Safari

Why isn't 1Password for Windows available on Safari. My only options are for IE, Firefox & Google Chrome?

Comments

  • I agree, this is weak. I normally use a Mac at home with Safari and I use Safari on my laptop PC. This needs to be addressed to add browsers of choice.

With IE, Firefox, and Chome, we cover 95% of all browser usage out there. Safari does not justify the development time/effort on Windows (yet)

Sad to say, it's not that simple. For every browser you might choose, we first have to create the extension that works with that browser. That's no small task, and we're a small team. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

That said, please note (in the issues and features post near the top of this forum) that Safari is the next browser listed for support.

I can agree with this, but assuming you already have a plugin for safari for Mac. If you can reuse at least parts of this implementation, it should be possible.

I agree with this for Windows users. For users, that use both, Mac and Windows, i would believe, that >90 % of this group uses Firefox or Safari on both, Mac and Windows.

With the above assumption, and with the view to the history of 1Password as a Software that was originally developed for Mac and therefore it is very likely, that the windows version is 1st used by users that know that excellent software from their Mac and use both systems, i cannot follow this point of view.

With this in mind, I would have expected that at least safari is supported before chrome, perhaps even before Internet Explorer.

Possible, indeed—just not practical, yet, for the reasons explained above.

We felt (and still feel) that 95% coverage justifies the initial selection of Internet Explorer and Firefox, and the feature boost provided by adaptation of the Chrome extension justifies that effort.

We understand your frustration, though. Everyone wants their favorite browsers to be supported.

Here are the numbers on Windows:

    Internet Explorer: 57%

    Firefox: 24%

    Chrome: 11%

    Safari: 5%

Considered the above, it makes sense Safari is not supported BEFORE Internet Explorer.

I'm just curious how much of these internet explorer users are 1P users. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' /> I would guess very, but very small percentil. I think when is user smart enough to get 1P, he isn't using IE unless he doesn't have to.. work, etc.

We know that users that are passionate about web browser "XYZ" will want 1Password supported in their browser before others, but as a small development house we only have so many pies that we can bake at once. We'll be trying to make the best decisions about "what's next" as we make our way along the path. It's good to know what you're interested in seeing... hopefully we can get to your "XYZ", although some browsers just don't have the impact of others — we don't want to get overtaxed and do a poor job either.

I have released a BETA version of our Safari extension for Windows. It is included with 1.0.9.BETA-236. Please take a look here: File > Preferences (Ctrl+P) > Browsers.
  • My 1Password keeps failing to work in Windows Safari again.
  • Hi, Bippie.

Can you give us a little more information about how it's failing?

What steps do you take to see the failure, and what do you see when it happens?
  • David,

When I went to Safari, the 1Password icon would show up in the toolbar, but it had a red check in it, and I couldn't log in. then today, there was NO icon available. so I checked my version of 1Password and there was a new update. I did the update, went to your extension page, downloaded it, and NOW IT WORKS! Thanks for the concern.

Yeah, that red "badge" (it's Mac lingo) meant that there was a problem—possibly a mismatch between the extension and 1Password itself—and the update has solved it.

Thanks for letting us know, Marc!
