Dropbox sync must be set up on Mac or Windows

Hi folks,

Need some help syncing my 1password database to my iPad.

I have:

- iPhone 4 running iOS4.2

- iPad running iOS4.2

- 1Password Pro (on both devices)

- A Mac computer.

I do NOT have the 1Password application for mac.

I just recently acquired the iPad, and up until now, I have been using 1Password Pro exclusively on my iPhone. Periodically, I will make "backups" of my 1Password data file by doing Settings -> Database -> Backup & Restore, and then use Safari on my Mac to retrieve the data file. This much works well.

Enter iPad. Now, I would like to be able to move all my password data from my iPhone to my iPad. I don't care how I do it. Here is what I tried:

1. From iPad, Settings -> Data-> Backup & Restore, then use Safari on my Mac to restore the previously saved off (from my iPhone) data to the iPad. I do "choose file" (and choose a file called: 1Password0100-20101202.1ptbackup), then do "restore". My iPad asks "Do you want to replace all your data with this backup?" and I do so I hit "Restore". The app locks, so I enter my password to unlock it. Then it says "Upgrading database, please wait...". After a little while it says:

Failed to update the database

Error: Failed to insert or update the security level: 'SL3', disk I/O error

My only option is to hit "OK" at this point, and I'm back to square one.

2. I tried syncing through dropbox but that did not work. I saved the 1ptbackup file manually from my iphone to my mac as described above, then put this file in my Dropbox folder. Then I configured my iPad to sync via drop-box, but I'm getting "Cannot find 1Password data file in Dropbox. Please make sure you are using the latest version of 1Password on your Mac or Windows desktop".

So I'm stuck. Neither method I tried works.

Questions:

- Why is the dropbox error case telling me to make sure I'm using the latest version of software on my mac? I'm not using Mac software to do this, I'm just doing it manually via dropbox.

- Should either of the above two methods work, or am I doing something fundamentally wrong?

- What is the recommended way to keep two iOS devices (e.g. iPad and iPhone) in sync?

- Any other suggestions?

Also, on my iPhone, if I go to Sync -> Dropbox, it is "off". If I attempt to toggle it to "on", the slider moves for a second then automatically moves back. Very frustrating since it give no reason why it is doing this!!! Why is this happening?

Thanks

Chris

  • OK, I downloaded the trial 1Password application for Mac, and now I'm able to sync all 3 devices (iPhone, iPad, Mac) via Dropbox. It wasn't particularly clear to me that using the Mac application is a requirement to sync via dropbox. For example, this pages says nothing about the "for mac" application in the top section which describes dropbox:

    http://help.agile.ws/1Password_iPad/sync_multiple_devices.html

In any case, I may or may not (probably not) keep the "for mac" software - it is overkill for what I need. I'd like to be able to sync my iPad and iPhone to each other, is this possible to continue doing via dropbox, if I do not purchase 1Password for Mac?

Based on what I know now, it seems the only option may be the manual method of backup/restore, but as I mentioned in my previous post I am unsuccessful in doing that. Any ideas?

    Thanks,

    Chris

Welcome to the forums, Chris. Thanks for letting us know that everything is working well. Always good news! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

The top of the page to which you link says that the Dropbox setup is "a one-time setup process which must currently be done on a Mac or Windows machine." The Dropbox sync guide (linked in that same sentence) includes the desktop setup in step 1.

The good news is that 1Password for Mac or Windows is truly only needed for the "one-time setup process." (We wouldn't lie to you.) <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';-)' />

Once Dropbox is working on your devices, you can uninstall the Mac or Windows version if you desire. This will not affect device-to-device syncing. We think you will like 1Password for Mac enough to purchase a license (especially if you use it for the full trial period rather than just a day or two), but you are under no obligation. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_bigsmile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-D' />
  • Khad - let me apologize, you are completely correct. I totally missed that text. I'm sorry, it was very late and I was frustrated. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

Can you comment on why the manual save (from iPhone) + restore (to iPad) didn't work? Is that scenario supposed to work?

Thanks, I will try it out and consider it. Is there any discount available for the Mac application if I've already got 1Password Pro?

No worries at all. I have made far worse mistakes in the wee hours of the night. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';-)' />

It should work well, but I would recommend Dropbox syncing since it is fully automatic (once set up). We can explore it further if you like, but with Dropbox syncing your data is not only securely stored on both your iOS devices but also securely on Dropbox. Automatic off-site backup. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

You could lose both devices and your Mac but still not lose your data. It really is the ideal solution.

Shoot us an e-mail at support@agile.ws and we will be happy to provide some assistance in that regard. Please include a link to this thread, so we can "connect the dots."

    Cheers!
  • Thanks Khad. One other question about the Mac app - I'm getting the following message from 1Password for Mac:

    ----

    Your 1Password trial has expired!

You may continue using the FREE version of 1Password,

but you will need to limit your items to 20.

    ----

I'm not sure if it's expired due to number of days passed (I've only had it installed for a few days per the case history) or because I've got more than 20 items, or both. Can you comment, please?

If it is a 20 item limit, this might be OK for someone who demos the Mac application first, but I've been a user of 1Password Pro for some time and have hundreds of items in my 1Password file. Of course when I synced all 3 devices via Dropbox, my Mac now has all these items too. How do I work around this in order to be able to use the desktop app during the trial to determine if I'd like to purchase it?

Also, it's not clear to me what happens if I just keep on using it, after the expiration message I can click "not now" and the program appears to continue working - is it crippled somehow as a result of the "expiration"?

    Thanks

    Chris

    Good question, Chris.

The trial will expire 30 days from the date of your oldest item in your data file. This causes a few issues with imports/restores/syncs, so if it has not yet been 30 days for you, please contact us directly. We can assist you with this! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

Actually, I just sent you an e-mail which I hope resolves the issue for you. Please let me know.

    Cheers!
