
Sleet
Summer
Here is a photo album link of the wife, 2 of my 3 sons, and some the dogs. http://bit.ly/f9Shpd , bit.ly/e7S25E (these 2 links are identical but are 2 different means of sharing photos via Dropbox)

If you view the gallery the 3 rd item tells my story of when I was recovering from surgery, in this text a pic is referenced and that is the 4th in the group. Sorry I spend more time here and at the Dropbox forums rather than keeping my website. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':P' />

Also in the Gallery if you look at the picture of me working at the computer desk, look very very very closely you can see 8 of the 9 in that picture. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

I had a few struggles with my first try at dropbox, now I would never live without it. So your welcome in the help department, Its really no problem.

No I dont use all bookmarks. I use 3 main apps

Xmarks for syncing bookmarks between browsers, I have it set for Safari, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, RockMelt and Flock (new) ALL common used bookmarks etc (I feel safe with xmarks now they have been purchased, at one time they were gonna go belly up I thought)
Historio.us for a file cabinet type of setup
MobileMe for iPhone syncing. I may move to the Xmarks mobile, I haven't tried the app yet, maybe tomorrow if I have time <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
I havent had a chance to look him (Julian) up this evening I have been moving from the Mobile Me calendar back to Google Calendar. I did add a qucik search link to my reminder bookmak section in Historio.us

One of the coolest things I use and found really by accident is a Safari Extension. Its called Ultimate Status Bar, I love it because I can hover my mouse over a link and it will tell me where the link actually goes to.

For example I hovered my mouse over the link to my gallery above and you can see by my screen shot, that it shows it really points to Dropbox.

Now Ill have to look up the Oil you mentioned. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Just an FYI: Since I switched to Chrome recently, I had been missing that extension. I did find an (almost) equivalent in Expand.

It does pretty much the same thing, except it shows a tooltip instead of showing it in the status-bar popup at the bottom of the page.

    Thanks,

I will now proceed to go get it <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />, hmm i wonder if it will work in rockmelt and the new flock since they are based upon chrome, i would guess yes. I'll try it out later on them gotta have something to do tomorrow evening sitting around the hotel room 300 or so miles from home.
