I have a Mac Book. The question I have is that I am going to take it to an Authorized Service Provider of Apple so they can upgrade my Hard drive from 120 GB to 500 GB. How save is all the info in my One Password account. Is there any stuff I need to take out so no one can get access to it. Thank you Jackie
Hi Jackie,

Your 1Password data is always stored in an encrypted form on your computer, so even if they have your keychain, they need to know your master password to decrypt it.

One thing that I do recommend is backing up your data and ASP sometime do make mistakes with the data transfer, so please make your own backups instead of relying on ASP to transfer the data for you.

The most important file that holds all the data for you is the keychain and it can be usually found in two locations, the first one is the default support folder which is located at:
<User's Home Folder>/Library/Application Support/1Password/1Password.agilekeychain
If you're using Dropbox, it is likely to be stored here:
<User's Home Folder>/Dropbox
1Password.agilekeychain is the data file that you need to backup and likely what you want to "take out" before handing it in to ASP.

I hope that helps, please let me know if you have more questions.

  • Thanks Mike for getting back to me so soon. I did what you said <User's Home Folder>/Library/Application Support/1Password/1Password.agilekeychain. When I double clicked the folder nothing happened which I quess is right.. So do I need to move any thing to my portable hard drive first. I know I have to back up everything first on my time machine before I take my Mac Book in. Wish I could replace the hard drive by myself but I am scared to open up the back of my laptop. This is my first computer. 120 GB is not much space so I know the 500 GB wil do. I really do enjoy having the One Password as it does make life easier with all the passwords.

You only need to move the 1Password.agilekeychain file to your portable hard drive. The rest you can get from our website, you can get a copy of 1Password at our web site at: http://agile.ws/downloads

Your license information can be found at your Customer Center or via our email to you when you purchased 1Password. If you don't have the email, you can request it to be resent here.

One more question Mike. After I move 1Password.agilekeychain file to my portable hard drive do I then deleate the file from my Mac Book?

If you want to, please make sure you have at least two copies of the same file before doing that.

In fact, you should also back up your Backups folder from same location of your keychain, if you want to have multiple copies of your keychains.
<User's Home Folder>/Library/Application Support/1Password/Backups
After moving it to your portable hard drive and your Time Machine finished backing up, just trash the keychain file, right (or command) click on the Trash icon and then press the command key to select "Secure Empty Trash".
