Broken vault?

<div class="IPBDescription">Vault location changed to backup vault</div>HI,

I've been using Knox for some time now and was pleased to here Agile had purchased it as I also use 1Password and feel both products compliment each other.

Unfortunately I've had some small issues with Knox recently.

Firstly, I notice occasionally Knox has not loaded at login and is not present in the menu bar. It is configured to start at login in the preferences. Starting Knox manually works, and generally it is there on the next reboot, but at some random point in the future, when I want to use Knox again, it often hasn't loaded.

Secondly, I have 3 vaults, one of which appears to have broken somehow. The vault opens okay, and I never received any prompts about it being invalid, but I notice instead of saying 'Archives' the vault name is now 'Archives 2010-11-28 20.31'. This is the name of one of the vault's backups, and looking at the vault's properties I can see it now points to the backup vault.

I've tried creating a new vault named Archives and copying the data from the backup vault into it, but on a reboot the new 'Archives' vault once again points to the backup. Something strange seems to be going on? I also tried renaming the backup vault and putting into the proper location, but this doesn't seem to work either.

Could you please explain how backups are handled, as I assumed they would never appear in the list of vaults, and are simply backup copies.

    Welcome to the forums, mallchin!

Please try moving the Knox preference file (~/Library/Preferences/com.knoxformac.knox.plist) temporarily to your desktop and restart your Mac. You will need to drag and drop your vaults into the vault list in Knox preferences to have them managed by Knox again.

Also make sure you you are running the latest version of Knox (2.0.8 at the time of this writing) which you can download from our website.

Please let me know how it turns out.

    Hi Khad,

    Thank you for welcoming me.

    I don't have a ~/Library/Application Support/Preferences/com.knoxformac.knox.plist file.

'sudo locate -i com.knoxformac.knox.plist' also returns nothing.

I am running the latest version, 2.0.8, of Knox.

Could it be my settings are stored elsewhere as I've upgraded (over time) from older to newer versions?

I found it at ~/Library/Preferences/com.knoxformac.knox.plist. Moved it and rebooting now.

I moved the above file and rebooted but my vaults are still the same. I did not have to add them again, Knox already knew about them, but my other preferences had reset and I had to re-enter my registration code.

'Archives' vault still links to the backup and is named as such.

I'm sorry for the 'mis-direct' on the path to the Knox preferences... we didn't mean to lead you on a goose chase. By the fact that you had to reenter your Knox license shows me that you did find the right one.

It might be that for some reason you need to have Knox "forget" this vault:

    1. Make sure and manually dismount the vault itself (if it's mounted), and use the Finder to make a backup copy.

    2. Be certain that you know the vault's password, as this process will remove any saved password for the vault from the OS X keychain! Since this is an unexpected vault this step probably doesn't apply to you.

    3. Access the Knox Preferences, and click on the Vaults pane.

    4. Click on the vault to be removed -- the Archives XYZZY one in your case.

    5. Click the Move Selected to Trash button and read carefully what's going to happen to your vault.

    6. After you have removed it from Knox's listing, find the vault in your Trash and move it back to where you want it to live… if you want to keep a copy of that archive backup.

    7. You should now drag from the Finder the "real" Knox vault that you want to "manage" within Knox to the Vaults area of the preferences. A green plus-sign ("+") will appear and you can release the vault.

You *will* need to setup any desired backup location for the vault again.

    No problem at all.

I hadn't gotten around to trying the changes you suggested, however, it now seems my vault is showing okay after removing the plist file from the previous suggested steps.

I still think something is suspect as it has, in the past, shown the correct vault on the odd occasion, but then fallen back to showing the backup vault. As it is okay now I'll stick with it as it is and hope for the best <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Thanks for letting us know that worked for you, mallchin. That is always good news! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

Please do let us know if it ever "acts up" again.

    Merry Christmas to you, too!
